Have you heard of the book published by Klutz called Braids and Bows? Klutz books are in most bookstores and toy stores.
Hi Moms,
I was wondering if you could tell me your favorite easy and cute hairstyles you do on your daughters with long, straight hair! I need some new ideas! Thanks!
(maybe just describe how to do them to me please so I can try them out!! thanks so much!) Oh, also; I have a 2 1/2 yr. old with very fine hair. Any ideas for little girls?

I just found this blog. You might get some cute ideas from it.

We do a lot of pigtails--either with all the hair up, or just pigtails on the top with the rest down. Braids are also fun; my daughter liked the laura Ingles look with one braid on each side. If you chose to leave your daughter's hair down, you can do a side part and use a barrett.
My daughter's hair is very long, so we always pull it back in some fashion. Ponytails are the easiest... centered on the back of her head or low at the nape of her neck. Sometimes we will braid the ponytail. We also do a lot of pigtails... either higher up on her head or low behind her ears. Again, we will often braid the pigtails (which is my favorite). We will also sometimes leave the back long, but pull the front of her face, securing the hair with either a ponytail holder or a barrette at the top, back of her head. Hair clips on both sides work OK, but with fine hair tend to slip out. Sometimes I will also part my daughters hair in the middle, then take the front part of her hair and twist it, I then use those claw-like pinch clips (about 3 on each side) to hold the twist in place. Hope this helps!
Hello!
I am a hairsylist of 6 years! kids hair is so much fun to work on, especially little girls.
pictail braids are always a huge hit! You can spice it up with taking a think tail comb and doing a zig zag part too! If you don't have that kind of a comb a pencil will do if u don't press it against the scalp. You can use colorful elastics too! Or ones with beads!
French braids are great. Tucked (classic) in or popped out(inside out). these take practice, but with patience you can do it!! Hairspray &/or gel works great to hold down the fly aways. You can even run some gel through the dry hair before begginning. you can get picture instructions by googling french braids! http://www.ehow.com/video_17115_french-braid-hair.html
Pictail Buns are cute too. You can also divide these with a zig zag part. You can spray glitter gel on the buns for fun!! the spray usually smells good too! do these about mid level closer to the back side of the ear.
Little girls love to have there long hair curled too. use a 1/2" iron or smaller for long hair. This will allow curls to last longer! Section out the hair starting from bottom & letting down more hair section by section. You want about 1/2 inch sections at one time. Spray lightly with hairspray and than wrap around curling iron! And so on and so fourth!
fish tail braids are fun too & not too hard!

I hope these ideas are a good start for you!!! Good luck!
I had hair like that when I was younger and I loved French braids. Except that it hurt my head like the Dickens! I'd cry every time my mom did it, so much that she would have to keep asking me if I wanted her to finish. She and I have very sensitive scalps!
I don't know if that's in style now, though.
I always wanted Laura Ingalls braids when I was little, but they weren't in style. But they are now! Sorry if you already know this. Part the hair down the middle on the back of her head. Use a clip of some kind to hold half of her hair while you braid the other half. Finish with rubber bands, and for nicer occasions, with little ribbons.
Heck, there's a Momma Source picture I'm looking at with a little girl with the same hair style!
Another fun one is to take the hair at her temples and pull it back, securing with a barrette at the back of her head. For a variation, you can braid the hair from her temples before you pull it back.
I found this online:

You can always google "little girl hairstyles" and see what comes up!

Hi S.-
I have found a fun blog that has tons of ideas with instructions. shedoeshair.blogspot.com
enjoy!

