My Children Do Not like to Eat Cake

You can make a cookie cake, they even sell them.....I've made cinnamon bun towers, rice krispie treat cakes, donuts, cupcakes, brownies whatever you can stick a candle into.....who's to say an ice cream sundae can't be an equally good cake.

Whatever is going to make them smile...offer these suggestions to them, and they just may love it!

Yes, I do have an idea for you: Banana Splits! The beauty of this is that the kids can help make them if they're older than like 3 y/o, and they are much healthier than cakes and pies. We add things like fresh strawberries or raspberries instead of the maraschino cherry thing. And the kids really like spraying the whipped cream on top!

3 words: ICE CREAM CAKE!
You can also make a giant "chipwhich" ( i did this when i was little with my mom) by making 2 giant chocolate chip cookies and once they are COMPLETELY cooled, put a load of ice cream in the middle of them. Put back in freezer until ready to serve.

worms in dirt.. pudding with crushed oreos on top put gummy worms on it or other gummy bugs, put it all in a new pot and serve with a new small garden shovel

Solid ice-cream cake like the ones at Dairy Queen or Friendly's.

You could make a rice crispy "cake." I am a baker, and I do this all the time for variation. If you have a theme, you can purchase a pan in a coordinating shape and decorate with icing, or just use a regular pan you have at home. decorate it with candy, icing, cookies, ect...
Also, you could make a dirt cake. It is really easy. It's pudding, oreo cookies, cool whip, cookie crumbs. I believe you can find the recipe on Jello.com You can then make flowers, worms, bugs, etc... It's a really good one for boys. If you can't find the recipe let me know I have it. Good luck!

what about dirt pudding -- chocolate pudding with gummy worms mixed in, then chocolate cookies (oreos?) crunched over the top, and a silk flower stuck in -- so it looks like dirt and a real plant (you put it all in a real plant pot). A fun surprise, and edible too.

try www.ediblearrangements.com. click on the kids section and check it out. they are fruit arrangements but can easily be turned into your version of a cake. You can top them off with sparklers when you sing happy b-day. you can also do individual muffins with candles or sparklers in them.

Do they like Jello? You could make one of those big Jello molds perhaps. The other thing was if he like a giant volcano out of ice cream. With chocolate fudge as the lava. Cookie crumbs around the bottom for the island. A gingerbread house with tons of candy on it and they can all just pick the candy off.

Ice cream cake may work, or do a make-your-sundae thing with lots of toppings.

What about make your own ice cream sundaes, or brownies in different shapes, or homemade cookies that you can make into ice cream sandwiches. Do they like fruit? You could do a variation of fruit salad or even have melted chocolate to dip it in (hopefully party outside!!!LOL) Some ideas - I hope they help. I am also so sorry to read of the loss of your husband. How hard when you are trying to make something extra special. Kids have a way of knowing though when someone has tried hard to make something special. So hopefully whatever you do will shine through to him.

What about a cookie cake?

Do your kids like Jello. You could make that Jello cake that they advertise that you use the jello, cool whip and the fruit on top to make an american flag. Of course you don't have to use fruit to make a flag but maybe write happy birthday with icing pens then use fruit to add something to it. Hope this helps.

My daughter doesn't like cake either. She likes brownies, so I may do that. She is asking for ice cream cones for her next birthday (in Feb.!) I am going to use the flat cones and arrange them in a circle on the platter and put the candles in each one. I may use the little hard cake decoration candies for each cone. Or could you make sundaes? It would be a fun activity for each kid to make their own. some kids like to find a prize- put a safe (large) toy at the bottom of the bowl, cover with ice cream and then let them top it however they like. They can discover the prize when they eat.

If they like cookies you could try a large cookie and decorate it like a cake. Another thing you could do is Rice Krispie Treats. Either one of these you could still decorate with frosting if you wanted.
My daughter isn't a big cake eater either. I've done mini cupcakes and that seems to go over well for her. Just enough to eat about one or two bites.

