Do any of you wonderful mamas have insight as to approximately how much it would cost to hire a graphic designer (preferably freelance instead of a firm) to design a website for someone starting an interior design business? She has a relative who does this as a side job who she is thinking of asking, and she just wanted to get a ballpark figure of the cost for this service. I am asking on behalf of my mom who recently graduated with her degree in this field and is in the process of starting her own business from home. Thanks so much.

My husband does web design and he said...if you want just a custom design it would be at least a few hundred dollars, and that is a basic design. If you want one that has a back end, content management system to be able to go in and make changes easily, that might be a few hundred dollars more. Hope this helps!

I am going to school for web design and freelance on occasion. Depending on how many pages she wants and what features...aka site login, rollover images depends on the cost. I charge anywhere between $100 and $300 depending on difficulty and how time consuming the project will be. I don't charge until the design is approved. That way she can get an idea if she will like the site before I continue.
Feel free to message me if you want more information.

If you go to godaddy.com you can build your own for relatively cheap. You buy the domain from them & then use website tonight to create it on your own. I created Hytoneconcrete.com and am still upolading pictures & what not. Its super easy to do on your own & still come up with something quite professional looking.

i have been out of the business for a few years now but when i was in it, prices varied enormously for design work. you could be talking an hourly rate of $15-20 or you could be talking up to $75 and quite possibly higher. realistically for a small business needing branding and a website i'd say in the middle of the range is realistic for good, well thought-out design work from someone not only with good training, but real-world experience and portfolio that shows it. freelance would definitely be the way to go to keep costs down in my opinion and experience. there might even be some people out there willing to barter/trade their services, which is a great way in the current economic climate to sometimes save a little money while still getting services that are needed.

one avenue also worth exploring would be a site where you/your mom can submit a proposal of what she needs and people can respond/bid on the project. i'm sure a google search or similar will turn up some possibilities. good luck finding the right designer for the job and best of luck to your mom also starting up her new business!

She may also want to check out vistaprint.com and godaddy.com as both have website builder packages which include design templates and hosting plus lots more for less than $20 per month. Plus she can go in and make changes any time she wants without expensive website designer time.

I designed my own using http://www.webs.com (used to be called freewebs.com ) They walk you through it all and you can pay to have the domain name if you want (which makes it so there is no other advertising as well). It's really not hard at all.

You could check out my friend's website.

JemChihuahuas.com

Once you enter the website (click on the dog), then scroll to the very bottom and click the link. You can then email her any questions you have.

Hope this helps! (And she's local, Joliet area.)

I am in this line of work.

1. It sounds like you want a graphic designer to create some banners/backgrounds --- i.e. the look & feel of your mom's site. There are other "branding" firms that can do this as well. Once this is complete...you can then use those on your site, business cards, flyers, etc.
2. Then you would need a website developer to create the site for you. There are numerous options for this... you first would want to buy your domain name (GoDaddy) and lock in for a few years as well as decide on your hosting (GoDaddy can do that as well). Then you can choose to use applications already available to help you build the site (ex. WebsiteTonight) or higher someone to do that, or you could hire a developer to do build a site from scratch and publish it to your hosting server. It all depends what you would like to encompass on your site. Starting out, it's uber important to have some sort of web presence. As business and income grows, you can then expand out.

I am starting up a line of work in this area... www.webpresencecg.com (in progress)...

There is a difference between a graphic designer (creates the logo, look of website) and a website developer (puts the website together) although often people can do both.

Much of the price will depend on how complex/deep a website you need. For a basic wordpress templated site (one that would allow you to do simple updates to yourself), probably $500-750. That would include basic "design", but not a logo, pictures (which you can purchase royalty-free online) or other artwork. Hosting is additional, but generally nominal.

Try Craigs List for web developers. There are also many places online like sitedoodle.com
