How about a savings bond or money in a college fund? He'll never know the difference. :)
I need help! My son is turning one in three weeks and I have no idea what we should get him. We are having a pretty big party where I know he will get a lot of toys and he already has a lot of clothes and grandma will help out with adding more. We are on a pretty tight budget but it is his FIRST birthday I'd like to get him something nice! thanks!

If your son is anything like my daughter opening 2-3 presents will exhaust him, especially during a party. Rather than buying him a nonsense item that will eventually wear off and fade away buy him a share of stock in a mutual fund, toy company or something else that will increase in time and give him something tangible when he's old enough to care. Invest in college, invest in savings bonds, even his very own savings account....my kids both have brokerage accounts now after all the cash gifts, they add up.
Happy birthday!!!
Honey, he is only one and at this point, it is more of a celebration for YOU not him. It will be your memorable experience, so just enjoy spending time and celebrating with your loved ones. He will not even recognize if you get him something or not. AND he won't even remember it when he's older.
When my husband and I were poor students we went to a birthday party for our niece who was turning one. We brought her a rubber ball, and to our surprise it was definitely her favorite gift. She wouldn't stop saying "A ball! A ball!" over and over. My point is, you never know what a kid will like, and at age one it's usually the box or the wrapping paper. Have fun with the party, take pictures, and get him something inexpensive. Save your money for when he's asking for a wii in a few years. :)
I agree with the moms who've responded, he won't remember the gift. Make the party fun for him - the cake is the fun part! We had people donate money to a charity in place of gifts (as you know those toys PILE up!). We kept the invitation and information about the charity for her babybook. It made gift giving easy and it helped others. And she didn't know the difference. She still got gifts, and truly was bored after the first one! Enjoy the party.
