House Siding

We are getting ready to reside our house and I was hoping to get some idea of what people like or don't like about the siding they chose. My husband wants horizontal vinyl siding, I would like to do something vertical. Thanks for any input.

What can I do next?

Do you live in an HOA? If so - then check what the rules are.

do you want your house to appear taller? then vertical.
if you want it to appear longer - horizontal.

Do you want Hardee Board or vinyl or wood siding??? Guess I would need more information in order to answer your question.

Weather and the elements make a difference as well...high winds and down drafts...can peel off siding from a home...I would think...not sure...I don't live in Tornado Alley.

The siding company that will be installing your siding will have the best knowledge....

I personally really dislike white siding. We have a dark clay color that is holding up well and goes nicely with the stone on the front of our home.
Vertical siding reminds me of what you might see on a beach house. I like it but would have to see what your house looks like to know if I would like it.

Many years ago when I was residing my house, I got quotes for vinyl and for hardiboard. At that time hardiboard wasn't as popular so the quote was only $500 more. I felt like it was worth it. They usually discontinue vinyl siding and make new styles, so if you chip the while mowing the lawn or melt it by putting the grill too close, you can't repair it with the same design. You also can't paint it if you want to change your house color.

The house we are living in right now has vinyl siding (horizontal). It is pretty non-descript, boring, and frankly kind of ugly. The house we are building, we went with James Hardie. We didn't like the color choices so we had it painted a custom color before installation. Love it! To add a more natural feel, though, we used real cedar boards as the trim around the windows and stained them a more vibrant color. Looks great and will be very low maintenance.

we received bids on both horizontal & vertical siding. The bids were a shock! Horizontal is much cheaper in cost, & with vertical....you have to account for height differentials. For example: the sheets come in 8' lengths....so you either have to seam 2 pieces together for the rest of the height....or you have to use horizontal under the eaves.

Sooo think about how tall each side of your house is....& consider how you'll need to plan the siding. For us, having to piece the verticality on the sides of the house.....boy, that knocked it out of the running. In the end, the horizontal bid was $5000 less!

Broke my heart, because currently the front of our home is vertical board & batten....& I love it!

edit: for mid MO, wood works well. Our paint job is at 22+ years & counting. Our residing bid was for hardiboard. :)

Vertical. Real wood board and batt. Don't do it. At least in our dry climate it needs to be repainted every couple of years. I wish I'd used fiber cement. It would have saved me $$$.