My son isn't a big fan of cake or pie either so, for his 5th birthday I dedided to do a big "Sundae Bar" w/ all the fixins. I made about 12 cupcakes, some cookies, and brownies along w/ the waffle cone bowls and just about every topping you can think of....the kids LOVED it!!!! The parents even had fun making thier own special birthday sundae. Every child was given a candle and we all sang Happy Birthday and blew candles out in unisen along w/ the birthday boy. It was a HUGE hit!!!!

what about rice crispes treats? you can make a giant one, in any shape you want, use all kinds of candies to decorate it etc

my son just truned 5 and he does not like cake or pie either. we did a chocolate chip cookie cake from cookies by design and it was a big hit. all the kids loved it and wanted seconds. If you don't have a cookies by design near you, they usually have cookie places in the mall that make them too.
Its basically a big round or rectangular sheet of a choc chip cookie and they decorate it with frosting.

Being a non-cake eater myself, I always go for the Carvel ice cream cake with the chocolate crunchies in the middle! YUM!
We even had an ice cream cake at our wedding because I dislike cake THAT much!

How about a cookie cake? They are so easy to make - open 2 large premade tollhouse choc. chip dough, mush into a cirular pan, bake, and it is perfect! They are also readily available at most grocery store premade.

What about a treat that they DO like, frosted and decorated to look like a cake? A huge cookie? (You can bake cookie dough in a 9x13 pan and it will come out softer, like cookie bars.) Or Rice Krispy Treats? You could also buy donuts, and stack them up so they make tiers, like a wedding cake. Just go with what they like! Almost anything could be stacked up that way, or made to look like a cake. Hostess ding dongs? Twinkies? It's his birthday - whatever he likes!

Since it is summer time, I always do a make your own sundae party. I have the typical ice cream (choc & van), and all the toppings you find at the shop. I try to avoid nuts, because I have friends with children with nut allergies. But a favorite is gummy bears, chopped oreos, m & m's, skittles, syrups, mini marshmallows, and of course whipped cream and cherry. If you are having others over also, I would make a cake to sing with, and the guests would have a choice. Most kids like the sundaes. I have 2 summer birthday children, and we always have plenty left over!!!!

Why would you want to have cake if they don't like it. Make what they like, fruit kabobs, pudding (you can make an old fashion ice box "cake") yogurt or ice cream sundaes, cookies. Just because it's a birthday you don't need a birthday cake. We let the birthday or special person pick their own treat when we celebrate their birthday or any other special occassion. Picking your favorite emal or dessert makes them feel special. I asked my then 6 year old what she wanted for her birthday dinner one year and she picked , mac & cheese, hot dogs and broccoli. She wanted Ritz crackers and carrots as appetizers. Although my parents had a little problem with the menu my daughter felt like she hit the lottery for dinner.

Before I answer your question, I wanted to say that I am so sorry for your recent loss of your husband. I cannot imagine what that must be like and how alone you must feel. I'm sure you didn't expect to be a single mother to two small children.

I have 5 children...one of them hates cake..we have used those big cookies that have decorative frosting on the top...you can make them at home or buy them in grocery stores or even specialty stores. The other thing he loves is ice cream cake, so that is a common one too. Hopefully your kids would like one of those two ideas.

I have a couple of kids who do not like cake either. They do like ice cream cake..so that's what I get them. I don't like ice cream cake so they eat the ice cream and I eat the cake...lol.

Hi D., I am so sorry for your loss. That must be incredibly painful and difficult for all of you.
My son also "loves" cake and then most times really just loves the frosting. Sometimes he surprises me. Anyway for his 4th birtday party we did an ice cream sundae kind of bar for dessert and an activity. The kids loved it. it was hard to control them with the sprinkles (I had too many options!) But they loved it. we had a small cake for him to blow out the candles and then the adults ate the cake - as did some of the kids. it went over really well. Basically it was ice cream in bowls (vanilla and chocolate choices) then a kiddie table with chocolate syrup and various sprinkles and broken up cookies and some mini marshamallows. We had adults supervising which was VERY important.

make the cake out of what they DO like...pancakes with syrup or french fries or a huge bowl of fresh strawberries with whipped cream.
It could be mashed potatoes or a pile of celery sticks whatever food they enjoy make that the "cake"
use your imagination.

