One of my girls got pink gum in our new white carpet!!! What can I use to get it out??? Being in an apartment and newly built ones at that, and the only ones that have lived here I'm doing everything I can to keep it looking new. I run my carpet cleaner almost everyday for the small stuff, but I'm scared that with hot water its only going to make the gum spread. Any advice is GREATLY appreciated!!!!
Thank you for ALL of the advice, the ice worked!!!!!! And with no stain left behind, THANK GOODNESS!!! I really wasnt wanting to call in Stanley Steemer when its an apartment we will be moving out of in a cpl months and they will come in behind us and steam clean anyway!(LOL) Also just in case anyone else runs into this I was also told a another woman a cpl buildings down that hairspray works well too, spray it on the gum and it rubs right out! Ladies THANK YOU all again!!!

Try putting ice on it so it will harden, then you should just be able to pick it off. Another idea is to put peanut butter on it, although you may not want to do that on white carpet! The oils in the p.b. help to loosen the stickiness of the gum. I would try ice first, though! Good Luck!

I would try peanut butter since it gets gum out of hair. Okay, now to get the peanut butter out of the carpet- try using the woolite oxy (blue spray bottle). That works wonders for us! Good luck!

Put ice in a baggie, then lay it on top of the gum and let the gum freeze. Ever so carefully, take a razor blade and skim under the frozen gum to take off the top layer (that is assumming it's not in a ball).
If it's in a ball, and wadded to the bottom, I think there are several cleaners on the marker (goo-gone comes to mind) but you'd have to test it somewhere to see if leaves a stain.
If it helps any, when I had money (i.e. before kids) we had a house cleaner that spilled bleach spots on our new carpet. I called a professional, and he fixed the spots by cutting them out ever so carefully (from the size of a pencil eraser to a quarter), then took the same size from some remnants we had of that carpet. He said you can also take it from closet areas. It was quite reasonable (about $75) and you would have never known there was a problem. He used everything from a glue gun to heat gun, and it was perfect.
To find someone like this, go to the yellow pages and look up carpet repair.
(I'd share his business, but that's when we lived in FL).

The very best product in the world for gum issues is something I have used for years called Sol-U-Mel from a company called Melaleuca. Let me know if you want to know how to get some. I would be glad to get it to you to try as well! It will get the gum out, stain out, and NOT hurt the carpet. Plus it is completely safe!!

Dr. Charles Roberts is a pediatric dentist here in Mooresville in the business park at exit 36. My 3 kids have gone to him since he opened more than 7 years ago. They all love him. His wife has the ajoining dentist office next door for adults. I've not been to her but her staff now cleans my 2 older girls, 16 and 18, since they are now grown and Dr. Roberts just check them. Hope this helps. Tell them Lorrette sent you!

Hey.. It is not good to run your scrubber that much on the carpets...but try a waarm iron.. Place paper towels down 2 and use the iron to warm it up... The gum should start sticking to the paper towels or be gooie enough to pick out.. Just watch u dont burn the carpet..

I was going to suggest the same thing as Sara. Ice is the only sure-fire thing I know of that will allow you to just "pick" the gum out. There are plenty of commercial cleaners on the market, but many of them have an oil base which will leave a stain. If the gum comes out but leave a small pink tint, you can always try diluted bleach on that. Test it first on a really small area to ensure it won't damage the carpet! (or you can cheat and dye that space on the carpet.

I'm sure you've gotten some responses with other good ideas, but, just about anything oil based will dissolve gum. The BEST product I've ever found, tho, is De-solv-it. Wal-Mart used to carry it, but sometimes don't now. It takes off crayon marks, candle wax, gum, adhesives ('sticker tracks', labels, etc.) The next best thing (and actually works a little better on some things) is Goo-Gone.

you could try freezing it with ice, and then chipping it out. it may leave a pink stain in the carpet that you can then address that with your shampooer. also, places like stanly steamer can remove anything.

You may want to try this as a last effort. First take an ice cube and freeze the gum until it is hard. Then you can pull if from the carpet without it sticking. I know on clothes, you can use peanut butter. On laundry you saturate the item with the peanut butter and work it into the gum and then it will come right off. The peanut butter stain on the carpet would be another question. If it is regular carpet and not Berbur (spelling may be wrong). I repaired a neighbors carpet that was burned in several places by a cigarette, by cutting the carpet down to the pad (in that tiny spot) and then I pulled several pieces of the carpet threads from various spots in the room (you couldn't even tell) and hotglued the carpet (wad) on top of the spot. It looked so good she didn't even have to replace her carpet when she sold the place. she was thrilled. Remember, this is to try, if all else fails.

Here are a couple of things you can try...
Try putting ice on the gum. The ice will make the gum hard and you can scrape it off.
You can also try peanut butter. The oil in the peanut butter will break down the gum so you can wipe it out of the carpet. Of course, then you'll have to clean up the peanut butter, but it is water soluble, so it is worth a try.

Im not sure it will work for your carpet , but when I was little I would fall asleep with gum in my mouth and wake up with it in my hair. I had very long hair and my mother did not want to cut the gum out so shse would get a jar of peanutbutter and work it in and around the gum until it came out . You can try this and if it works just take your carpet cleaner and go over the peanutbutter stain . I hope this helps .

I had a similar experience several months ago, only instead of gum, we had neon green silly putty ground into the carpet and it had been there a few days before I found it (there was a large bean bag covering it lol). Anyway, I used this stuff I got from wal mart called "Goo Gone". It has an oily texture to it, so you'd probably need to shampoo the carpet after you used it (but it sounds like you're doing that often anyway) but it took up EVERY speck of the silly putty and we have berber carpet so cutting some out was NOT an option.
Good luck and I hope that helps.

I've heard that a product called "GooGone" works on stuff like that. I have a bottle of it, and have used it on the sticky residue that price stickers leave on plastic-you know, the stuff that seems to never come off with soap and water!! It works great! The bottle has a picture on the front showing that it removes "gum from carpet". Don't know where you are located, but I believe I got mine at Home Depot. I know I've also seen it at WalMart. Good luck!!

A.--Ice was going to be my answer also.....not sure if it will completely do the trick but it won't hurt to try. If it doesn't, I would call a professional and pay the $$$ to have it cleaned---If you don't want to do that you can patch it. You will need to cut out a small square of carpet were the gum is and then cut out a square of equal size from a well hidden area---like a corner in the closet---use some carpet tape and switch them around. I haven't done this personally but my sister did when she couldn't get a wine stain out and you can't even tell were the patch was made.
Also, I wanted to mention if you are cleaning the carpet alot with a steam cleaner make sure you scotch guard also. I cleaned my carpets every three months when we moved into our new house and after the first time didn't scotch guard it........What a mistake!!!!! My carpet just got more and more stains after each cleaning because I failed to put that little bit of extra protection down. So the more I steam cleaned the worse it got.
Anyways hope this helps
peace.........

Hi A.,
The pink color is going to be the hard part, it can stain. First, I would put an ice cube on it. The gum will get hard and you will be able to pick most of it out with a toothpick. Then I would try Goo-Gone. Test it inside a closet or something first to make sure it doesn't change the color. Any petroluem-based stain remover should do the trick, but the fumes can be pretty potent. Good luck!

Try putting ice in plastic bag lay it on the gum. Let it stay there until the ice melt a good bit. The gum should freeze and you should be able to put it up all in one pull.
If that doesn't get it you can try Goof Off, it works wonders. Try a small area in the corner of a closet, before putting it on the gum. You want to make sure it doesn't discolor the carpet.
I am in the painting and new construction home busniess, just to let you know a little bit about me.
Good Luck
