I love Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs. In addition to the things others have already mentioned, we also really enjoyed the Air Force museum, and we did a day trip to Cripple Creek.
Hello, My husband and I are trying to decide on a vacation destination for this July. We are considering Colorado (we live in the Kansas City area). Do you have suggestions of great places to visit and things to do? Do you have suggestions of places that you really enjoyed staying? We have two boys, 18 and 15.
Thank you!!
I love Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs. In addition to the things others have already mentioned, we also really enjoyed the Air Force museum, and we did a day trip to Cripple Creek.
we went to denver last october. we drove up the mountain and took a kid friendly hike on one of the days there. we did the denver zoo. and if our kids were older we would of gone to that theme part there too but with the kids not being tall enough to enjoy that we skipped it. all in all a fun trip. totally worth the 2 days drive to gt there!
For our honeymoon we were trying to decide between Colorado and Utah. We ended up going to Utah and loved it. We stayed in Salt Lake City. Timpanogos Cave was awesome. You walk up a mountain to get to the cave. Look up Antelope Island. You can do a lot of hiking there. Theres buffalo walking by as well as antelope. Park City was great to visit. We loved it. Theres a lot to do. Every year we say we are going to go back and haven't yet. I can't wait to visit again.
Ask your boys to do some research and see what they come up with. They can then decide what to see and where to go.
Many years ago I went to Colorado Springs/Manitou Springs. We went to Garden Of The Gods and Pikes Peak. We ate at a venue where we went through a line then sat on stumps to eat while watching a show. The food was good.
We did a lot of things in the area. We had a good time.
On my honeymoon we stayed in Avon and a few other places along the highway. We always found things to do.
I suggest you get some tourism books and plan out what you'd like to see.
My husband and I got Roadside Geology of Colorado before we planned out trip. It was a great deal of fun to pick our routes based on the rocks and cliffs and more as we drove down the road. We could pick out things like rock formations in the book before we got to them.
We recently put in a simulator in the Denver area. We stayed in Boulder and it was a great city. We rented a house in the mountains and hiked when we had time off. Boulder is a very unique city and the ages your kids are is great. Lots of hiking and beautiful scenery. The city is a college town and has that vibe. Lots of skateboarding parks and outdoor activities. Lots of unique dining options.
We also loved Colorado Springs. We visited there years ago (10+). Their zoo is incredible. One of the best I've visited and I've been to a lot.
One thing I would love to do some day is take the train ride they have from Silverton to Durango. We've never been there at the right time and had enough time to do it. It's definitely on my to do list.
Have fun!
I love Durango and Pagosa Springs. There are many amazing and gorgeous trails such as the Continental Divide Trail, the railroad with fun train day trips, the hot springs in Pagosa Springs is so nice to relax in, there are little day raft trips which are so fun, or you can even rent inner tubes and do some tubing on the river. There are also fun museums and shops. Colorado also has some great microbreweries and restaurants. You can do a horse ride. You can rent bikes or mountain bikes. If you time it right you can go to a music festival or some other summer festival! Our family loves hiking, camping, skiing, and rock climbing and we love to drive up to Colorado! There is a lot to do...it'll be a great vacation. The mountains are so beautiful there! Oh, I have to add this after reading the other responses: Mesa Verde is AMAZING. If you can go there you will love it. Our kids really enjoyed it and so did I. We did a ranger led tour and it was very cool!
There's so much to do in Colorado.. Colorado Springs is great like everyone suggested. There's Garden of the God's, 7 Falls, Pikes Peak, etc. If you want to stay closer to the city, go to Red Rocks, Morrison, the town of Golden, and take the back way to Boulder. There's so many places to hike. You can pretty much go to any mountain town and find things to do. Steamboat Springs is a little far, but a beautiful little town. The Durango/Silverton train was really cool. There's Georgetown, and they also have a train excursion. You can go to Vail, Breckenridge, etc. It all depends what you're into.
All great suggestions from others. These are things no one else has mentioned.
The Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs is a really fun place to tour. One of the best tours I've ever done.
The Denver Museum of Nature and Science is a great museum.
Rocky Mountain National Park and the Estes Park area are beautiful for hiking and adventure. I have family and friends who spend a lot time in Estes Park. They have white water raft trips, fishing, mountain tours, etc.
urgh! i just had it all typed up and BOOM! GONE!!
It would help if we knew what you liked to do!
Colorado Springs -
Pikes Peak
Glen Eyrie Castle
Air Force Academy
Royal Gorge
Denver
Take in a Rockies game - that stadium ROCKS - not a bad seat in the house
Down Town - there's a walking platz - lots of shopping and restaurants
There's Vail, Teluride, and much more. it's a huge state. If you tell us what you like to do? It would help in narrowing it down for you!
have a blast!
Glenwood Springs hot springs pool (was just there), they have hotel packages that include the hot springs, it is a quick drive up to Aspen from there also. Aspen has tons of great restaurants and lots of shopping. It is much cheaper to stay in Glenwood and drive to Aspen and it's very scenic.
On the way up to Glenwood from Denver, you can stop by Silverthorne and go to the outlet mall.
If you don't want to be in the mountains, you can visit:
Elitches (Colorado's biggest amusement park - also has a water park)
Water World (biggest water park)
Acquarium (close to Elitches)
Downtown Denver is booming also...lots of shops on the 16th street mall - tons of restaurants.
If you like upscale shopping, the Cherry Creek mall is the "Beverly Hills" of Colorado.
Hope that helps, I live here.
