Hello Mamas-
I am hosting a book event at my store later this month with Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp, garden columnist and author of the Indiana Gardener's Guide, as well as many other publications. It is part of a day-long "Garden Chat at the Bookstore."
I am looking for fun, easy, or pretty "garden-esque" recipes to share with guests and customers.
Of course I have shelves of cookbooks here, but I'm hoping for some of your tried-and-true faves.
Thanks!
S.

So What Happened?

My event was a hit and everyone loved the snacks! To keep things simple, I decided to go with finger foods (although my kids love the dirt cups). Shaun's idea of serving in flower pots was great. I lined them with green tulle and green cellophane and my daughter made flowers out of colorful card stock that proclaimed what each goody was. Combined with a French flower bucket of fresh daffodils and tulips, the table was so pretty.
I even invented a "brownie bite" recipe that came off looking like individual flowered petit fours.
Thanks, Mamas, for all the great tips and inspiration!

What time of day are you serving food? The first thing I though of was "Dirt for Dessert" - made with crushed oreos, vanilla pudding and gummy worms in a mini flower pot. Appetizers could either be a green (food coloring)cheese or pate on crackers. You might do fine with a sheet cake, with a garden fence and flowers on it. I would look at Better Homes & Gardens or Real Simple web pages for ideas. Remember KISS: Keep It Simple Sweety! Enjoy the day and good luck. Hi S.! A couple of ideas come to mind: how about cucumber sandwiches on mini rye bread (put a ranch or some type of creamy spread over rye bread and top with nicely cut cucs) or how about chicken salad in an endive leaf?

How about a frittata? You can serve it hot or cold, use in season ingredients and it's easy to make ahead. Here's my favorite recipe:

Serve it with some muffins or scones. Here is my favorite for muffins (can't find my scone recipe online):
Bran muffins (I use applesauce instead of oil and also throw in a cup of chopped pecans):

I don't have any fun recipes, but I have a GREAT idea for serving food! My friends threw me a baby shower and the whole theme was plants. They went with the growing plant, growing baby metaphor. They served all the food in clay plant pots. They used the cellophane type tissue paper to line the pots and decorated the outside with painted designs. It was so neat! I'd never seen anything like it and I thought it was a really cool way to serve the food.

I remembered seeing these on Pioneer Woman's blog and thought they'd be perfect. You might have to substitute the ice cream so they'd sit better, but they're adorable.

YOu didn't mention what types of things you're looking for.....appetizers, sweets, finger food, cakes, etc.

There are plenty of cute cakes out there that are basket weave w/ a variety of different choice flowers on them. You could also do cupcakes w/ a flower frosting on each one. I've seen some REALLY cute ones.

You could do DIRT PUDDING w/ the oreos and gummy worms. You could do this in a large rectangle container or even do it it flower pots. VERY cute. I did this one alot w/ my nieces and nephews. A huge hit! Yummy too.
