HELP With Son's Nosebleeds

My 9 yr. old son is having 2-3 nosebleeds a week, usually at night while sleeping. But this has also happened at soccer practice, today at the bookstore, last night at 3am. We pinch the nose, apply an ice pack to the back of neck which slows the blood flow quickly. What is normal here in Phoenix due to the dry environment? What is normal for boys? My brothers had lots of nosebleeds, but that was S. CA. Thank you in advance for your response and what works for your family.

What can I do next?

I used to have bad nosebleeds myself. I used a humidifier - but if you don't use distilled water it left a fine "dust" around the house. So, instead, I used the saline spray and the vaseline on a Q-Tip in the nose. It felt wierd, but it really helped.

My boys have had trouble with nosebleeds, too, like their father. Some people have fragile capillaries very near the suface inside the nose. Our dry climate makes that surface easier to break. Try a little vaseline gently applied to the inner surfaces of the nose. It should help. It's what the football coaches use for my 16 year old, to prevent his nosebleeds.
Hope that helps.

Yes it is an issue here in AZ. We have a humidifier in our bedroom and the hallway which is in the middle of our two children's bedrooms to add moisture in the air.

My dr always says to put a little vasiline on a qtip and insert it in the nose. Move it around until all sides are touched. I had to do this for myself as well. It does work.

Hi Jennifer,
I come from a family who all had trouble with nosebleeds including myself. I don't have them anymore, but it seems my son inherited that from me because it does run in my family. We bought a home humidfier for our house to keep the humidity up in house and that has helped tremendously, although my son doesn't live with us anymore (23). He still has problems with bloody noses especially since he doesn't have one in his new house yet. We used to apply pressure (pinched it or put a clothes pin on it) on the nose and keep an icepack on that area just above where we pinched it and also on the back of the neck as well. Perhaps he will outgrow it as we all did; you can also buy that saline solution which also adds moisture for the nostrils as well. My nosebleeds used to last for a good 10-20 minutes over the sink and which added to my anemia problems when I was young, but I don't have them anymore. I am waiting to see if my son will outgrow them as well. You can always check with your doctor or also check some of the health food stores for herbal remedies.

We used to have that problem with one of our children. The pediatrician suggested that we needed to use saline spray (a few squirts each night) in his nose on a daily basis. This really helped! We haven't had any problems since then. Good luck. We just bought a generic nasal saline spray (not a decongestant one).

have him apply aquafor up his nose at least nightly and the nose bleeds should stop. once they stop you can switch to vaseline if you like.

My husband had a big problem with noose bleeds. He went to a nose specialist and had his nose cauterized. It was really quick about 10 min and no pain. He has not had another nose bleed.

Get a humidifier -- It will help tremendously! My husband and both of my sons got nosebleeds when we first moved here. We bought a large humidifier that would cover the entire house. We used it for about a year and have never had any problems since. Good luck!
