Google Fiber, What Are Your Experiences?

Anyone using Google Fiber?

My first question, though have enjoyed this site for a long time and have been a responder many times.

Google Fiber is being installed in my neighborhood and we have a deadline of the 10th to sign up. I think I only want it for the Internet and not the TV. My computer professional has not had experience with it, but he told me he would go for the high speed service for himself, but for my needs, the "entry level" would be fine for what I do.
My neighbor told me that she thought ATT U-Verse was higher speed than Google basic. I have U-Verse for TV, Internet and phone but keeps going up all the time and is so expensive, has raised to $183 a month.
Basic Google Fiber for internet only will be $25 per month for one year, or $300 up front, then 7 years free. That is very appealing.
Gigabit Internet $70 / month, Gigabit + TV is $120 / month.

Pros and Cons? Any comparison to speed of U-Verse? What about Comcast Infinity?. I used to have Comcast for cable only.

In a side note, "they" say that if not enough people in your neighborhood sign up, you won't get it. I haven't had a chance to go to one of the meetings about it.

Thanks in advance.

Not a lot of people are going to have experiences with this, since it's really only available in your area, Austin and Provo (I think). My area is on the agenda for development and I can't wait! Just the potential that I won't have to deal with Time Warner or AT&T anymore makes me giddy.
The google basic is going to be comparable to U-verse speeds, I would think. It depends on what tier you have with AT&T. The "Pro" plan is actually less with the "Elite" being slightly more than Google basic. You can actually go to their website and it will do a clock of your current speed and use that to compare.
I'm a techie, and I personally would go for the next tier up since we do a lot of streaming content, and the TB of cloud space really appeals to me (which you don't get with basic). The cloud is where it's at and I don't keep anything stored locally anymore.
Anyway, hope this helps.

We don't have that option here so I don't have any experience with it. That said, anything branded Google to me raises concerns about privacy. I had to create a g-mail account to use my current phone but other than that use, I don't use g-mail or log in to my Google account when browsing because they do a phenomenal job of mining your data and sharing it. I know other companies do the same thing (as doe the NSA) but I don't think anyone is as good at that as Google is. I just think that they have waaaayyyyyy to much info on people and don't trust them to protect it. I realize that the fiber over which your phone, TV and internet signals travel is a completely different entity than your content but still...I'd be wary of giving them yet another way into my life.

Just my opinion...

We just switched to fiber optic recently. I don't know if it's faster. But it sure doesn't mess up constantly like our Comcast always did.

We haven't been given this option yet in NOVA....not sure that I would either if given the chance. We tried FiOS when it first came out - and there were too many problems.

We have Comcast/Xfinity for our internet and phone and to be honest - our problems have been few and far between.

We have DirecTV for our 'shows'. Only problem with that is weather...however - we got the cover for the dish and it's helped a lot...

Good luck!
