I Don't Want to Dye My Hair! (Silly Question)

I'm leaving my 20's here VERY soon and the gray hairs just keep popping up everywhere. Ok, maybe it's not that noticeable to others, but I notice them. The thing is I don't want to dye my hair because I just don't want the time, upkeep or expense that goes along with it. BUT, I can't possible go walking around with gray hairs in my 30's, can I? Well yes, I guess I could, but I don't want to.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has the same problem, to dye or not to dye? I've been plucking, I know the whole wives tail the more you pluck the more come back, does anyone else prefer to pluck vs getting your hair dyed?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

LOL...yes I suppose ultimately I'll be caving. Thanks for all the suggestions on the home dye kits. I will look into those.

I've had my hair highlighted back in the day. I am horrible on the upkeep, and that was before kids. Ha ha!

I've been sadly getting a gray here and there for a couple years now too...but this year they really like to gather in my bangs area. Maybe I can go for the skunk stripe look. ;)

I was just thinking about letting mine grow out because staying bleach blonde is a pain in the arse. So, I'm talking to one of my elderly tenants a few days ago (she's in her 80's) and she noticed that about an inch of roots (gray) were showing. She asked me what I was doing with my hair. I told her I thought it was time to let it grow out. She was all "Are you KIDDING me? No woman should ever go gray!" She's a bleach blonde still. Anyway, just like how a child's comments get to you sometimes, I let hers get to me and went and bought me another box Nice & Easy. pshaw.

I'm a hairstylist and while I'm usually anti at home color, if you aren't doing fancy hi-lighting or changing your color at all, an at home color would be fine. They are usually around $6-$10 a box. If your hair is very thick or long, get two boxes just in case. Follow the directions. Just stay within the same color range as your natural hair and get one made for grey coverage. Get a semi-or demi permanent color to start out with. It will be fine, natural and not a huge headache to upkeep. Go to Sally's and have them help you if you need.

I feel the same way, but I've been plucking for a couple years now, and it's gotten to a point where there is starting to be too many AND because they're just coming in, they stand straight up, garnering more attention! I have bought several bottles and hair dye and told my hairdresser that I plan on doing it soon, I just haven't had the guts yet. I used to dye my hair all the time but since having kids, I just don't have any extra time to spare, but...

While the wive's tale about more coming in, is just a tale, it sure doesn't feel like it.

**EDIT**
After typing this and looking in the mirror again, I think I will be dying my hair this weekend.

I didn't have much gray until 55. Hate having to color! I would go natural, but the gray is the mousy kind and very unattractive.
I have had better luck with do it yourself products than the salons. I just cannot endure the odors either. I get the ammonia free L'Oreal. It never seems to wash out so I only have to do roots.
Just FYI -- early graying is associated with osteoporosis, so check calcium/vitiamin D levels. Also omega fatty acids have reversed early graying for some people.

I've also been coloring my hair since high school because of grays. My maternal grandmother was totally gray by the time she was 22 so of course it figures that THAT'S what I would inherit from her, right? Ugh! Anyway, I have found that with my hair type it doesn't hold color for long whether it's semi-permanent, permanent done in my bathroom, or permanent I pay a fortune for at a salon, it's still only going to last a few weeks before my temples are totally gray again. It's because of this that I've decided to go with the absolute cheapest hair color you can get (Color Silk by Revlon is under 4 bucks at Wal-Mart) & do it myself about every 3 weeks.

You can keep on plucking if you want, or you can go gray, it's totally a personal decision. For me, being only 34, I'm not ready to go gray & if I plucked, well I'd have big bald patches at this point!

i love coloring my hair!!! i'm 31 and have been getting grays for almost 3 years.....i like to dye my hair simply because you can have variety if you choose. i agree with doing it yourself. and if you go with your natural color you wont have to do it as often and could just do a touch up on your roots.

I am 25 and just got my first white hair =(

I don't dye my hair either for the same reasons (time, money energy), but might start if I look 50 before I hit 30!

Maybe do some small highlights first so it is easy to maintain then if you want to do more later, dye it all. I would start small so you don't have to go back once a month!

I just took the plunge with getting my hair dyed a couple weeks ago. I went to a hair salon to have it done because I didn't want to mess up doing it myself. My hair dresser did 3 different colors and also left some of my natural color in so when it does start to grow out it won't look obvious. She says that doing it this way will allow me to wait about 3 months before I come back. I am still just covering up a few grays here and there but I'm sure when I go completely gray I will need to go in more frequently.

My gray started in HS! I am 40 now and I do semi-permanent. Much less damaging to your hair and fades so if a few grays poke out, it's ok. I'd suggest trying a semi permanent first and finding a color your like.

Haha! I started getting two grays right where my bangs were when I was 26, I have plucked them and thought about the whole "wise tale" thing...Guess what! IT's TRUE!!! I swear I now have like 7 of them in the same spot! I do dye my hair but I do it on my own rather then go to a salon and pay $80 - $90 for semi permanant hair dye. I use the Loreal excellence cream and love it! I use to have reddish brown hair (I miss it!) but now dye it a Blue-Black color, I still love it and you would never know that I dye my hair! I'm 29 now and don't mind having to dye my hair...Although I really DO miss my natural hair color! LOL..
P.s. always use an amonia free hair dye!

I am totally showing my age here but I too am in denial and I have tons of gray hair popping up. So what I do is on the days that I don't wash my hair--every other day- I squirt a little Sun In in my hair. Yes, they still make it!

This makes my hair a little lighter and makes it look like it's natural because it is occurring slowly. And because my hair is a little lighter, you don't notice the gray as much cuz it blends into the blond.

I sooo could have written this, only i'm closer to leaving my 30's but still Far Far too young to be grey.

My prob is even if i took the time and money to have it done. Eventually, I would want to stop doing it and i think that would be really hard to do. I always thought i could do it naturally but I am soooo rethinking that one.

I've tried a semi perment color at home Why is basic insticnt the onlythink i can think of?? can't remember the brand but i liked it and it did wash out but not as soon as the box said.

Start out with the Clairol Natural instincts line that you buy at the drugstore. It is demi permanent and washes out in 28 shampoos and is easy to use. It will be enough to cover your gray and buy you several years before you need a little more power to the dye.
