I talked to a lady who did the complete divorce for her daughter on line. She says it went great. There are also advocates who can do it for you. I spoke to a lady who does that.

I'm a pro se litigant in my own custody battle. It can be done. My best piece of advice is that you find an attorney that you can just consult with from time to time for a consultation fee. Usually a consultation fee is somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 for a half-hour. So do as much research on your own as you can. Find your state's legislative website and look up the pertinent statutes. Prepare your own arguments, then make a list of questions you may have for an attorney...they can be anything from procedural questions to questions about where to get certain forms from, to questions regarding the legalities of certain aspects of your case. Go in to the consultation with all of the above mentioned information and have the attorney analyze your case and answer your questions. They won't prepare paperwork for you or go to court with you without a retainer, but if you just need a little legal guidance now and then, this is the way to go about it.
If you ask me, this is the best way to accomplish anything pro se.
I think it depends on how easy your husband is. I'm in AZ and used "The Divorce Store". I did everything and my ex just signed it. We had a house, 2 cars, 2 credit cards and we have 2 kids. I told him everything I was putting in the paperwork, he signed it and it was done. It cost me $695, which included the woman at The Divorce Store that walked me thru everything and did all the filing for me. If your husband and you do not agree on everything, I would get an attorney for sure, and especially if he has one. Good luck!

I've been divorced and also am a paralegal. I second what Daisey posted. Unless it's a basic divorce, please seek legal counsel. I'd also like to add, if you do have assets and/or kids, DO NOT use your husband's attorney. You can really get screwed by using your hubby's attorney especially if you have assets/kids. Call your local legal bar association and explain your financial situation. They may be able to advise you on how to get free legal help or find you an attorney that will take a payment plan or do it pro bono. Also, your husband may end up paying for your attorney fees too, so please seek legal advice.
Good luck,
M.
Just be careful, if he has a lawyer you will might find that he will take advantage of you. If its a simple divorce , no kids, no house to split then you should be ok. Otherwise the courthouse should have lawyers there who take cases on for free. Check into it. Good luck!
I completed my divorce on my own. Just went downtown (lived in the Dallas/Fort Worth area at the time), filled in the blanks, filed the petition with the courts, completed the necessary paperwork, had ex sign the papers, went back to set my court date, showed up to see the judge, he signed it and it was done! It worked very well for me, but we weren't fighting over anything. We owned nothing together, no property, no money. Child support and custody had already been established, so there was nothing to it. But like everyone else is saying, if you expect your soon to be ex to give you a hard time, you need to get an attorney. I hope it all works out well for you!
Hi L., In Ontario we have Legal Aid where they supply you with a lawyer or one of your choice. This costs you nothing, if your soon to be ex contests this and chooses to argue I would suggest an Attorney.
Best of luck to you my friend
