Looking for Great Family Friendly Camping in Colorado

Hello Moms - We are planning a camping trip in late June. We are pretty new to Colorado and this will be our first camping trip with a camper. My boys are very active 4 and 6 year olds. Last time we camped we found a great spot near Royal Gorge, the campsite had a stream running through it, there was mini - golf, an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, playground. It was perfect. Unfortunatly my husband wants to hit another area. He never likes to go to the same place twice. So that knocks out Grand Lake and Royal Gorge area. So - does anyone have a suggestion, or maybe a good camping website? We are in the Denver area and like the higher elevations. Thanks.

Have you looked at the Great Sand Dunes National Park? It's a great place for family and it's gorgeous. http://www.nps.gov/grsa/

I'd recommend Glendo Lake in Wyoming!

We are big campers but only go to places that do not have organized activities. (We like to hike, etc.) I do not have a recommendation but here is the website you need. You can look for places with things that you want, and make a reservation as well. There are good descriptions for each campground.

There is also a great book called "Colorado Campgrounds The 100 Best and All the Rest" that you could check out from the library. I bought it and it's great!

Hi there, we just went camping last weekend for the first time with our 18 month old son and vanagon. We wound up in Rocky Mountain National Park at the Moriane Campgrounds. It was really nice, easy, had bathroom with running water and great views not to mention elk all around that are fun for the kids to look at. There isn't much in the way of activiites for the kids (i.e. playground), but lots of little hiking trails, etc. we saw lots of families with older kids and their bikes, etc. Estes Park is literally 3 minutes away and has mini golf, slides, restaurants, groceries, etc....we had dinner in town and then went into the national park for smores and to sleep for the night. It does cost $20 to get into the park, or you can buy a pass for the year for $40 and then it is another $20 I believe for a spot, but really enjoyed ourselves and will go back so we bought the annual pass. Not to mention, if you are new to Colorado, the elk bugle in the park inspetember and it's abeautiful place to go for a fall drive even if you don't camp. The park is only about an hour and a half from denver and you can stop in boulder for a little fun or Lyons which is a tiny town on the way to dink around and take a break.....hope this helps and have fun!

I am not sure where you are but if you are in Denver we love the Golden Gate state campground outside of Golden, it is close and they have showers and nice level campsights. We also like Mueller state parkoutside of Colorado Spring's. I love the state parks because most of them have showers and flush toilets. If you want a really big adventure the Black Canyon of the Gunnison is breathtaking, it is pretty far though( down in southwestern Colorado). And of course Rocky Mountain National Park is awesome, definately worth a trip and not too far from Denver. If you have triple A they have a cmap book that rates many camp grounds, we use it often!

L.,
We have enjoyed peacefull valley and camp Dick campgrounds, just north of Nederland . also, just two hours away is the area around vedavoo(spelling?) in WY. Both are more primitve sites, with bathrooms and some water. OUr kids love the rocks to climb at vedavoo, the small creek at peaceful and camp dick and both just feel like special places!! Also, golden canyon state park is where many around here go.
Have fun this summer!! -A.

I do not know of a website but I would highly suggest Estes Park. As a child we use to camp inside the National Park. I have wonderful memories. There is activities to do inside the town of Estes Park and the scenery is beautiful.

Try Jellystone park near Estes. It is a fun family friendly and lot's of activities for kids. You can rent a cabin, camp out in a tent or camper. You can look them up on line and they are very reasonable in pricing.
