How about a reloadable Visa Gift Card. That way when his birthday and Christmas comes around and he can not get home, you and other family members can send him money.
I need some suggestions for a high school graduation gift for a young man (nephew)graduating from high school in California and going to college in Massachusets

As others have said, money is always good. If you don't feel comfortable giving cash, gift cards are always nice too. I just gave a Barnes and Noble gift card to my cousin for graduation!
A card wth a heart felt "what he means to you and how proud you are of his success" and then money, money, money!
The best gift I can think of is time with you. If you are close I suggest a day out for a movie, baseball, soccer or something else he is really in to. He will remember the memories when he is a long way from home. Plus he probably will need something to keep him warm as it gets mighty cold in winter in MA.
Congratulations!
Sorry if this a duplicate. Since it gets icy cold I suggest nice leather gloves, a scarf and/or cap. Mary Ann
As crass and impersonal it is, money is what everyone is hoping for.

C.,
Gifts are hard alone, especially for a boy going off to college. You may want to consider looking into his college and finding out the mascot of the school or information on giving him a gift to the school book store, or maybe alma-madar gifts. Good luck and congrats! You must be so proud!

My own California-grown kids went to college in D.C. and the biggest shock to them is when winter hit! They wore 100% wool sweaters for the first time and needed non-skid boots for the icy pavement. So, though it doesn't seem such a sentimental gift--a gift certificate to J.Crew or L.L. Bean would be good--and tell him you want a picture of him on campus in a snowstorm wearing what he bought with your gift! D.
