I have recently had the fine little baby hairs all around my face turn into gray hairs. I color my hair, so, not too worried about the color. But the texture! Oh it's driving me crazy. They all jumped out at once, it seems. I touch it obsessively. They are wirey, rough, frizzy, just plain horrible. They have the texture of curling ribbon when I run strands through my fingers. I'm used to my hair, especially those baby hairs, being smooth and silky. Now I have this hateful wirey stuff sticking up all over the place. It's giving me wierd cowlicks and even when I straighten my hair, it has a mind of it's own. What do I do? Any products you reccomend? Any helpful hints for softening this stuff? I feel so betrayed by my own hair!

So What Happened?

I tried Garnier Fructese Sleek and Shine and whaddya know! They're soft again. I had been using this as a leave in conditioner. I didn't want to weight my hair down, so, I had avoided my roots. I went ahead and put it on my baby hairs and they feel like baby hairs again!

When this started with me I hated it! But coloring my hair was a joke as my entire head began producing streaks of gray here and there, and the frequent dyeing was frying my hair, regardless of the conditioners said to be in it or that I additionally used.

Alas, i have let my long hair go completely gray, and surprise! It's not all gray. Mostly white at the roots, with beautiful shiny streaks of various grays all throughout my medium brown hair since I no longer use chemicals on it. It softened when I stop abusing it, but I still have the wayward curly ribbon strays around my hairline and I've always sprayed hairspray on a cotton pad to slick them down, works like a charm : )

I can really relate to the gray hair! This summer I thought the littler shimmer around my face was highlights. Nice blonde streaks by the sun. WRONG! It is all gray hair. I dye my hair, but oh my how often do I need to do this? It seems that I am getting grayer by the day and I am only 44. I have thought about embracing them and letting them be my natural highlights, but my natural hair color is a VERY ugly and flat brown. I have thought about trying the WEN system and now I might. I guess I will still need to color and like all you other ladies, put hair product in to control the little beasts. Lol. At least we are not alone in tackling the gray hair part of life. LOL

I'm a hairstylist and yes, it's the texture of grays that are frustrating! I recommend getting a little bit of wax or conditioner and tapping it down just a bit on the grays. One cheap one that works well is got2be glued. It's cheap and can be found in grocery stores and the like, but works well. Just get a small little amount on your finge tip and lightly dab it on, being careful not to get too much on:

I also love potion 9 by Sebastian, more expensive, salon brand but it is a wonderful deep conditioner. It will smooth the grays, but not necessarily make them stay down.

hate to say it but as the years go by it's not just the hair that betrays you - hips, tummy, skin, eyes... Just remember you are way more than your hair, hips, tummy, skin eyes!

Is it on your face on on your head? Threading is amazing with getting rid of unwanted hair. Or you could wax.. Threading does not hurt your skin or turn you red, though. Hurts a bit, but pretty amazing. Even for the peach fuzz =)

When I changed over to the Wen Hair Care System, my SUBBORN need to use 4NN hair color and sometimes they STILL do not dye greys, have been tamed A LOT since using it a year ago ... Sally Beauty Supply sells a nock off called Hair One ... it does not do the same thing for me as the Wen itself but worth a try.

There's a hair salon near me that does "threading" - it removes all the facial hair and it's much less irritating than using creams or hair removers. Check with some salons in your area. It's a very common (and old) procedure so you might do better with salons owned by Europeans or Asians.

Yep grey hair is not like your original hair it has a different texture.

It also will not always hold color the way your original hair does.
Just part of the fun of becoming mature.
