Covering Gray Hair - Advice Please

OK, I admit it, I'm starting to get a few gray hairs. A couple in my bangs, a few at my temples. What's the best way to cover them, without paying a fortune at a salon?

I tried a common, very inexpensive, hair dye. It worked fine, I picked a shade that matched my natural color. It looked great - kind of a shinier shade of my natural color. But, the gray hairs didn't pick up the dye like the rest of my hair did.

Is there a brand that is better for covering gray? Do I need to keep it on longer or is there some other trick? Or is there some other product that is better, since I'm not salt-and-pepper, just a few strands here and there that I want to cover?

Thanks everyone!

What can I do next?

I have to ditto the Revlon ColorSilk suggestion from Melissa...it has specific instructions for hard to cover gray...like starting with those hairs and keeping it on for longer. You can't beat the price vs. quality either...it does a great job for me. I found my first gray hair at 21...my Mom was completely gray by 34. I tried the expensive salon and home color boxes for years. I just witin the last year or so discovered teh Colorsilk and I LOVE it... never going back for salon coloring. Good luck to you!!!

I have about 5-10% grey, plus a white skunk tail happening on the front right corner, like Cruella de Ville. Since my hairdresser does highlights with permanent color once or twice a year, I only have to deal with the roots and use Natural Instincts semi-permanent dye. I choose a color to match my highlights, start with the skunk tail and leave the color on for 10 minutes longer than required and voila, my greys look like highlights. It lasts about a month, costs less than $8 and because it's semi permanent, there's less worry about getting it perfect.

I've been dying my premature grays since 17yo. The best product I found was "Grey Magic" in a tiny black bottle. I add 10 drops per ounce of dye (so usually 20 drops) and its truly made a difference. I get it from Sally when buying my other hair dye supplies, but it can be added to box dye as well. My grays hold the permanent color as long as the rest of my hair. Good luck!

I have resistant gray hairs too! I would even recommend buying professional grade hair dye from eBay. Goldwell is a good one for resistant gray hairs. Be sure to select the double NN colors, ie, I use 8 NN, which is a beige blonde with extra coverage. It's the exact same stuff salons use and is great less the cost of someone applying it for you. There is also something called Gray Magic you mix w/your hair color that is supposed to prolong your color. I tried and didn't like it because it didn't do much. Gray hairs SUCK!

There are some tricks to this. I have been doing this for several years. Gray hairs are sometimes resistant to color, therefore find a box that says, 100% gray coverage on the front, and then follow the instructions for stubborn gray hairs. My brand says to leave it on 10 minutes longer. This works well. The best tips I got were from calling the 800 number on the box.

I have stubbonr grey and have to get an "nn" at sally beauty supply ... so I do it all myself with the big bottle of developer etc ... I am a very dark (almost black) brown so my color is 4NN ... you may want to talk to your local Sally or go to a salon pay to get it done and ask them exactly what they used then from then on go to Sally and do it yourself. I use l'oreal or Redkin.
