My daughter was "signing" her birthday card to her papa when she got ink on her shirt. Does anyone have ideas on how to get it out before I put it through the laundry? Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I have to admit, I was scared to do the hairspray trick. I used to work in a drycleaners and anytime a customer came in with ink on their clothes, they had used hairspray to try to get it out. Even through the drycleaning, the ink was still there. My boss had said it was because they used hairspray. I am sure it has worked for moms everywhere, as most of your suggestions had said that. I did use the oxyclean and her shirt looks good as new. Thank you again, you moms rock!

Hair spray, an old toothbrush and cold water. Soak the area with hairspray, let it set for a minute or so, scrub a little with the toothbrush, rinse and repeat until the ink is out, then wash. If you put it straight in the wash without getting out the spot then the temp you use may help se the stain. Putting it in the dryer befre it's all out will do the same.

Good luck - S.

Cheap hair spray, I like to keep Rave in the laundry room, to use on laundry that has ink, and even perment marker. Wet area with spot, apply liberly rave, blot, set aside, repete, until you see the ink comming out, then wash. Good Luck I have saved many of the kids favorite clothes with this, use pump rave, not the arosole.

Use hairspray. The cheap stuff works the best. Spray it on and rub a sponge over it, it comes right out.

Hi W.. I have always used aerosol hairspray to get out ink (it does have to be aerosol though). Spray it on the problem area and then rub with towel or brush. You may have to may several sprays in between rubbings to fully remove it. I have found it works well.

Hello W., I have had the best luck with liquid tide. Put it right on the ink stain then let it set for a few hours before washing it. Good luck.

Use hairspray, the cheaper the better. Spray it on the shirt before you put it in the wash and the stain will come out. Good luck.

I use baby wipres for everything! Honestly they've worked for blood, coffee, cocktail sauce and ketchup. Try it. See for yourself. I keep them in my car and in my purse.

W.,

Rubbing alcohol also works quite well. Put a white towel under the stain to absorb the ink and excess alcohol. Then use another white towel, moisten with alcohol and blot (do not rub) the stain. As the ink comes up you want to move to a clean part of the towel and repeat the process. When the ink has been removed rinse the fabric in cool water and then launder.

It will take time to remove the entire stain, but saving her shirt makes the time spent well worth it. Also, check for color fastness - the alcohol may bleach the fabric.

I was able to remove a 2 inch sharpie swipe from our heirloom couch with this method and it has been two years with no lasting issues.

Good luck!

Hi Wendy -

Oxy Clean is a wonder cleaning product. A spray is available as well as the powder. I would try both, follwing the directions provided. I used it to get puke of ketchup and strawberries out of a beige carpet. I was sure we were going to have to rent a carpet cleaner-hubby unempolyed for year a half, not first choice. It all came out - I followed the directions and was amazed! Didn't have to rent carpet cleaner.

Also, don't dry the shirt till the stain is out or it will set from the heat and probably never come out.

Good Luck!

saturate it with hairspray, then blot out the ink. Rinse thoroughly and then wash as usual. Don't put it in the drier right away after washing the spot.... the residual solvent could start a fire. If you run it through the washer first, that should be all rinsed out, though, and then fine in the dryer. Cheap hair spray works as well as expensive stuff. I use a pump spray kind, and just take off the top and pour some on to the spot. Works great. A little oxyclean in the wash water afterwards helps get the last little shadows out.
good luck, L.

Dear
W. Y.,

"Greased Lightning" is in nearly all dollar stores and perhaps Meijers and Walmart. It takes out nearly anything (even mildew) and I am quite sure it would take out ink. Spray or pour liberally and let set a day or two and then wash as usual. If it does not all come out the first time wash one more time after soaking again. Do not put into dryer if it does not all come out because that will set the stain in even better.

W.,

My husband forgot about a pen in his work pants, which got washed and dried, with ink all over the entire load of clothes. I went online looking for a way to get it out and found OxyClean! Soak the shirt in a double dose (two scoops) of OxyClean for a couple of hours (or overnight if the stain is big) then wash in the washer with regular clothes soap & OxyClean and that should take it out. Hope it works, it did for me....I got my entire load of clothes completely free of ink that way! Good Luck!!

Hi. Try spraying the ink spot directly with hairspray. Just like you're using Shout or something. Spray it a lot. Let it sit for a few minutes. Then throw it in with the rest of the laundry. It should come right out. Good luck.

Try Lestoil or hair spray. Do not put it into the dryer until you get the ink out. Otherwise, you have very little prayer to get it out ever.

If it is just ball point pen, spray it with hairspray BEFORE washing. Works every time. If it was a permanant marker...I have no clue.

Hair spray. I know the arisol ones work better then the pump ones, but hair spary seems to do it. Sometimes you have to leave it on there for a bit and even come back and spray some more, but it does work. Good luck.

I've used aerosol hair spray directly on the spot with a clean paper towel underneath to soak up the ink or on top to blot it. Surprisingly it works pretty well. Good luck.
