Help with Weaning My 17Mth Old

I have been blessed to be able to nurse my daughter for 17mths now. However, another bout with mastitis has brought on the need to wean her. I have slowly decreased the number of times she has nursed, but find one breast(the same one affected by the mastitis) is hard and painful. I have followed my doctors recommendations from the breast care specialist by using pressure and ice to help dry things up. Not the most pleasant thing to go through. Just not sure how long that will take. Does anyone have suggestions on how to dry things up or make the transition easier and more pain free?

What can I do next?

Just a warning on cabbage leaves, if you are allergic to sulphates, you can't use them. My daughter cut cold turkey and the only thing that helped was a super-tight sports bra. ALTHOUGH-- I would check with your lactation consultant b/c of your mastitis (ouch, by the way) I don't know that that is a good choice for you. There are also herbs that help dry you up as well-- sage being one of them..... Good luck and I am so glad you were able to nurse for so long!

To use dried sage (Salvia officinalis) for reducing milk supply, take 1/4 teaspoon of sage 3x per day for 1-3 days. You can mix the sage in vegetable juice (for example, V-8), but it won't mix well into other juices. You can also mix it into other foods. If you don't like the taste of sage, try putting it into a tiny piece of sandwich and swallowing it whole - peanut butter or something else a bit sticky seems to work best for holding the sage in place. Tear off the corner of the sandwich containing the sage (it should be a very small section) and swallow it without chewing (that's why you need a very small section).

To use sage tea for decreasing milk supply, infuse 1 tablespoon of dried sage in 1 cup of boiling water (or 20g dried sage in 50 ml boiling water). Steep for 5-15 minutes. Drink 1 cup, 2 - 6 times per day.

You can use a tincture of sage instead: 30-60 drops of tincture, 3-6 times a day.

I massaged in warm showers and also put cabbage leaves in my bra (old wives tale I guess) but that relieved some pain during the day.

I had a similar issue. I had 2 bouts with mastits and breast fed for 11 months.

Go to an MD. This is an infection that can get out of control. Antibiotics helped clear it up. Introduce your little one to whole chocolate milk and let your breasts rest. My daughter is now 4 and very healthy and happy. I hope this helps.
