Cat Urine in Carpet - Las Vegas,NV

Help! My husband just adopted a new cat from the shelter. I say that my husband adopted him because I had no interest in getting a new cat at this time, but my husband had recently lost his cat of 19 years and was missing having a cat. So, we have a cat, about 1 year old. This morning I found him peeing in the corner of the nursery. Merry Christmas to me. When I freaked about this to my husband, he said that he had noticed that the cat didn't seem to be peeing much in the litter box (which is his responsibility to clean). So I checked, and not only has the cat obviously peed in that corner of the nursery several times before, it also seems as if he's peed several other places throughout the house.

So how do I get the urine out of the carpet? I've used Nature's Miracle on a mattress to great effect (thanks to my husband's previous cat - I'm not so fond of his cats) but I had to SOAK the thing and let it dry, and soaking the carpet doesn't seem like the best plan. I don't know what to do.

ETA - He is neutered, and was before the shelter picked him up. He's probably about 2 years old, according to the vet's best estimate. He does use his litter box, and doesn't poop anywhere except there, but he seems to pee other places at will. And I would think he was marking over our old kitty's scent, but he's not peeing in the same places that our old kitty occasionally did - not even the same rooms.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, the cat is going back to the shelter today. He knows where the litter box is, and he knows he's supposed to use it. He does, frequently, use it, but not exclusively. The last straw for my husband and I was coming back home last night to find he had peed on our bed in a couple of spots. Neither my husband nor I are willing to deal with the cat doing this. It's not a UTI (per the vet) and it's not a lack of knowledge on the cat's part. He's peeing in places that not only do I know our old cat didn't pee, they are places that our old cat never hung out. We're done. Thanks for all the advice.

Thanks for writing this. My husband has two dogs in the house that won't go outside if it is cold, raining, dark, etc. and will use the carpet for their business and it drives me CRAZY! I can handle the incessant barking, the added expense of food and vet bills, the smell and hair of PETS in the house, but the peeing and pooping where my kids play?? NO SIR! I have had him rip out all the carpet and lay tile (which is a lot of work that he doesn't like doing, but hey, he wants these dogs) and that helps me feel better since I can use bleach on the tile. Anyway, just wanted to commiserate with somebody else who has dumb pets to deal with above everything else they do. Good luck.

Vinegar and water. The smell of the vinegar goes away, it just stinks while you are doing it. Works the best and doesn't cost much. Good luck!

Hi K.,

Natures Miracle works the best that we have found. When we had a cap peeing in the corner we ended up pulling up the carpet in that corner, treating the back side of the carpet, the pad underneath and then letting it all dry before putting the carpet back. If there is any smell left the cat will probably continue going there. There may also be some residual from the previous cat that the new kitten smells.
Good luck,
G.

K.,
We've had this problem many times with two different cats! I agree with all of the other posts. I've tried Nature's Miracle and the baking soda/vinegar. If those don't work, try using Urine Out. It's a powder that soaks up the urine and the scent, etc. You can find it online. I've used it on a couch that I couldn't soak with Nature's Miracle and on carpets. Best of luck.

Assuming it is just a standard wall to wall carpet, and not a persian rug or something like that, you can soak the carpet with nature's miracle. I've had to do it many times to the carpets in my house. I had a cat who became unable to make it to the litter box, and would just pee on the way. Just soak it and wait until it dries. Other things I tried, which seemed to help the smell, was putting baking soda on, and the pouring vinegar over it. Then you have to get the baking soda out after it dries - nature's miracle is easier.

I agree with taking your cat to the vet - my 14 year old cat started doing that, too. And then the other cats peed on top of his pee - lots of fun with my 8 month old crawling everywhere and investigating everything and following the cats everywhere. The cat had crystals - antibiotics cleared it right up - he still peed in the wrong place a couple of times - we soaked the area with nature's miracle a few times - it seems to have done the trick - no mistakes for 2 months now. Good luck.

Dear K.,

Merry Christmas indeed! Nature's Miracle is great but you might have a bigger problem.

How old is the cat? If she is older than a couple of months old, she should already be using a litter box.

The main issue, however, is that the cat is probably marking territory because she smells the previous cat. Or if the cat is a male who has not been neutered, he is still marking territory.

Nature's Miracle worked well for me, but I would talk to a Vet. I have a lot of sympathy for you and your predicament with a new kitty and a 4 month old baby.

All the best to you.

Blessings,
R.

Odo-ban. We use it in the grooming shop and you can get it at Sams Club. It works really well on pet urine. Good luck! And try making the cat stay in a secluded area, like a bathroom, alone with the cat box until you make sure he or she is using it. Then allow limited access to the rest of the house until you trust that the box will be used every time. You also might want to try having more than one box in the house in different locations. You never know, maybe the kitty will prefer a different location. Don't give up. Pets are great for kids to grow up with :)

you have some great suggestions here!
i know you dont want to soak the carpet but if you want clean then i think youre gonna have to, but you can rent a carpet cleaner from albertsons that will vacuum up the liquid. i know that hydrogen peroxide works great for getting rid of urine smells, so does baking soda! try some of those.
i had cats last christmas, and they peed all over the floor while we were out of town. i gave them away. but i soaked the floor with hydrogen peroxide left it for ten minutes, wiped it up, then poured baking soda mixed with fragrance all over the carpet, left it on for ten minutes then vacuumed it up. it smelled great and the fragrance stayed for months! i loved it.

