Hi Mamas,
I need your help finding some great books for my son. He is almost 2 years old in need of some new books to put on his x-mas wish list. I know I can probably find top sellers and such but I would love to hear which books your toddlers really enjoy! I hope all you mamas are having a great holiday and thank you in advance for any information you can provide.:)
I am so thankful and impressed with all the responses! I printed out everyone's responses and made a nice big wish list for my son. Thanks everyone I have so many great book ideas now! I love this site!

My daughter's favorite book at this time was called Llama, Llama, Red Pajama. It rhymes great and she actually learned a lot of it. She also loved Brown Bear, Braown Bear and there is Polar Bear, Polar Bear by Eric Carle. Also do you have the Little Touch Leap Pad?

My son is 3 and loves to read "Eek it's Squeak!" by Louise Rogers its a peep-and-slide book and we read it so much that it is falling apart. Very easy read and short enough to keep his attention.

My boy loves "Llama, Llama, Red Pajama" "Mama, Where are you?" and "If you love me". The last one plays a tune if you push a button and a little heart lights up. He loves to do that and sing along in the book.

All my kids have enjoyed the Sandra Boynton books and Eric Carle books. One Eric Carle book that my kids LOVE that I didn't see mentioned in other posts was The Very Lonely Firefly. The fireflies light up on the last page, and they have each been fascinated by trying to touch the lights. They also like the books that play music/make sounds--we have an Elmo piano book, one where Spot goes for a walk, and an Old McDonald's farm one. There are also the "classics" like The Snowy Day (Ezra Jack Keats), The Mitten (Jan Brett), and Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed (Eileen Christelow). And one of my favorite books to read to my kids is The Kiss that Missed (David Melling). Oh, and Good Night, Good Knight (Shelley Moore Thomas and Jennifer Plecas) is also a good one. I better stop there, or I might go on forever! Happy reading with your little one!

Mo Willems books like Knuffle Bunny and the pigeon books are hilarious.
Todd Parr books like Do's and Don'ts are also very cute. He also does books about nontraditional families.
Those books are not that educational but you can also throw in Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.

My son has always enjoyed the Seuss books-especially "Hop on Pop" and, one that I think I have read over a million times, "Green Eggs and Ham". His current fabe night time books are "Goodnight Moon" (he looks for the mouse and kisses him night night on the pgs he can find him!), and "Brown Bear Brown Bear". He loves the Curious George books too. He is now almost three and I LOVE the fact that he asks me to sit and read with him, through out the day! Good luck and Merry Xmas.

His favorite books right now are the Richard Scary ones (Best Word Book Ever, Busy Busy Town, Cars and Trucks and Things That Go). He also really likes "Everywhere Babies," "Mama's Day," "Opposites," "Pajama Time," and "Kitten's First Full Moon."

Course I only say that about my 12 yr old son because sometimes I have him read to the others. My daughter also loved the one... I'll Love You Forever. The author was Robert something...
Good Luck!

My daughter will be two in January and loves "Llama Llama Mad at Momma" we have been reading that one since she was about 6 months old and now if we ask what book she wants to read it is that one. She will go and find it were ever she put it last. She has even started to repeat some of the words. It's funny to hear a 22 month old say llama. Good Luck.
Try searching Amazon.com for good kids books. We try to go to Half Priced Books or a resale shop for books.

Hi C.,
My favorite books to read my kids, and the kids at the pre-school were the Dr. Suesse books. They are fun, colorful and funny! They use great imagination. I LOVE the book "Sneeches and other stories". It is mine and my children's favorite. Especially "The Pants With Nobody in Them." Also "Fox in Sox" is a good tounge twister and lots of fun for your son to watch mommy read!
And, of course, "Good night moon" and "Where the Wild Things Are"
I hope this helps. Have a wonderful holiday season. God bless.

My daughter is almost two as well and I have just bought a bunch of those little board books by Sandra Boynton. I used to teach preschool and all of the two year olds love those books. There is one about colors, where all the little animals have on different colored clothes, but the turkey keeps putting his on wrong. Every time I would read,"OOOPS" The whole class would just crack up.
They also loved chicka chicka boom boom, and my many colored days.

Good morming...I'm not C. G, don't know why that name is coming up.
Anyway, great books that come to mind to "read" to your son until he can read to you is "Hank the Cow Dog"...my twins loved to be read to and my husband, me and the twins would lie in bed and Daddy would do the reading with different accents. What a fun time that was. We rented them from the library before investing in them. I think there's 42 volumms. Worth every penny!
Merry Christmas...

My boys both love "Zoom City", "Goodnight Gorilla", "How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?", "How Do DInosaurs Eat Their Food?", and "Hairy Toe". "Hairy Toe" is about a monster that loses a toe and an old lady finds it. It is hilarious and has lots of repetition. Also, Sandra Boynton books are great (THe Going to Bed Book, Barnyard Dance).

There is a pretty new book out there that is starting to get a lot of attention. It's called Gallop and is AWESOME! We saw it at this little shop while on vacation and it was over $40, now you can get it almost anywhere from under $15. My daughter likes to read it every night, and I buy it for every birthday present and get rave reviews.

I find that my son (17 months) likes the activity books. I found a really cute one that has the buttons on it that match the book and it makes sounds and also has little lift a flaps on it to find the characters. I found it yesterday at toys r us for like $7 but i'm sure you can find them pretty much anywhere like target or wal-mart too.
Good luck!

Hi C.,
We always gave our children books for Christmas. I am especially fond of "The Hat"(hardboard) and "The Mitten" by Jan Brett. Any book written and illustrated by her is entertaining because her illustrations are so fun. There is a Christmas Treasury by her which include both those plus five others.

"Little Critter" Books. The "Berenstein Bears" Books.
“Little Bear” Books. Of course all of the “Peter Rabbit” books.
One of my daughters all time favorite toddler authors was Robert Munsch. He is hysterical. My daughter also loved his illustrator.
By the way each time I would read her a book, even as an infant, I would also read the name of the author and the name of the illustrator. My daughter knew every author and illustrator of her favorite books by heart. I would ask her who wrote, Mortimer? She would say, “Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko”! She can still recite many authors and the illustrators of children’s books to this day.
We purchased books at Target, Half price books, Bookstop, Bookpeople and Garage sales.

You got some great lists, but I didn't see Guess How Much I Love You, which was much loved in our house! And just in case you haven't already figured it out - our finding was that until at least 4, the board books are the best - before then impulse control is not so much for the little ones.
Happy Reading!

These are the greatest books and are really excellent quality. My children love these books.
My daughter has a favorite book from Discovery Toys, written by Nick Sharratt, titled "Once Upon A Time". It has 36 press out pictures and she can choose a different picture to change the story each time she reads it. She loves it! The girl version is a princess story but I just bought the boy version titled "Ahoy, Pirate Pete" for my 1 yr old son. I purchased it at a show for $14.99. From the back of the book, I got the following information: Discovery Toys www.discoverytoysinc.com or by calling 1-800-341-8697.
