My doc said I just couldn't have x-rays or nitrous oxide. Just tell the dentist that you are pregnant when you make the appt and they will be sure not to schedule anything that is risky.
What are the rules about going to the dentist while pregnant? What can/can't I have done?

M.,
you definately want to have your teeth cleaned during pregnancy. You may do this during any trimester. If you experience pregnancy gingivitis (inflammed gums with bleeding)you may even want to go every 3to 4 months instead of the usual 6 months. If you have to have any work done e.g. fillings, crowns, or root canals it is best to do these during the second trimester if possible. As far as taking x-rays, I would avoid them until after pregnancy if at all possible. If there is an emergency however and a x-ray is needed just ask the technician to put 2 lead aprons on you for extra coverage. I am a dental hygienist so if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

I had a root canal done when I was 14 weeks pregnant with my daughter. I also had 3 fillings done. The did do x-rays, but put a lead full body blanket on me. Two actually :) As long as they are aware you're pg, they will do things acordingly.
I think you should check with your OB. I think it also matters what trimester you are in. I am 22 weeks into my second pregnancy and my dr said I could go to the dentist. He actually encourages his patients to go becaus apparently bad things can happen if you neglect your teeth or orgal hygeine while pregnant. But I do recall in my first pregnancy that they wanted me to wait until I was in my 2nd trimester before seeing the dentist. He even said I could get x-rays or a root canal or whatever I wanted just so long as I was covered with a lead apron for X-rays. I think I would have held off on x-rays unless it was absolutely necessary but a regular cleaning or something fairly simple, I'd do it without hesitation. Again though I know some doctors think differently and your doctor may want you to wait.