My son does not like cake either. We have had bagels (cream cheese helps a candle stay on top!), ice cream and cookies w/ice cream on top.

For family parties we do continue to have cake, but he just doesn't eat it as we have cookies there also.

My son also does not like pizza - I always feed him before we go to another child's party!

In my family, my grandmother always made a popcorn cake for everyone's birthdays! You make it just like rice krispie treats, with marshmellow and butter and can add m&m's or gum drops or whatever to it, press it into a WELL GREASED angel food cake pan, or bundt pan and turn it out onto a pretty plate after it cools down. Press in some candles and viola!

My nephew didn't like cake either. My sister bought flying saucers from carvel or the cookie sandwiches from the supermarket and would stick a candle in each one! After he blew out the candles she would cut them in half for the little kids. You could also do the frozen king cones !!

I personally am not a big fan of cake, so for my birthday and my husband's I always make an ice cream cake. Lots of people have suggested it, but no one gave you a recipe, so here is a super simple one:

-13x9 pan
-crush 1 bag of oreos and spread in the bottom
-let ice cream of your child's choice melt on the counter for about 10 minutes then spread evenly over oreos
-slightly nuke hot fudge (not so it is going to totally melt the ice cream, but so that it is soft enough to spread) and spread evenly over ice cream.
-spread a container of cool whip over the top
-put in the freezer for at least three hours and let stand for 5-10 minutes before serving

Variations:
-If you want to make it a little more healthy you could use graham cracker crust, low fat frozen yogurt and sugar/fat free fudge and cool whip.
-If your child would like, you can always add extra candy pieces to the ice cream or on top.
-If you have a large party make the cake in a deep dish and use two layers of the oreos, ice cream and fudge.

Our son never liked cake either but his yearly birthday request was pumpkin pie. I notice your son does not like pie either. There are so many fun things to do. My son is now 23 years old ; ) One of his favorite treats to take to school was making him choo choo train treats. I used a ho ho for the body of the train and chocolate frosting was used for the "gluing" of the other train parts. I used soft lifesavers for the wheels, a large cut grumdrop for the cow catcher, a small gumdrop for the pipe, and a partial ho ho for the compartment where the driver drives -- you can use chocolate covered graham cookies for the top or roof of the compartment. We also made spiders out of the large chocolate covered marshmallows using frosting for the eyes and licorice pieces (thin) for the legs. Carousels can be made from using large cookies (store bought or homemade); frost the top then add animal crackers standing up around the top of the cooking; straw up through the center...I think you get the idea. They will enjoy the love and attention you give them for being special on their day. Our eldest daughter loves to have ice cream cakes (homemade or store bought) for her birthday!!! I'm sure you find something special that will become a family tradition for years to come. Our children are 25 yrs, 23 yrs, 18 yrs, and 13 yrs old. Their fondest memories are of the birthday treats made for them for school celebrations or family celebrations at home. God Bless, R.

Kids are just as happy with an ice cream dixie cup with a candle in it, or it it's a party with other kids, let them make their own sundaes, that's always a big hit with kids. A cookie cake might also be a good idea if they like cookies.

If they like ice cream, I would suggest making an ice cream mold in the form of a cake, you can go to www.allrecipies.com and they have tons of easy recipies.

My little ones were the same way, they didn't eat cake. You can do a small cake if you have adults or bigger kids that will eat it so it doesn't go to waste. Otherwise, I would do an ice cream cake (if your little one will eat ice cream) or decorate a 9x12 sheet of rice krispie treats or brownies! Just use cake writing gel around the edges and write "Happy Birthday" and add a few sprinkles on top. That's fun and easy!

