Hi Mamas!! Especially those of you in Colorado! I want to go to Georgetown this summer for their half marathon. I'm trying to figure out if it would be worth it to take my 6 year old son. It looks beautiful!!! I'd love to share that w/him. But... I'm not sure b/c I wanted to white water raft, but he won't be big enough. (the website said min. 50 lbs and he is only 40 and very small).

Is there anything else to do w/him there? Any ideas are appreciated! I have only been to Denver once before and spent most of that time in the city.

Would it be worth it to go w/out him or to take him? What is camping like there? We love to camp! Any ideas would be great. I've looked around online, but any advice would be awesome!!!! Thanks in advance you Colorado experts! :-)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much Jennifer! Loved the advice... and you're right I'd have to drag along my mom or someone to watch him while I ran. :-) So far I'm leaning towards going w/out him :-)

Yep, Georgetown is fun and quaint, but not much to do for more than an afternoon. I actually had a x-country meet there in high school! I have rafted part of the CO river, but it was closer to Glenwood Springs - which is about 2-3 hours away. It was fun but FREEZING! So I would skip rafting - I agree that nearby Golden Gate State park is a great camping spot, also lots of hiking. There are lots of towns worth seeing along I-70 here. You could go to Breckenridge (laid back ski town) Idaho Springs (another small town like Georgetown) but they have hot springs there if you're interested in anything like that. Estes Park is a little more out of the way of Georgetown, but as a CO native, it's one of my fav spots in the state, and if you're looking for "must sees" in CO, Rocky Mtn Natl Park is #1. Golden is also a cute little town closer to the foothills (and near Golden Gate State Park)

hope my rambling helps! if you're planning to make a little vaca out of it I would suggest not staying in Georgetown, but if you're just going to be there for a short time to run, I'd say it's not a super exciting place. :)

Georgetown is a beautiful town. We just did the train loop there and had a great time. As far as your son having a good time, there really isnt much to do other than that in Georgetown. It is very small and a lot of antique stores.
If you want to drive, there is plenty to do in Colorado. Lots of stuff downtown (aqaurium, Childrens museum, zoo, butterfly pavillion) There is always hiking in the mountains. In Idaho Springs there are the hot springs (not too far from Georgetown). Camping here is AMAZING. I always go to Estes Park though to camp, which might be a bit of a trek. Anywhere is probably just as pretty. I love that there are hardly any bugs here. Is he doing the race with you? You have to think about the altitude too--if he running the race, he might have a hard time adjusting.

To be honest.... go without him. At 6 there isn't much to do that he could really take part in. Who is watching him while you run?? Yah you can go on a gold mine tour or hit up the loop train, but to me, just go do your race and enjoy yourself. If you are thinking of doing other things and areas in Colorado (Elitches, Aquarium) then bring him, but Georgetown alone??? Kinda boring for a kid....

If you don't have a car or want to drive a bit - I agree with Jennifer. Not much IN Georgetown. Camping is great - check out Golden Gate State Park (45 minutes away). Also, there is a small, but fun amusement park in Golden (Heritage Square) perfect for his age, and not super crowded.... Enjoy either way!
