Mamas & Papas -

Went over to an aunt's house this weekend where she had a whole slew of trikes, bikes with training wheels, balance bikes etc in her backyard from her 8 grandkids. Our DS tried his hand and seemed to like all of them.

We've got a CHICCO push/ride on train, and think we are ready for the next thing. What would you suggest?

Which is most versatile? which is easiest on the parent? Which "grows" with your child? Which store small? Which are really noisy? Apart from Sesame Street and YoGabaGaba, our DS doesn't know many "characters" so that isn't really important to us.

We'll be ordering online, and need to sort out how to get a properly sized helmet too. TIA, F. B.

What can I do next?

We got our son a radio flyer tricycle. They make bikes small enough for the little ones, but I think it's hard enough to figure out how to pedal and it's too much to try to balance too. Even with the training wheels it can be unsteady on a two wheeler, but the trike feels sturdy and safe. My son is 3 and it's perfect for him now.

For a tricycle, I like the Schwinn Roadster. It's low to the ground so it's hard to tip over. I have twins and one picked the Schwinn Roadster and one picked a more classic style tricycle. The one in the classic style trike has tipped it over multiple times by turning too tight.

Here is a link to the Schwinn Roadster, which also comes in blue:

For bicycles, I've heard a lot of people having good luck by starting with a balance bike. They are small and light. If you get one with an adjustable seat it will grow with the child some, but eventually, you will want to switch to a pedal bike. The goal with the balance bikes is to skip the training wheels phase.

I ordered DD's helmet online when she was 1. They'll give you a head measurement to go by.

This is similar to DD's trike (hers is a slightly different color): http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3155375

We never bother folding it but that may be handy for you. You live in an apartment, right?

She was 3 when she got it last Christmas and we like it. She also has the Radio Flyer three wheeled scooter in red and we like that one, too.

I'd go with a Big Wheel.
