I don't have anything to add, but I'm glad I haven't gotten the PB rug I wanted to get if this is a problem. I can't believe PB would allow this to go on. Who cares how great the rug looks if it smells????
I had a Pottery Barn rug cleans and it has this weird smell. The very reputable cleaner says that Pottery Barn rugs have a characteristic smell because of the backing they use. Does anyone have any recommendations to get rid of the smell? Thanks!

I had a rug from Pottery Barn and no matter what I did it never smelled good. Not chemically, just kind of a weird almost musty smell. I finally just put it in my basement and will never buy a rug from them again. I have friends that have their rugs too, and they smell funny also.
we had a pottery barn rug and the smell was so bad we had someone come check our furnace believing there was a leak and the furnace guy said it smelled like an electrical fire in the walls...it was a nightmare. I didn't figure it out until I happened to go to a new PB store that had a huge display of rugs and the smell hit me really hard. We ended up having to return the rug. The good news is that we got an almost identical rug from the Company Store that didn't stink at all (and the rep from the Company Store said it happens all the time!).
Good luck!
It is true that some pottery barn rugs come with a smelly mildew scent. I would try to sprinkle Borax, a powdered hand soap on the rug, let it sit for a while and then vacuum it up. Borax is known for absorbing mildew and mold spores. It is a cheap and hopefully effective way to treat the smell in the rug. Hope that helps.
I have the same problem. If you find out, will you please let me know. I hate washing the rug because it smells so bad. Also, I was wondering if your rug also sheds when you wash it. I am having that problem too. Thanks and Good luck!
I am sorry to say that I do not have a solution but I am glad to hear that we are not the only ones with this experience. Ours smells kind of like ammonia or almost like cat urine. I have had it dry cleaned to no avail. I had to remove it from our daughters room as I was worried that it might be hazardous to her health. I am a tad irritated as the rug cost $300. I will be anxiously awaiting the suggestions...... Thanks.
OMG!!! I am so glad it is not just me losing my mind. We are in the process of redoing my daughter's nursery and bought the PBK Stars and Moons set online including the rug. I have been going crazy trying to figure out what that smell was on the tug...it smells like cat urine...uuugh.
I hope someone has some recommendations for ths as I love this rug.
I have a potterybarn rug in my daughters room and it smells too. It is hard to describe, sort of musty or something. I have thought of tossing it b/c you smell it when you walk into her room.
I also want to say that i thought mine had cat urine as well b/c that is sort of what it smells like and I have cats.
maybe you can use some febreeze? or let it "marinate" in some baking soda carpet powder and then vacuum it out?
