Hi
I want to know if any pediatric doc will give any med to make kid sleep... As I got some serious problem... My son hates anyone messing or touching with his head... Like hair cutting or cleaning ear or anything... He got phobia I think. He hates touching his head.. The last time I cut his hair is when he fell asleep and that tooo 3 months back, Now he is not even allowing to touch his hair when he is asleep... Even bribing with gifts and everything didnot work... Even his fav foods or electronics or anything nothing worked... Please help. Does doc give any med like that, as he has never even allowed doc to touch himeven for small cold, we have to take him for full checkup... But it will become problem... Is there a doc who can handle this difficult kid.. In or Denton ... As I think the only way to check or touch his head is when is unconscious, or sleeping... Sorry if I sound stuppidity, but this is my biggest problem, he makes huge fuss or cry or jump or do anything... Desperate help... Lease let me know...

What can I do next?

He may have a sensory processing disorder, or he might just be a touchy toddler. Really, he needs to be evaluated by a proper doctor.

This sounds like a sensory disorder. You need to talk with your pediatrician about it and then get him into a behavioral specialist to see if he is "on the spectrum" and then get him the help he needs to work through this.

You don't sound stupid. Please don't think that way. You are wondering what is going on with your son.

Good luck!

Are there any other problems that he has other then this sensory issue with his head? Are there any sounds or touches or textures? I would talk with your pediatrician about this and let them know your concerns about this. The issue may dig a little deeper than what the eye may see.

Have you talked to your pediatrician about this? You should. You need to get the ped to help you by sending him to a child psychologist and an occupational therapist. This aversion of his is something he HAS to get over.

Please do this for both of your sakes.

I don't think your kid needs a sleeping pill , and I am sure your kid's pediatrician will not be willing to prescribe one either. You need to find what is going on with your child, and ask for help to the pediatrician. There are kids who are sensitive to many things around them and others who need a more profound evaluation. Please do not label him/her as a difficult child; he needs help, love and patience particularly from you. So talk to your kid's pediatrician, and start from there.

Have you read about Sensory Processing Disorder? If not you should read about it. Our son has it and over time he has outgrown some of the things that he could not stand. How old is your son?

Yes get him evaluated for sensory issues but that could take years to desensitize him. I don't see anything wrong with restraining him. We restrain kids to give them meds, give vaccines etc. Have him sit in your lap at the salon. Give him a big hug holding his arms and have the stylist give him a buzz cut. Keeping telling him it's ok he just needs a haircut. You can't have really long, dirty snarly hair on him. What if he gets lice?

1) No. They won't. Not unless there is extreme medical need (and as the mum of an insomniac kid up for 30+ hours a stretch, dying for sleep, but there are no sleep meds safe for children), believe me... His docs & I have both cried over this.

There are anesthesia drugs. What dentists use. That's not what you need.

2) You need an early intervention eval.

Extreme sensory issues
- Have solutions, or at least coping mechanisms
- Are usually indicative of more serious neurological issues

Did you ever wonder how a veterinary doctor works on a cat?
They wrap them up in a sheet and leave the part that needs to be worked on uncovered.
Seems to me this might work with a toddler.
No doctor is going to give you sleep meds for him so your child can get a haircut.
Your only other choice is to let his hair grow long and then maybe braid it, but he probably won't let you do that either so maybe he'd have dread locks?
Can you get him to comb/brush your hair?
My son was very good at it from 2 yrs old.
My hair is pretty long and he loved getting it all brushed out.
He liked it so much that he didn't like it if I took brushing time away.
So - he had to let me work on his hair if he wanted to be allowed to brush out my hair.
Sometimes you have to put your foot down and say "this is not negotiable. you WILL have your hair cut whether you like it or not".
And then follow through by restraining him - gently carefully - to get it done.
If he doesn't want that to happen again, then he'd better learn to cooperate.

Please don't wrap your child up to cut his hair. Ask your pediatrician about sensory issues. Does he have a problem with tags in clothes, scratchy seams, sock seams, stiff materials, etc.? If yes, then he may have a sensory challenge and that needs to be dealt with. It would mean he is not being difficult on purpose, but that his body/nerves are sending messages that the touch is TOO much to handle.

Try to give your son some control at the doc - talk to the doc about it. Perhaps your son can "help" the doctor examine him - that way it isn't so scary. Have the doctor explain what is going on. Maybe watch some "visit the doctor for a checkup" videos on youtube.
