Girl Scout Troop Leader

My 5 yr old daughter wants to join Girl Scouts as a Daisy scout. None of the other parents have stepped up to be the leader. I would like to do the job but I am afraid I don't have enough time and I am not very organized. I have three children 12yr, 5yr, and 3yr. I work part time for an internet sales company, sell things on ebay and at the kane county flea market. I also take care of almost all of the household duties because my husband works long hours. I am wondering how much work is involved in being a troop leader and how much organization is involved? Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your advice. It was really helpful. Someone did step up to be the leader and I am a very active parent helper. I am looking into getting first aid certified so I will definately be the one going on all the field trip we hope to take! Thanks again!

I am in Oswego. In our troop, the leaders decided what they wanted the topic to be for each meeting and the parents signed up to do the meetings. Other moms also volunteered to be the field trip mom, and the fundraiser mom for fall sales. If you could get a co-leader that would be helpful. You also have to go to leader training. If you have any more questions let me know.

Thanks

My daughter is in GS and loves it. Her troop has 2 leaders. Maybe you can find someone that can help?

It is a great time for your daughter to socialize with her school friends and learn new skills. If you are a busier Mom make sure if you decide to do this, INVOLVE the parents have them help you. Make a requirement of joining your troop is that they are responisible to show up at 1 meeting a season and help with craft or lesson or games. Also if you decide to get another Mom as an official co-leader then I recommend sitting down with that person before going through certification to make sure you both have the same goals for the troop both educationally and financially so in the end you are not banging your head against a wall as funds fly out for field trips that have nothing to do with scouts. I guess I am a staunch believer that there is a purpose for varying groups otherwise why take a child to 10 different activities a month. I need to get off my soap box. Do it, I know it is just one more thing but your child will remember that you took time out to be her leader, just make sure she understands that it will make you a little busier in the planning department and she may need to help out a little entertaining the younger child so her meeting will be fun. Have fun.

This sounds very familliar to me. I saved my daughters troop 9 years ago and we are still going. As soon as I stepped up two other moms offered to be assistant leader at the meetings. The nice thing about being leader is that you can do as much or as little as you want, wether it is meeting once a week, every other week or once a month. We usually had a craft, topic, and a run around activity. I always had a few songs printed out for another leader or parent to help sing along,it's a great time filler durring meetings. It is a pretty simple job. I make sure I attend our Service unit meeting every month and other leaders have great ideas and events to do. You might even ask to attend another leaders meeting to see how they run their meetings, most leaders would love to help. Good luck, you'r daughter and you will love it! Any Questions please feel free to write me, I'd be happy to help you.
