Cat Urine in Carpet - Katy,TX

Please help me moms! I'm at my wits end. I have two cats and one is diabetic and the other one is not. For a few months now, our non-diabetic cat has been urinating on the carpet in my sons closet. I'm not sure why she has started this bad behaviour as she never used to do this. The only thing that I can think of that made her start doing this is my diabetic cat urinates a lot and maybe he puts off an offensive odor in the litter box. Keep in mind that I scoop the litter box twice daily and sometimes even more on the weekends when I'm home. I change the litter box completely including washing out the pan etc. once every week. So it's not because the litter box is dirty that is causing this.

My question is this. How can I get the smell out of my carpet. The smell is so bad that it's smelling up my home. I have tried everything. I have a carpet cleaner that I have used several times to clean and suck the urine up out of the carpet. I've tried vinegar and that seems to have made it worse. I've used several different products from the pet supply stores and I've even talked with a vet. I'm at the point where I'm going to get rid of the cat but that won't help my carpet and I can't afford to replace it.

Have any of you moms had this problem and if so, did anything you tried work?

Thanks.

What can I do next?

Have you tried FeBreeze? Have you tried Spot Shot? Spot Shot always worked for me and my cat issues so try it to get the spot out then try FeBreeze to get the odor out or Renuzit Odor iliminator spray (kinda like FeBreeze). You may need to get a separate litter box for this cat. While it's 2 boxes & twice the work, sometimes you just hafta accomodate in this way. Hope this helps, good luck!

I have a friend who swore by Scope (mouthwash). She would spray it on and rub it into the area. It wasn't a permanent fix.... her cat had peed so much it soaked into the pad and floorboard. But it kept the smell away until they replaced their carpeting.

When we lived in an apartment.. We moved in the apartment looked super clean only a year old... Well we kept smelling that terrible cat urine smell in the entry way.. The landlords had the carpet cleaned before we moved in but ended up having a carpet guy come in take a spare piece of carpet replace that area of carpet and pad.. It was only a little area but nothing else seemed to work!

I tried lots of products and they help but nothing eliminates completely except cutting out that part of the carpet and keeping the closet door closed or putting the little box in there.

Let me say up-front that I realize my response may not be a popular one, nor does it answer your question. I don't have any advice for getting the smell out other than ripping up your carpet, which you've already said you can't replace. (Actually, I will say that you should have more than one litter box if you have more than one cat.)

My response is more of an appeal to you to get you to reconsider getting rid of your cat. Your cat's problem will only become the next owner's problem. Your cat may wind up going from owner to owner until it finds someone who will take him in despite his problems, or he may wind up in the hands of someone who will just decide to put him down so he won't pee on anymore carpets.

We have one cat that we adopted when she was a few years old who had never been properly litterbox trained. She poops in the same spot on our floor all the time, and we hate having to clean it up. However, when I adopted her I promised to take care of her for the rest of her life. I won't hand the cat and her problems over to someone else to handle. I can't bear the thought of her going to a new owner and that person deciding they don't want to clean up cat poop on the floor anymore and ending her life. She is a very loving cat and is so good with our very small children.

So I sympathize with what you're going through. I can only imagine how bothered you must be by the smell. I just hope you'll reconsider getting rid of your pet.

Good luck.

Don't throw the kitty out yet.

Nature's Miracle is my standby. It has saved more carpets and rugs (and furniture!) than I can describe. The directions may say to spray it or dab it, but what you really need to do is pour it. It needs to soak all the way through the carpet *and* the pad. Apply some to the walls and baseboards, too. (I have a little black light so I know where to aim it.) Usually, once it's all dry, its own smell and the cat smell should be gone.

However, it doesn't save everything. Once in a while I've had to have the professional carpet cleaning fellow come in with his special stuff. Then the closet or room suddenly grows a baby gate or whatever else will keep the kitties out of there. You have to discourage them from returning to the scene of the crime.

Clean your cat box thoroughly once again, and the floor around it, and start over. In fact, add another cat box. It might make them happier. Some people even say you need enough litter boxes to have one per cat plus an extra.

I don't know if the diabetes has anything to do with it (we've had diabetic cats). I absolutely love cats, but sometimes they behave in a manner I can only describe as cussedness.

Vinegar will seem to make it worse because it will smell horried as it dries. Don't give up on the vinegar!!

I have a cat that has FLUTD and now possibly hyperthyroid (waiting on my blood work) so I've been through a lot of peed on clothes, carpets and rugs!!

