I paid my baby-sitter $12-14 an hour this year, but she is in her 20s with a Master's Degree, and she was also responsible for potty-training and feeding my kids.
I am going to ask the teenager next door to watch my 4 year old for 3-4 hours and I have no idea how much to pay her. My daughter will be fed and bathed so all she will need to do is watch/play with her for the 1st 2 hours then put her to bed.
Thanks for replies. My coworker was telling me she pays a teenager 20 for a situation like mine! I thought it sounded way to low. She's 16, I guess I'll give her 10/ hr

The teenagers here charge $10/hour. Babysitters in their 20s usually charge $15/hour. And it doesn't matter what the babysitter has to do, it's the same rate. That means I pay the same whether I have a babysitter come over in the late morning, prepare lunch, and play with my kids for four hours as I do if the same babysitter comes over after dinner, puts my kids to bed 1/2 hour later and watches my TV for four hours while they're asleep.
15-20 per hour in our area. I am not sure about your area but you can check care.com to see the rates
My daughter is 17 and usually gets $8-$10. I think $15 is pretty high, when that is nearly double minimum wage in the Dallas area. I think you can establish the rules as well, that you expect them to interact and be engaged with your child when awake. They shouldn't be getting paid to park your child in front of a video and then text or talk on their phones. But don't count the hours after your daughter is in bed as worth any less. The idea is that they are putting in the same amount of time no matter what time of day. If they feel you are "shorting" them for those evening hours, they will likely make social plans instead of taking your job next time. It's the same principle that you are paid the same at your job, whether it is busy or slow that day. Also you are paying them to be there IF she wakes up or IF there is a problem, so those hours are just as worthwhile.
I've always paid $10 an hour... minimum of $40, I've mostly used sitters that can drive themselves, if I go over the hour, I sometimes give another $10 sometimes not, but it evens out in the end. If you use a sitter regularly (weekly/bi-weekly/monthly) then I think you can negotiate but if it is irregular then a flat rate is best. and the more kids the more money per hour they should get. I have three kids, and they are overall very easy to sit for, sometimes they need to be feed and I always offer to feed the sitter. and I don't expect them to clean (other than clear the table), baths are sometimes necessary but my kids can do it themselves.
Our daughter charged $8.00 - 1$0. per hour. each additional child $2.00 more per hour.
She was in demand because she had taken the Red Cross Classes.
She had excellent references by volunteering at the elementary school summer camps since 5th grade and also she took a bag of fun things to do with the children.
She said she actually played and did things with them. Apparently lots of the teen sitters would just sit and watch TV or text the entire time.
How old is the teenager? If she is a jr high girl in the 14-16 yr old range then probably $5 to $6 an hour is probably good. But if she is in highschool then you want to at least hit minimum wage. As they are able to get real jobs. If you want them to be available to you regularly then you want to pay them enough to make them want to be there for you.
In my area it seems to be $10-11 an hour. Another option is to check whether there is an Adventure Kids (or other playcar) near you. It's about $7.50 an hour as a member or $8.50 as a non-memeber. You can take a meal or have one prepared (appx $3.75) for them. Healthy meals during the week; pizza Fri or Sat. During the week, they're open until 10 and until midnights Fri/Sat. They can go to sleep if tired, too. The nice thing is that they are state licensed, cpr certified, and your child gets to play and have a great time with other kids in a safe environment. They're TX based with facilities around the metroplex, so you'd need to look up whether there's one near you. My daughter would prefer to do that than a traditional babysitter, and it's less expensive for me.
You can ask her how much she charges...
I think about $10 per hour is average. It's a lot of money, isn't it? kinda makes us not want to go out much, with $40-50 for the babysitter, and another $40-50 for a dinner out or tickets to a show...
It depends on your area and the age of the sitter. My daughter has never set a rate, however an average rate around here is $10/hour
My daughter is 17. She's been sitting since she was 14. Right now she has 4 regular families and she averages $12-$15/hour per family.
She is one of the sought after sitters because she does not sit on her rear with children. She is known for taking some activity (craft, game, interactive book) for the children to have fun with, during school she helps with homework, tutors, teaches Spanish, she changes diapers, feeds, clothes and gets them to bed, including scratching their backs, etc.
When we used a sitter, we guaranteed $40 for the night because the sitter saved the date for us then we added $10/hour. Our weekly date nights we $60-$80 CASH.