Happy Birthday to your son. I just found out about this website and even though his B-day passed I still had two ideas for desserts. Dunkin Donuts on Quakerbridge Rd. before the mall does number shape donuts w/ sprinkles. They do almost all the numbers. The other suggestion and I am ordering it for my daughter's b-day is at the pretzel factory they can make a pretzel that says Happy Birthday and the child's name for a $1.00 a letter. They also do all kinds of designs from flowers to critters very cool!

Rice Krispie treats? You can use a fluted pan and shape them like a cake and still decorate with a little icing or fondant... I have seen this done and it looks great!

How about a cookie cake like you can buy from Mrs. Fields or you can make one yourself with the Pillsbury ready dough that you can buy in the refridgerated section in the store. My husband doesn't like cake, so that's what we always do for his birthdays.

Or you could do pudding, or one of those pudding recipes, like the one for "dirt."

One of the little girls at the daycare I worked at didn't like cake so I made jello jigglers & put them on a cookies sheet & spelled out Happy Birthday Sabrina - I also did hearts & stars - any cookie cutter I could find was used.

It was a fun dessert for the kids & way easier then cake. Plus the children loved it!

You can try brownies with melted chocolate as frosting or walmart sells gaint cookies with frosted designs in their bakery dept my son doesnt like cake either but he loves brownies and cookies

If he likes ice cream, you could try and do an ice cream cake, there are recipes all over the internet or you could buy one at Friendly's or the grocery store. My 3 year old daughter does not like regular cakes or pies either but she LOVES ice cream so I always get her an ice cream cake! You can also get a cookie cake or even make a try of rice krispie treats or brownies, decorate and put candles in them. Whatever your son likes can probably be turned into a cake.

what about an ice cream cake? my kids do not like the cake part either, they just like the frosting. you can do cute cupcakes and then there is less waste if they don't eat the cake. also, pudding-usually vanilla-put it in a fancy cup. strawberry shortcake is also a big hit with my kids.

Do they like pudding? If you search for "worms in dirt" recipe, you can find several online. It's basically pudding cookie crumbs and gummy worms. It's a fun dessert, especially if your son likes bugs. You could make him an individual serving in a ramekin and put a candle in it. Just a thought! Good luck

To answer your question, ice cream or jello cakes often work for children, but it is my experience that most kids eat the frosting and leave the cake. What kinds of cake have you tried? Perhaps they would like spice, or banana bread. Perhaps a Spanish bar, with all those raisins and nuts. Usually little kids don't like cake because it seems dry, so try one that isn't. But if they like icecream, my way would be to order it or a cheese cake would work.
I just know that you will figure out a solution to the situation.

Try an ice-cream cake, muffins, jello jigglers.

Do they like fruit? You could make biscuits (very easy - use biscuit mix from grocery store) and cut up fruit, like strawberry shortcakes. If you are pressed for time, you can use canned fruit. And then top it off with whipped cream. You could also make a cookie cake - just spread the dough on a whole cooking sheet (square or circle) instead of making individual cookies. Or make flower shapes out of them, or something that your son likes - maybe spell his name? Another idea is parfaits - get some clear glasses and layer fun things in them, again you could use fruit, whipped cream, nuts (if no allergies), chocolate chips...

My niece is the same way so my sister always gets her one of those chocolate chip cookie "cakes". It's basically just an extra large cookie with icing.

My 4 yo daughter is the same way. But we always get a small cake to blow out the ceremonial candles...she likes that part and then mini bags of oreos (her favorite) and icy pops or sorbet...her favorite.

Hi, my brother made an amazing watermelon cake for his 1 year old. Make round layers of watermelon, cut other fruit like melons into flowers or other shapes and stick on with fancy toothpicks, surround base with berries. The cake was gorgeous, healthy and delicious! How about a dirt cake? It's lots of fun for little boys. There are lots of variations, but since your kids don't like cake, I like this easy pudding-based recipe:

Ingredients:
Flower pot
Package of oreos*
Jello chocolate pudding*
gummy worms
Plastic flower or plant- or even matchbox cars, small dinosaurs or other animals, whatever he is into.

