Does Everyone Poop..?

I'm more than likely going to have my little baby on monday (or tuesday depending on how fast the process goes) and I was going through my birth plan again (a joke I know lol) and I was wondering.. does everyone who delivers naturally poop during labor? Like while you're pushing? With my first I didn't even think about it.. the Dr. didn't mention it (I mean I guess she'd probably not say "Oh, by the way you sh*t all over the place!') but I'm thinking between the epidural and pushing you can't really control what comes out, it's hard enough to control when I sneeze much less when I'm trying to birth a baby... So is it pretty much a given you're going to poop at some point during pushing? They asked me in the plan I filled out what my stance was on an enema but the Dr. hasn't asked anything else about it and thought I'd ask you guys.. I'll probably ask my nurse when I go into labor but I'd like to go in being a little informed :) TIA!

What can I do next?

With my first, I assumed I didn't. After my second I asked my husband and he said yes I did. And I did with the first also. Yuck!!! I had no idea. TMI . . . but he said it wasn't really a big deal, it was so smooshed it looked like beef jerky and the Drs whisked it away so fast he didn't really have a chance to give it a good look. BTW . . . love the question, gave me some good laughs!

Only 1 out of 3 did I.
They just clean it up and move on. It's so normal they don't even bring it up in any way. I only found out years later when my husband said something to me. It was with my second child.
I didn't have an epidural or anything, all 3 were natural, so that doesn't have anything to do with it.
Don't worry about it honestly. If it happens it won't be the first time they've seen it. And it might not happen at all.

If you don't have an enema, yeah, you're going to poop. You won't even know it. I didn't until I found that I had popped a hemorhoid and I mentioned it to my mom. That's when she told me I pooped during the pushing part of my labor. I was so surprised, and she said that she thought I knew that she cleaned me up. My sweet mom - I didn't realize what she was doing, but it sounds just like her - being my mommy even when I'm an adult, like when I was a baby myself! Bless her!

You'll pee too, unless they cath you. I was cath'ed with my second.

Don't be embarrased about it - s#*t happens!!

During my last delivery, I didn't. I gave birth on my bed and didn't push. In fact, I tried so hard to keep him in that when my midwife arrived and told me to roll over on my back he just sorta fell out.

With my third delivery, I did poop. The midwives didn't make any big deal about it. They just cleaned me up and moved on. It's the same with the doctors when I gave birth the first two times.

I wouldn't worry about an enema or anything else. I haven't heard of doctors giving women enemas during labor in decades. (It used to be standard practice.)

I did with my first and I was so embarrased. I am due with baby number 2 in Feb and everytime I think about pooping right there in front of the nurse with my legs over my head I turn another shade of red. But in the end you have to try to remind yourself that at least 80% of women do and these nurses probably deliver on average 4-5 babies a shift so they see a lot of poop lol. I wouldnt stress to much about it
Congrats

It happens frequently... don't worry too much about it..

just don't eat corn for the week or so prior... the outer shells of corn don't digest fully, and you see these bright yellow corn kernels in amongst the poop!

It was actually a little weird for me. On the day before, I had the most enormous poop. I thought it was really strange because it would just not stop. Then when I realized I was going into labor the following morning, I'm like, oh, my body knew it was coming so it expelled everything out. I think I got lucky. I threw up when I was pushing but luckily, no poop.

No you don't, I didn't with either of mine. The Dr. did want to give an enema but I had heard horror stories of the cramps on top of the contractions from the enema and I figured I would be in enough pain no need to make it worse with the enema. Didn't need it, I didn't go.

I did. :-/ I remember having that fear before delivery...and my husband would laugh at me. I remember pushing, thinking I may have, asking him if I did as I saw the nurse take "something" and leave for a second...my husband had the look of fear on his face...he didn't dare answer or dare laugh! We laugh about it now, but I am sure I would have hit him if he laughed about it. Too funny! I think it's common...at least that is what I tell myself! ;)

Well, when I had my first son it was during the times where they actually made you have an enema when you got to the hospital. The second son came less than a year later and the enema was "optional". I crapped that time.
Usually you will have looser stools right before delivery time. Mother Nature tries to clean us out prior to delivery. To answer your question, yes, pooping is normal and if no poop comes out during the delivery it's probably very rare.

