Hair Problems

This is probably going to sound really silly, but I am hoping someone may have a good suggestion. My 5 month old loves to pull my hair. I know this is normal, but I can't pick her up with out her pulling my hair so hard my neck snaps backward. There isn't enough Tylenol in the world to keep up with the pain. I have tried pulling in back into a ponytail and she just rips it out of the ponytail. I am at the point that I am actually considering shaving my head. (For me this is extreme as I tend to be pretty vain) Does anyone have any suggestions for childproofing my hair besides taking a Lady Bic to it?

What can I do next?

I had long hair also and my two month old would grab it also. I had my hair cut short not saying that you should but I didnt like her pulling my hair because the hair would get in her hands and you know the hands go straight to the mouth.. You can try putting in up high on top of the head.

I have tried it all! Buns, ponytails, twists, you name it, I've tried it. Nothing keeps my little ones from pulling it. If your daughter is like mine (also the same age), there isn't much you will be able to do. I've also considered shaving my head but my husband won't let me!!!

How about a hat? Why not try a ball cap during the day, with your hair in a pony tail underneath it? Seems better than shaving your head?

You can also try an early discipline technique. When your daughter pulls your hair, put her down and leave her for 1 minute. This is considered a mini time-out and is appropriate for babies under 1 year. They also recommend this for nursing moms who are bitten by their babies who have new teeth. If you do this every time she pulls your hair, you are sending a consistent message that this not acceptable. Be sure to put her down somewhere she'll be safe, like a pack and play. Not on the bed where she can roll off!

Good luck,
K.

I hate to admit this but my son who is now 4 &1/2 still has this bizarre obsession with my hair and now that he is older its even harder to get him to stop. At first I felt it was a form of affection and felt it was a mother son bonding thing, despite all the headaches/ dizziness I was feeling. Now I wish I had stopped this when it started. So take it from me do whatever you can to get her to stop now!!!!

my daughter did and does the same, she is 8 mos now and is losing interest but still gets me sometimes. If your hair is long enough you can try a bun. I have found that a scruchy works pretty good to hold it. If it is really heavy put it in a ponytail with small holder first, then twist it up. It is the only way to keep that fun dangly stuff out of her eyesight.
good luck!

I put my hair in a bun. I know not the cutest thing in the world....but it worked. I also wore a headband. I would stay away from scrunchies, since they are big enough for the baby to see, and get her hands on. Good luck!

My daughter put her hair in bun.

Olivia Os idea of covering your hair is a good idea. A lot of stores sell cute bandanas.

My daughter had a problem with her baby grabbing her glasses, and the pediatricians suggestion was to stop the baby, then put her down and ignore her. Actually turn your back and dont look at her. The doc said that works way better than telling them No at that age. It has something to do with infant behavior and their need to stay connected with you.

Good Luck.

I don't know what is up with people suggesting you pull your infants hair back! Do NOT do that - whatever you do. I'm sure you aren't taking that advice, but I felt like I should say something. All you do when you bite back, pull hair back, etc. is teach your child that you can hurt them.

We taught our son the word "gentle" when he was about 3 1/2 months. We would take his hand and rub it gently through our hair, on the dog, on faces, etc and say "gentle" each time. It took about a week, but he doesn't even try to pull hair anymore. If ever he starts to do it, we just say "gentle" and he stops. I hope this helps...I passed this advice along to my DH's co-worker and it has worked for them, too.

I used those claw clips and wore mine up in a twist for the time of hair pulling. It may not have been the prettiest hair style, but it kept baby fingers from yanking it out. :)