Add a litter box in your son's room. You can lay a trash bag on the floor to help with any litter tracking out of the box. If your cats have their claws, consider replacing the current box if it is old. No matter how much you wash it, the urine gets trapped in the plastic :( Canned food diet as well (watch for fish types with pull lids, I've been reading that the BPA in the lining of the cans can cause diabetes and thyroid issues) so the cat is getting plenty of water. Take him to the vet for a urine check. Males especially are prone to crystals in their urine which can cause blockages.

If you want to keep the cat from that area totally, toss a couple of moth balls in there. Cats can't stand the smell!

Good luck

Nothing will get that smell out. The carpet and padding has to come out. If you wait to long you will have to replace the dry wall as well. My mother in law had this problem but the cat peed everywhwere. She removed all carpet and painted walls. It has been years since this happened and I do not go in her house at all anymore because the smell never goes away. Cat pee has so much ammonia in it that it can make you very sick from inhaling it or breathing it in. Your other cat will start this behavior as well if you do not get rid of the problem and the smell. Any carpet cleaning company will tell you this smell can not be removed from carpet. Get that carpet and padding out asap. Put down a rug until you can replace flooring. Try painting walls to minimize smell. It wont completely make a difference but will help with smell a little bit.

Maybe a second litter box so each cat has their own would help.

My hubby has 2 cats that tagged all the carpet. Nature's Miracle did not work for us--I wouldn't waste my money or time on it. What has worked is replacing all the carpet in the house with bamboo floors.

All the above that the other moms suggested! I second the kitty prozac. I had some of my cats who were 'bad' on different anti anxiety meds including diazepam, fluoxitine, amitryptiline, and also prozac i think. There are a bunch of different types you can try depending on what your vet recommends so take kitty to the vet and ask about having one prescribed and say that it is for inappropriate urination. check out this link: http://www.1800petmeds.com/Anxiety-cat75.html?source=cat
if your vet prescribes one of these meds, see if they can write you a prescription and order it here... you will save SOOOOO much money compared to what you will pay at the vet! Trust me!
And for the odor, try this: http://bedwettingstore.com/urine-erase-stain-remover.html one of my cats had peed multiple times on my loveseat and it reeked of pee, and I mean really smelled. I soaked it in everything. Saw this, tried it and it worked. However, I did have to apply it multiple times. It's weird the way it works. It's a 2 part solution and involves mixing it with these granuals and when you pour it on whatever you are treating, it looks like you poured watered down baby cereal on it, and you let that stuff dry and I think you apply just straight solution on it and let everything dry again and vacuum it all up. Forget the vinegar. Yeah, I tried that and it just smelled like nasty cat pee salad dressing. I had a hard time smelling vinegar for a while there. I feel for you... I deal with cat pee almost daily (at least I don't have anymore carpets to deal with so it's a bit easier to clean).

I once had a diabetic cat and she urinated everywhere. She couldn't make it to the box.

Make a paste of vinegar and baking soda and spread that on the carpet. Work it in and let it dry, then vacuum. It worked to get the smell out of my mattress.

Didnt read all the responses but have you tried borax? Sprinkle over the spots and let sit for 24 hrs then vaccum up. You may have to repeat a few times but it usually works.
You can shampoo the spot and do it again, Also we have found this cleaner call mean green orange, which I found at family dollar for $2 is AWESOME for getting stains and odors out of carpets!

Our cats destroyed our carpets. I used just about everything on the market and never got the smell out. when we pulled the carpet up, turns out we had this "premium" padding, that has a top layer that keeps the pee from going through and damaging the flooring underneath. The problem is that the cat pee pools on top of that layer and will not come out. Today I visited the carpet store and am paying a ton of money to replace the upstairs and downstairs carpeting so we can put our house on the market because our cat went crazy last year and peed all over the place. We have her on kitty Prozac now. For $3 a month for the generic version of the drug, I put it in a cat treat and she gobbles it up. Knock on wood, no accidents since. I only wish I had put her on it 5 years ago when she started destroying the carpets.

Hi J.,
I had a diabetic cat too. Most likely your cat's meds (amount of insulin) needs to be changed. I went for years with a certain dose, and then my cat started peeing out of the box too. A change in meds and she was back to making it to the box.
If the pee is still wet, pour salt (a lot of salt) on it. It absorbs the urine and the smell. When the salt dries, vacuum it up. The salt usually discourages the cat from peeing there again.
Good Luck!

We used "Urine Destroyer" and it worked on our (new!) carpets. We then bought three litter boxes for the two cats and changed them frequently. Good luck!

We use Urine Out to get rid of any pet odors and stains. It's the only thing we've used that will get the cat pee smell out of thing.

I have also used it to clean spilled wine, coke, vomit, and all kinds of other stains. It works wonders!
