Diaper Leaking Early in the Morning - Any Suggestions?

My 27 month old son has been waking up about 3 out of 4 days with a diaper that has leaked through to his sheets. We have been trying to limit the amount of milk he drinks at dinner (usually 4 ounces or so) and that is the last he drinks before he goes to bed. We have tried various diapers with mixed success, including the pampers overnights and their extended time diapers. Has anyone had this experience? He is waking up around 5:30 am (!!!!) often very sad. By the way, he is interested in the potty and has actually gone pee in it once (about a month ago) but basically just likes to sit on it. The last diaper we change before bedtime is often dry or just a little wet so I know he can hold his pee for a long time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much. We would all like a little more sleep

What can I do next?

I would go up a size and also use the overnights. I had a friend that also put a maxi pad in their sons diaper and that helped. Good Luck!!

The pampers night time diapers are not very good. I was very disappointed in them. Try Huggies overnights ~they are much better! I have had really good luck with them.

What really worked for us was buying doublers.. You can purchase them from Babies R Us. We also went up a size in diapers and that did the trick for the naptime issues!!! Good Luck hope it works for you...

I put larger diapers on my girls at night. That stopped the leaks we used to have.

It sounds like you need a size up for nights. If you don't want to do that try "Toilet Training in Less Than a Day" by Azrin. We used it with all three of our kids. Worked by 27 months for two kids, and our reluctant one was about 30 months. I have a friend who did it with all 5 of her kids. Great program. You may get by using the smaller diapers, or maybe even none at all. GL!

I use size 6 Huggies Overnights--they work well for us. Try sitting him on the potty chair before bed, and turn the sink on to a trickle--it might help him relax and get his potty out. Otherwise--5:30 isn't that early to wake up- that's a regular time for my 2 year old. I hope these tips help.

I had the EXACT sam answer as MomS. I put my 25 month old in a size 5 at bedtime, size 4 during the day. If I'm out of size 5, I'll put a maxipad (none with that dry-weave though) at the front of his size 4 diaper to help absorb the extra pee.

Another thing I do is try to give my son his nighttime milk/water a couple of hours before I put on his bedtime diaper and pjs. Then at bedtime, I givehim just a sip of milk/water (2-3 ounces maybe?)

Good luck.

In my opinion, althought Huggies claim to have that unique hour-glass design, they COMPLETELY SUCK! They leak like crazy as they have less space where you need it to catch things from the inside coming out. They are also very prone to blow-outs for the same reason. I have had total luck with the Pampers (the Swaddlers one (Crusisers when she gets older), not Baby Dry) brand. For night time, I place the 'next size up' on my little one. So if she wears a 4 during the day, use a 5 at night. It may seem a little big on the torso, but all that space is great! For us it worked really well.
Good luck.

Check out this link on the same question. Lots of good info and the Mom replied stating what worked.

My daughter was having the same problem. She is a super soaker! I will tell you the only diaper we have found that works. It is a brand called cuties from First quality diapers.
We first tried going up a size in diapers and that worked for a few nights and then she just started leaking through them again. but these first quality diapers are GREAT!
I'm not sure what store you can get them at but you can find them online. i found out about them through a rep that does business with my husband. She sends them to us. Worth trying.

My son is about the same age and it seems like he can wet through anything! We were often up at 5 in the morning changing a soaking wet diaper and changing pajama pants! We finally broke down and bought the Huggies overnight diapers, and it has been well worth it. He hardly ever wets through them at night anymore.

I'd put him in the next sized diaper up if possible. Also consider waking him when YOU go to bed. Change his diaper. I know it stinks, but it sounds like he's "unloading" early in the morning when the diaper is already at capacity.

It's not fun waking a sleeping kid, but many of us have done it to either give a baby a dreamfeed at 11pm or take a potty-training toddler to the toilet so they don't wet the bed at 5am.

He just may need a bigger diaper.
Daughter did the same thing and the answer was moving a size up.

I know you said you tried pampers overnights...have you tried Huggies overnights? I haven't had a leaky diaper since I made the switch from regular to overnights 6 months ago (and I know this is bad because I'm encouraging a bad habit) but my 25 month daughter goes to bed with her sippy (water only though). Also, like another mommy, I put the overnight diaper on right before we put her in bed.

you could put him on the potty every night before bed/bath time. hang out, sing songs, read books. eventually he will pee in it and that might be the difference between a leaking diaper and a dry one. and then you're one step on the way to a diaper free life!

I also would use a larger diaper at night. I would also cover the diaper with a plastic outside/ cloth inside training pant. I got mine at Target. At least that way the sheets and your sons clothes stay dry. Buy 3 or 4 and then just toss them in the laundry. Worked great for us.

My daughter is 24 months and does the same thing. I can tell you that I have nothing the works 100% but have found some relief. First, I use Huggies, of all the diapers these work the best. Second, I change her just before she goes to bed. Third, I check her about 4 in the morning, if the diaper is really full, I change it while she is sleeping. I don't bother with wipes or anything so I don't wake her up, I just quick switch out the diaper and it has been working like a charm.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