*may need more than 1 package depending on size of cake

Buy a flower pot about the size of the cake you want to make and wash it out really well.
Scrape the oreo cream off the cookie parts and set aside in a bowl.
Put the cookies in a sealed plastic bag and crush finely with a rolling pin and set aside.
Make a batch of chocolate pudding according to package directions and add a generous amount of gummy worms to the pudding.

To assemble:
Sprinkle a fine layer of the oreo crumbs on the bottom of the pot. Put a layer of pudding with the gummy worms in it, then add another layer of oreo crumbs, then the oreo cream, then another layer of oreo crumbs, then another layer of pudding with gummy worms in it, and finish with a thick layer of oreo crumbs. Shape the remaining gummy worms into letters to spell your son's name on the top layer. Stick plastic flower or other toys in the dirt and you are done. It should look like a big pot of dirt with worms in it.

I hated cake too so my parent's always bought me one of those oversized cookies from the cookie places in the mall like Mrs. Fields. They put frosting on it that says happy birthday and the cookies are big enough for everyone to share. It's like a cake made out of cookie. I always got oatmeal raisin because I hated chocolate but you can get any cookie flavor! I hope this helps!!

Does your son like ice cream? You could either have a sundae party, with some ice cream and lots of toppings for the kids to put on. An ice cream cake from Carvel or DQ or someplace like that might be fun. My kids don't really like cake all that much either, one only eats a bit of the cake and the other only eats the icing. You could try cupcakes as they seem to usually be a bit more moist and smaller of course.

As far as the cake question goes I would try an ice cream cake or pie. You can buy them premade at the store or ice cream shop or make your own with a cake mold or pie crust after softening the ice cream a bit. You can frost the ice cream once it is refrozen to be really hard so it looks like a regular cake.

How about jello molded into something that he loves? They sell cake molds in all kinds of wonderful shapes. Or you can just spell out Happy Birthday with the jello.

First of all, having a Birthday cake is tradition. Your kids don't have to eat it, but the guest might want it. So, you can still have a cake.
The other alternative would be fruit. Cut fruit up into bite sizes chunks. Place the "fruit" (drained of juice) in a shallow bowl or pie plate. Top it with whip cream and decorate with mint leaves, cherries and/or grapes. Another idea would be to make fruit scuplture...little skewers with fruit on them. One for each guest. Place them in the pie plate side by side in two or three layers, depending on how many you need with the sticks poking out of the edge of the plate. Top with whip cream and serve by simply pulling out one skewer for each child. It's not a cake, but still a sweet treat...and so refreshing for the Summer. Healthy, too! (Keep children from running around with the skewers...Ouch!)They can be insrtucted to hold them with both hands...like corn on the cob...and the tips can be clipped flat to get rid of the sharp point.
You could probably try it with vegetables and top with a dip, but I do not know how 4 year olds would like that! Just an idea I thought up...

You can cut it into any shapes you want to make a building, blocks, or leave it flat like a cake.

I would purchase the Jessica Seldfeld cookbook. Its called "Deceptively Delicious" Its not exactly what you were asking but I thought I would mention it. Its one of my favorite cookbooks.

Ice Cream cake. Really delicious and a big hit with adults too.

i think its great that your kids don't like cake. There are so many other wonderful things to eat than that. What is your sons favorite fruit? Does he like sorbet? or ice cream?
My son thought that applesauce was the best thing in the world. Then grapes became the best thing. I am sure that you already know what he likes. You could serve it in a cool design or shapes, or make it look like his favorite toy.

My son won't touch cake either. He only wants cake because in his mind, it's not a birthday without it. What I do is make a cake for family and guests. I put the birthday candles on the cake for him to blow out.

Prior to that day, I talk to him about what he wants for a special treat instead of cake. This year it was Dunkin Donuts glazed donuts. The guests don't mind and I'm happy that he gets a treat on his special day.

Ask your little one what treat he would like instead of cake and don't be concerned if it's not something all of the guest will want.