I am sure your Dr. has probably seen it all. I was with my sil 20 years ago when she had her daughter. She didn't poop. I remembered the Dr. she had just joined the staff told her it wasn't time to push and me screaming its the baby's head (over 10 lbs) and the Dr. was putting his gloves on turned and made a dive for Chrissy.

I wish you all the best for you and your family.

Take care

I'm pretty sure I did, but there was so much going on down there I'm not positive LOL!

I heard that it was a possibility, and I decided that if I wasn't able to be up and around to hit the bathroom after hours of labor, I'd just be ok with it if it happened. If I did, the nurses took care of everything, no problem. They actually put a pad down (like a puppy training pad I think) and just whip it out of the way when it gets messy.

I WISH I could have pooped, so constipated in labor I had to have my back passage emptied by hand. YIKESAROONY!! That being said I was so exhausted, I couldn't care less what they were doing down there. :-( I think that was the moment the students came in then hightailed it back out again. lol

I did not poop during delivery with my first child - it was, in my opinion, the perfect delivery! I was hoping for a repeat delivery with my second child but no luck - I was not only pooping while pushing but vomiting at the same time! I was a mess! I could actually feel the urge to poop and push at the same time and kept apologizing and saying I was trying to hold the poop in but my doctor told me to just push and not worry about anything else! I honestly wouldn't worry too much about it because the nurses have seen it all I'm sure! Good luck and congratulations!

Nope. Some do. Some don't.

For myself: No enema, and no poop. ((Sometimes the enema makes people REALLY poo all over the place, sometimes it keeps it from happening)). It probably helps that I'm a once or twice a week'er in the first place (about 1/4 of people only poo a couple times a week at most, and only about 1/4 poo twice a day. The rest poo once a day)).

If it bugs you, and you're a 'regular' kinda gal. Just go in the bathroom during early labor.

I did not poop during labor/delivery of my 9 1/2 pound boy who took just under 12 hours of labor followed by 3 hours of pushing to get into this world. It doesn't happen to everyone, I promise. I did not have an enema. I did puke all over myself, pulled my hospital gown off & tossed it on the floor while continuing to push (completely naked) until someone found me a clean gown to put on & even THAT didn't bother me one little bit. Seriously, whatever happens during labor will not bug you at all, you will be much too preoccupied.

my husband says I didn't poop during either of my deliveries, and he is the one who would be able to tell me I guess... So no, i don't believe everyone does poop. I didn't have an enema, and they cleaned me up pretty good so I wouldn't have known anyways...

But it seems to me that what would make the difference is if you are "due" to poop or not, if one is "locked n' loaded" so to speak, then I guess you probably will. If you are worried about it, drink some prune juice and try to have a bowel movement once before you get induced, if that is the plan. Don't go overboard! If I were you I would not get an enema (unless you want one)... because they sound pretty unpleasant, and no one in the delivery room will give a sh** (pun intended!) if you do!

Good luck with your delivery and congrats!
-M.

(PS- I did pee all over the floor when I stood up to crawl into the bed to push with my second baby... but there was so much "stuff" going on down there nobody even noticed....)

I think I did... but I was too preoccupied with trying to push out a nearly 10 lb baby to be sure... I do know that toward the beginning of my pushing stage, I felt a swipe on my butt. I had a second to think... 'did I just poop?' while I took a breath to push some more. No one every really brought it up to me, and I wasn't about to ask anyone. lol.

I had an enema with #2 and it was wonderful! I had no idea how totally constipated I was at that point. It really felt great and then things progressed super fast from there. All poop after enema was on the toilet and no poop when pushing. I didn't have an epidural though...not sure hwo that impacts things.

Wishing you and baby a safe delivery and wonderful babymoon! Congrats on your #2! C.

I didn't go during birth, but I went at home before we went into the hospital. I was really apprehensive about the possibility of doing it on the delivery table, so I made sure to go before. Good thing too, because they don't let you poop once you're at the hospital. I had to pee, and the nurse specifically told me not to try to poop.

I have no idea if having an epidural makes a difference, but I wouldn't have known if I pooped or not! I was so busy pushing out a 9 pound baby and there was just so much pressure in general I couldn't tell what was what! No one cares and no one says anything. I was pretty worried about it beforehand, but once I was in labor I couldn't have cared less!