My seven year old has very fine straight hair.
When she was younger I would part the top on the side and pull it over to the side and put one long braid down one side.
Or I would braid in pigtails.
Or I would put in headbands, she just now go to where she doesn't like headbands anymore.
Now I got it cut and it is tapered on the side, cute tapered bangs and I keep it at shoulder length. It is truly a lot nicer and cuter with straight fine hair maybe to find a cute cut where it still has length but has something else to it.
I had them go from her jawline down to her shoulder to an angle and straight in the back. It is so much cleaner looking and healthier.
Also with little girls, regularly getting their hair trimmed at least a few inches will help add health and thicken their hair up a lot sooner.
I have really thick hair (not fun at all seriously it is too thick) and her dad has thick hair.
Now at 7 she is just now getting some more volume to her hair but I have kept it trimmed and clean cuts every six months.
I also started using bigger kids shampoo and that adds a lot more body too then the baby shampoos!
Good luck.
The pony flip is my fav is to make a pony tail at the nape of the neck, above the holder I divide all the hair in 2 and then flip the ponytail through the split, pulling it out the bottom.
Or you can make the ponytail up higher, split the hair, and flip the tail up and over.
At the Renessaince Fairs there are usually braiders that weave the hair into all sorts of intricate styles... looks cool.
A website that I LOVE is www.piggiesnponies.blogspot.com. She has some really out-there styles, and some cute and simple ideas for all hair-types.
Thanks for asking this question. I myself have been wondering this same thing. I am tired of the side pony with a big hairbow/clip. My daughters wont keep headbands in or just clips so we are always in a pony tail....which gets boring. And I am tired of their hair in their faces. I too will check out these websites. Thanks again.
I always used braids for my Goddaughter. She would sit still for me. I'd get her hair wet and then section it off and put ponytails in her hair. then section that and make three seperate braids and it's just a simple braid, but if your leave overnight their hair is slightly wavey the next day. I love braiding. Of course, her hair was thick and very straight. She was very good about sitting still.
When I was younger I liked twisting the front part of each side to pull back into a half pony-tail. I'm sorry, that's not very clear. You just have to practice. One thing you could do is go to the library. There are several books on braiding and other hairstyles. Good luck!!!
There's a great blog that I go to for little girl hairstyles. It's a mom who does her girls' hair practically every day, and they are such cute hairstyles! One of her daughters is young, like 4 or 5(?) and one is older, so she has styles that work for older and younger girls. Some work better for hair that can hold curl, but most would work for straight and/or fine hair as well. Here's the url:
pig tails are fun i also like to feather her hair or pin it
I love rag rollers... they make perfect ringlets. Use strips of cotten fabric (old sheets work great) 1 inch wide by 1 1/2 feet long. I part my daughters damp hair into 3 seperate parts and then take each strip and have her hold it on her head. I then wrap her hair around the strip with one hand as I hold it taught with the other hand. When the hair is totally wrapped around the strip, wrap the strip in the same direction back up the hair to the scalp where I tie the two ends together. Just leave in overnight and when the "rag rollers" come out, it looks darling.
We are also big braiders, not only for the cute look of the braids, but also for the fun wavy hair the next day. We do all kinds of braids, I love the french braid across the top of her head with the back still down straight. (a Jessica Simpson hair style). We often do three hight ponys braided. Way cute. A headband with two low regular braids is darling. So much to do with cute little girls. :) Let me know if you'd like some pictures of how these all turn out, it is so fun.
My daughter also has long straight hair... it looks super cute when she wears it in what we call a "twisty ponytail". Split hair into 2 sections and just twist each section on its own going in the same direction, then twist the 2 sections together and secure with a ponytail holder at the bottom. She always gets compliments on this easy style and when she takes it out, her hair is wavy. I've also done this doing 2 (or more) twisty ponytails all over for a more fun look and when I have time.
upside down ponytail...put in the ponytail and then split it in half next to the scalp before the ponytail holder and then flip the pony through the split and tighten it. You can do this with little tiny ponies at the top of the head because they lay down flat so for my 2.5 year old with super fine hair we do this with a small not even half pony on top of her haid and she looks adorable and her hair is done and we are both happy. lol. You can do two on top in the small ones or one, or a large one. with super long hair you can do them as pigtails and then braid it down from there it is a funky fun way to start the braid.
Go to the website www.shedoeshair.com There are some great ideas. From her site, she has links to other sites for doing girls hair. Good luck!
I used to curl her long straight hair on rags. You know just strips of an old clean sheet. Curl it up and tie it in a knot. She could even sleep on them. We did not do it every night just from time to time for a change. It always made her hair full and wavy. Do you know how to do a french braide? Sometimes, we would start at the back of her neck and braid it toward the front of her forehead and tuck the end under. You could not really tell where the braid started or ended it was pretty too. Of course after they were 12 they didn't let me do anything any more. They would say No mom you make me look like a little girl. hahaha they were right. So, enjoy doing their hair while they will still let you. K.
