We pay $10 an hour, and that seems to be what we hear from all of our friends as well. The sitting services are a little more.
I was wondering what the going rate is for babysitters. I have a teenage girl who is coming to watch my toddler son for just a couple hours tomorrow afternoon and I'm not sure what I should pay. Thanks!

Our babysitter (who is 15) says she gets anywhere from $5-10/hour depending on the number of kids. We only have one, a 15 month old, and we paid about $7/hr. Plus since she's not driving yet we had to pick her up and take her home. Hope that helps!
I've been a sitter for about 8 years now and for a teenage girl, I would say around 7.50$/hr is appropriate. For a college kid you're looking at 10$/hr for one kid. And the minimum paid should be for four hours. That's just good etiquette and more for a college student than a teenager. There are websites out there if you google nanny etiquette you should get some hits. Also, the Association of Professional Nannies is a good resource too.
I believe the going rate is about $7-8 for a teenager but college kids and up is $10 an hr with a min of 4 hrs up to 2 kids and it's more than 2 kids it's $1 extra per child. I also think you should pay something not neccessarily the entire pay but at least half if you cancel since they have saved that spot for you.
Hope this helps.
I pay a minimum of $10/ hour. When we go out on weekends, I guarantee $40, even if we have to cancel at the last minute because these girls saved the date for me. This has happened a few times this summer when daughter ends up getting a sleepover at the last minute on the night we have a sitter booked.
If we are gone over 4 hrs, I add to the minimum. Most weekends we average $60 (cash) for our sitter. We have 1 12 yr old girl.
Right now we are kindof aging out of the need for a sitter but we like to have one when we are out late at night.

I have twin 1 yr olds; I pay $10 per hour minimum, except there is a 17 yr old down the street that I consider a "mother's helper," rather than a nanny, and I pay her $7.50. She asked for $5 per hour and I told her that was just not enough for twins. She does not have to drive because it's right down the street and I stay home when she is here and I am training her to take care of twins so she is happy to work for $7.50. If I have to stay home (I work while she is here), I don't think I will pay $10 unless they are soon to be able to handle taking care of the children while I'm away.
