My brother (32 years old) has suffered from mild to severe vertigo bouts for the last 3 years (began after our dad suddenly passed away). He has been to countless specialist with no resolution. He is going to physical therapy which helps a little. He has "learned" to catch the symptoms and deal with it at the onset which helps also, but it doesnt go away. I feel so bad for him as he is just miserable. He can't do so many of the activities that he once sould do without thinking.
I am just at a loss with this. I can't believe that there isnt a resolution out there. The doctors that he has seen just can't find anything wrong.
I have had so much success asking you wonderful ladies for advice before, I thought I would give it a shot for my brother. Please, if there is anyone out there that has dealth with a similar situation or has any thoughts or suggestions???

What can I do next?

I am dealing with the same thing right now and it's taking it's toll on me. I can't sleep laying flat and can't look up or down without being dizzy. I will wake up and become dizzy and start vomiting and can't stop until the dizziness stops and they are having trouble figuring out why also. I do have to have a Cat Scan today on my head and back of my ears to see if they can see anything if not I am not sure what my doctor will do. I wish I knew what to tell you except I am right there with him and will pray for him.

Hi C.,

My mom had vertigo for about six years and I finally asked her if I could try to help...she had been to a teaching hospital and was on meds but nothing seemed to help. I made sure there would be no side effects from taking her off her meds and then I took her off all of them cold turkey. I started feeding her three organic meals a day and put her on an absorbable multivitamin/mineral complex and the vertigo went away.

You said these bouts began when Dad died. Stress can deplete an immune system faster than anything else I've seen. It's possible he's just basically running on empty right now...even three years later.

Feel free to get back to me if you want to talk specifics. The vertigo my mom experienced was traumatic in her life and I wouldn't want anyone to have to deal with it.

Regards,

M.

Does it happen during certain times for him, like if he is exercising or other physical activity? My husband went through something similar and physical training in the army triggered it and then it didn't go away for a long time. He is better now but doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. The best explanation we got was actually from a chiropractor. The curvature of his spine is irregular and was pinching a nerve or something.
Also, did the doctors say anything about him possibly having an inner ear infection? It isn't necessarily painful and can cause vertigo. Maybe he could take decongestants and see if that helps clear it up. I hope this helps!

Three thoughts: 1. Meniere's Disease, possibly. Or, 2. panic attacks related to anxiety. I think the poster, Mimi, had it right when she mentioned the stress (anxiety) that is associated with bereavement, esp when it is not dealt with or Complicated Bereavement. I'm wondering what your father died from. 3. Family members will start having symptoms that mimic the symptoms of the illness their loved one died from. If he's seen MD specialists, he may want to look into psychological causes. Frustrating when we don't know the cause!

Best to you and your brother!
Jen

I experienced the same a couple of years ago. Diagnosed with chronic severe vertigo (lasted for about 10 mos.) was given a Rx for severe dizziness & physical therapy at an ear specialist clinic. Was told not much they could do. Would have to live with it. However, I noticed I experienced vertigo more often when I had sinus related symptons (i.e., migraines, congestion, itchy throat & ears) or when the barometric pressure dropped usu. consisted of rainy days or thunderstorms. (I know...the weather? sounds unusual, but it was accurate.) After the antibotics & steroids for sinusitis then my vertigo subsided. In that year alone, I visited the dr. 5 times for sinusitis. Before this I never visited the dr only for my annuals exams. Last week, I fell playing soccer with my son & everything started to "spin." I used my neti pot & took some OTC sinus meds & it's gone. Last week, the dr's offices were filled with sinus related problems. Also, I noticed when I cried a lot my vertigo would get worse. For me, I believe it's the drainage in my sinus cavity. Either fluid remained in my sinuses when I cried & it wasn't until I flushed it out with the neti pot would it improve. Would strongly recommend a neti pot & just flushing out the sinuses on a daily basis and see if vertigo subsides. I'd give it a couple of weeks. Hope he gets better...I know how frustrating it can be. I'm a mother of 3 and that year was the hardest year for us. When I was down this house shut down completely! Good luck...