I have used Natures Miracle and I think it mostly deters them from going in the same spot because of the scent it leaves behind. I believe the problem now lies in the padding underneath the carpet, which,...unless you rip up the carpet and replace a patch of the carpet with new padding,..the urine scent might always be there. I have actually had to rip up the carpet & padding when our 17 yr old cat peed in a corner after we moved into a new home. i know a carpet guys who's great at patch work,..you'd never know there was anything done (if you have the original carpeting of course). Otherwise, you could really soak the area in Oxyclean. That worked really well for me in several places in my house and may also dilute any urine scent the cat is leaving behind. Ultimately,...gonna have to train the cat first. Good luck to you,...And happy house training!

On another note, your new cat might be sick. Ours quit using the box when he had crystals in his urine. See if you see any blood, too. Get him to the vets and make sure he's not sick! Look up urinating problems on the net and you will find out a lot about this disease, if that's what it is. We cleared up the illness and he always uses the box. Also, is he going to go outdoors? That might solve it.

Soak up as much urine as you can and then use the Nature's Miracle. Yes, you will have soak the carpet and it may take up to two weeks for the smell to completely go away.
His new cat should be kept in a small area, like the bathroom or laundry room for at least a week. Only let the cat out when you can be with him. It sounds like he is marking his territory.
Do you know if he was neutered before the shelter picked him up or did they do it. If he was recently neutered then it will be sometime before all the hormonies are out of his system and he isn't so male.
Good Luck!

I had the same problem with one of our cats. It was also a male. I basically had to rip out all the carpet in the house because of the cat. Unfortunately the urine soaks through the carpet, into the carpet pad, and goes all the way down to the concrete!!! When we ripped out our carpets the concrete reeked of urine! I had to treat the concrete before we put new flooring down. If you call a professional carpet cleaning service they will tell you that they can treat it for you and that they have special chemicals and products to treat pet urine. The truth is that it does mask the stains and the smell for a little while, but they will re appear because it is soaked down to the foundation.

When all the carpet was out of the house the darn cat finally started peeing in the litter box! It was a nightmare. Have you taken the cat to the vet to see if he has urinary problems? We had to put our cat down about 4 months ago and he was only a year and a half old. It seems that he had urinary problems which are very common in male cats. Sometimes it causes them to pee outside the litter box and in various places all over the house. Long story short..we adoped a FREE cat and spent over 4,000 on vet bills and new flooring in the house. The moral of the story: nothing in life is free..lol. I hope it works out for you. I am sorry for your situation. I went through it and it was a very upsetting situation.

Good Luck,

T.

Soak the carpet with nature's miracle and let it dry. If you can still smell the urine, soak it again and let it dry. Nature's miracle is an enzyme cleaner and the enzymes "eat" the urine as it dries. If you don't totally eliminate the urine odor (to the cat's nose, not just yours) they will keep peeing in the same spot.

You may also want to place a little pan in the spot where the cat is peeing to encourage the cat to use it. Once he starts using the little pan consistently move it a few feet each day until it is in the spot you want it. Do this before your baby gets mobile.

You may also want to buy a new litter pan if this is the same one the previous cat used. If he can smell the old cat that may prevent him from wanting to use the box. Cats are funny. They will scent mark where another cat has peed but they don't like to use another cat's litter box.

You want to cure this problem as quickly as possible. If the cat becomes accustomed to peeing where it wants, you'll never break the habit.

The reason your cat is doing is .. because of the the other cat you just lost, there is still his scent in the house and the cat is marking its boundries, is this new cat fixed ?? if not do so it will help, if its already fixed which I am assuming it is because no shelter would allow anybody to adopt a pet with out being fixed first.. ( we hope ) the only way to stop the cat from doing this is to either go to the pet store and buy some spray you spray on the carpet to stop them from peeing, or have all the carpets cleaned, so the scent from the prior cat is gone, you must do this also with the furniture, won't be long until the cat starts marking the furniture.

it does not matter if your new cat is not peeing in the old cats places, he is marking new territory... all a common thing with new cats in a home when they are over the kitten age.

Good luck I hope you really like this cat, it will take taim and patience.. get a water bottle and if you catch the cat going near the rooms you have off limits squirt him ..

zer pet odor I think that is the name of it.

http://www.zeroodorpet.com/ It works wonders.

Take the cat to the vet to make sure that there isn't a medical reason why the cat is doing this.

We have a cat who uses everything in our home at his personal potty when he gets mad at us. Having a new baby in the home seemed to set him off and he peed on everything from her rug to her baby bjorn. The only thing I have found that works is baking soda. I sprinkle it on, let it absorb the moisture and odor for a few hours and then vaccum it up. It works like a charm!
