We just found out my mother is diabetic. Does anyone have a good website or cookbook that I can purchase to help me out. I would like to have family meals that we can all enjoy including my mom. We have family meals every weekend so I am looking for lots of ideas.

TIA

What can I do next?

If it is white - pasta, rice, bread, sweets - don't eat it.
If it walks on 4 legs - very small portions
If it swims or clucks - you can eat it.
If it grows in your garden - you can eat it.
Fruits - apples are better than strawberries, bananas are great
Nuts are terrific
No alcohol. That's all sugar and carbs...
Simply cut back on the carbs and all will be well. My husband controls his with diet.

Low carb is the key. Portion control also, but that is her responsibility. My daughter has JD. I never cooked special meal. I just cut down the carbs that I cooked. However i also had growing boys who lived their ziti etc i still cooked it and my daughter ate some ut very small portion of it she has always had good control over her numbers There are so many books out there. Low fat is also good, but most people, who are health conscious, cook that way. It comes down to personal responsibility.

Just eat a low carb diet and use real foods. Artificial sweeteners are poison to her body and will eventually cause damage that cannot be corrected.

I believe that our bodies are made to eat good foods that are real, I use real butter, real milk, real sugar, and other stuff. My hubby and father in law are both diabetic and completely control their blood sugar by eating low carb.

That is nice you want to plan some meals that your mother can enjoy too! The American Diabetes Association website (www.diabetes.org) has a section with some great recipes and meal planning suggestions. They also have a lot of cookbooks for sale on their website. Another good source is to sign up for emails from web MD on diabetes and they send lots of recipes each week, including modifying some recipes to make her healthier. A big key is portion size, find out how much a serving would be of the foods she likes to eat. A plate should be about 1/2 in green vegetables, 1/4 protein and 1/4 carbohydrate. Also if you mom can attend diabetes education classes, you may be able to attend with her. Good luck!
