The books my son has loved since he could pay attention and he is 5 years old now and I still read them to him everynight is Quiet-Loud by Leslie Patricelli she also has a whole series that include Binky, Big-Little, Yummy-Yucky and Blankie. They are board books so they do stand up to little hands and very interactive. I got my set at Borders I had to order some but definately worth the wait. She has a new book called Birthday Cake(i think)coming out in March. Have a good one

My son loves books. His favorites are the "little people" books that have the flaps you lift up to see different animals, there are several of them out there.

The little mouse, the red ripe strawberry and the big hungry bear!

He also loves the "goodnight gorilla", so that is a must have.
He also really likes the baby einsten books like: Mimi's toes (bath book) and "neigborhood animals".

There are so many out there! Get a few variaties and he will definately show you what you should get more of!

K. - My son's favorite book, since he was about 9 months old is Goodnight Gorilla. I forget who writes it, but you can find it in with the board books. It has very few words, and it's real cute story. Even now that he's almost to turn 3, it's one of his faves. We've bought 3 copies simply because they've worn out!

Good for you for getting him books. The time he spends with books is priceless, and the time You spend with HIM with books is even more priceless.

Good luck!

Hi K.,

What a great thing, to start your son's book collection! My daughter loves anything Dr. Seuss... Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs & Ham, etc. I bought a very large Dr. Seuss Anthology book at Barnes & Noble for my niece when she was born and it has everything he ever wrote... more expensive than your average board book, but well worth it. My daughter also really likes the Boynton books, The Belly Button Book and Pajama Time.

Enjoy!

Dr. S books are always great as one mother mentioned. My son has over 300 books! Yes a small library. However he stil has his favorites. Such as Green Eggs and Ham and Are You My Mother. A freind gave us No David! by David Shannon (this is great as it seems your always saying no, so they can relate :) he has been reading this one for a year now. He also loves Were Going On a Bear Hunt (you can make great sound effects with this book). However, he really started liking these books at the age of two. Even though he has all these books he doesn't show a love for books!! His sister is only 7 months and is flipping through pages, he is three and just now starting to look through books. So don't be too disappointed if he is not a book worm, it comes around eventually. Also when he is older, I highly reccomend all the kids books from Max Lucado great life lessons that are God centered. My 3 yr old son is starting to enjoy these. One other book for kids birth to 3yrs of age. Playtime Devotions. Sharing Bible moments with your baby or toddler. Put out by Focus on the Family, published by Heritage Builders. It's a free stand book so you have your hands free. Each page provides a short bible verse. A game to play and then a short prayer to say. Example of a game is Peek-A-Boo Peek-A-Boo I love you Peek-A-Boo Peek-A-Boo God does, too! You will probably have to go to Focus on the Family website for this book. I haven't seen it in the stores here. I purchased it at thier headquaters book store in Colorado. Enjoy your time together!

Hi K. -

My sons favorite book is Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see. We started reading it to him when he was 4 months old and he still loves it now at 18 months. He has many other books that he loves but continually goes back to that one in particular. At bedtime, his current favorite is Pajama Time.

Have fun building your little guys book collection. There are so many great kids books - I think my husband and I enjoy them as much as our little boy.

I also loved to read to my son "I'll Love You Forever" I still have the book. When your sweet boy becomes a little older a great book to read is "A Unique Bunny"--it's about a bunny who is disabled and different than the others, yet she overcomes her obstacles as she learns about kindness and forgiveness. If you liked: The Wizard of Oz, Bambi, and Nemo you will love this book.

Hi K.
You are starting a great collection for your son. My oldest daughter is now 26 with 2 children of her own. When she was a baby I started buying Golden Books and there are many different ones. I still pick them up for her and she now has her 200+ book collection for her kids. This is a great way to get kids to read.

As a 15 year school librarian, I have quite a few suggestions! Of course, start off with board books, those heavy cardboard laminated books that can stand up to the wear and tear of a toddler. You can get many favorites in this format; I'd suggest:

The Foot Book - Dr Seuss
Goodnight Moon - Margaret Wise Brown
The Very Hungry Caterpillar - Eric Carle
The Very Busy Spider - Eric Carle
the Spot books - Eric Hill

Others that aren't board books, but that you'll definitely want to have on hand:

The Sleep Book - Dr. Seuss
Cat in the Hat
Dr. Seuss's ABC book
A good Mother Goose; just find one you like, and with pictures your son will like to look at
The Little House - Margaret Wise Brown
Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel
The Little Engine that Could

Hope these help! You might also do a search on google for Caldecott Medal winners; these are the books selected by librarians every year as the best illustrated book for children.

Let me know if you need more suggestions!

My son loves the Little Critter books by Mercer Mayer. He also loves Dr. Seuss books, Curious George, and any lift-the-flap books. I started reading to him at naptimes and bedtime when he was 6 months old and still do religiously. He's about 2-1/2 years old now and we read 5 or 6 books before he naps or goes to bed. I don't know about him, but I do know that it's my favorite time(s) of the day.

He goes on kicks where we read the same books over and over again for days. Now that he's speaking, I pause at several points during the story and let him fill in the words. He loves it!

Hi K.,

Checkout Barefoot Books www.barefootbooks.com

Barefoot is an independant children's publisher that features fun, funky art and stories from many cultures.

My son received some of their board books when he was born and they are still going strong five years later. Some of his favorites include:

Animal Boogie - a great book with music CD sung by Fred Penner (the voice of the Wiggles.)

The Barefoot Book of Pirates - This anthology contains pirate stories from around the world. I love this one because the language is rich, and it helps kids see how different cultures treat the same theme. (they have a fabulous Princess anthology in the same vein - strong heroines from around the world!)

We All Went on Safari - This journey through Tanzania full of animals and savanna sights - you also learn to count to ten in Swahili.

We're Sailing to Galapagos - introduces you to the animals of the Galapagos islands.

What's particularly great about the last two titles, is that there is a catchy rhyming text throughout, which little ones love, and for the older ones, in the back there are several pages of more information about these facinating places.

I can't say enough about Barefoot Books, they have taken over our bookshelves and are as stimulating for me as they are for my son!

They also offer lovely puzzles, puppets, and music for children as well!

Enjoy!
E.
