My son will be 4 in August, and is very interested in cooking. A good friend, who is a director of the school my son goes to suggested a specific place to me. My question is do you think he and his friends are to young for a pizza cooking party? I wanted to do something out of the ordinary, the other choice is a gymnastics party.

What can I do next?

i would call and see how they modify the party for 4 year olds. If you plan to have any guests younger than 4, i would go with the gymnastics party.

I did the gymnastics party for my son when he turned 4 and he LOVED it. He went to a cooking party for his classmate who turned 5 and he LOVED it. so much so that he now takes a cooking class about once a month.

however, there's no way i would've done the cooking party for him at 4. the party he went to was totally hands on and all the kids work. they kneaded the dough, leveled off flour, mixed ingredients, spread sauce, spread toppings, the works. you need a decent attention span for that.

the gymnastics party would cater better if you're going to have guests younger than 4. IMO.

I would contact the place who puts on the cooking parties. See if they are accustomed to holding this type of party for 4yr olds. If they are, then I'm sure the party is toned down to a 4yr olds level and everything is done with their safety in mind. Sounds like it could be really, really fun for your budding chef! =0)

We actually have a local pizza place that lets little kids design and decorate their own personal pizzas with toppings of their choice. I think it's a really cute idea. Obviously they aren't allowed near the actual ovens, etc.
I don't know how many kids you're inviting so I don't know what the cost for something like that would be. Pizza and cake make for a fun party!

My son's 5 year old pre-k class had a field trip at a kid's cooking school. They made banana muffins and blueberry pancakes. The kids got turns measuring, adding and stirring ingredients. They explained the cooking process, why it is important to keep you hands and work surface clean, etc. The kids had a great time and were so proud that they assisted with the treats. I'd do as other moms suggested - call and ask how they can accomodate kids of that age.

I think it's an awesome idea! At 4, they will probably just be assembling toppings on the pizza....have fun!

It's a great idea. When my daughter and friends were 4, we did something similar by making castles out of all kinds of ingredients. They loved the process and any kind of creativity that they can apply - which also works with pizza's. Have fun.
