Hi Moms! I need some advice! I am new to cloth diapering and am loving it so far! Here is my problem... a cloth diapering/couponing friend sold me 10 jugs of ALL Free & Clear detergent for a very low price when she upgraded to an HE machine. She said that is what she used with her cloth diapers, but EVERYTHING I'm reading says NOT to use Free & Clears for your diapers! Now this is mostly coming from the websites that sell diapers and diaper detergents so I'm sure they want you to buy the detergent they sell. I want to know what real moms use to wash their cloth diapers??? (I have a regular top loading washing machine.)

What can I do next?

From the research I did before we invested in the diapers, I found that Charlies Soap & Allen's Soap are both recommended. We switched to Charlies Soap, and have been pretty happy. Occasionally, we do have to soak the diapers overnight with a small about of baking soda (1/8 to 1/4 cup per large load - we use the large load capacity, even if the diapers don't make a full large load). If you use baking soda for a soak, some a couple of tablespoons of cheap vinegar to the rinse, to balance out the pH.

I think that most commercial detergents, especially the liquids have additives that are not good for cloth diapers efficacy.

I have cloth diapered two kids for over three years and have always used all free and clear with no probs. I use a variety of cloth diapers from gerber prefolds to expensive pocket diapers and I wash them all the same, cold rinse (no det.), hot wash with SMALL amount of det., cold wash (no det.) with white vinegar added at rinse. AND (this goes against all that is holy in cloth diapering) I will occasionaly add bleach to the rinse at the end. My diapers are holding up great through two kids and I plan to use the same diapers for #3. I am sure there is RIGHT way to wash and I doubt I do it RIGHT but this works for me:) It is a system I arrived at after reading lots of internet info, blogs, and talking to other moms. Hope this helps!

I just wrote on another question about this- I use baking soda!
Cheap, natural and safe- gets stains out well too.
Once it starts getting a little sunnier here I plan to dry them in the sun also for a "natural" bleaching agent.
:)
1/2 cup for small load, 1 cup for bigger dirtier load. :)

I've tried a bunch of different detergents over the last 2.5 years. Rockin' green has been the best.

The important thing to keep in mind is that you will achieve different results with different machines and types of water.

I totally agree with Rockin' Green. It's FABULOUS! Even if it is a little pricey. I make my own detergent and then use Rockin' Green about every other time I wash. But seriously, it's the best!
I know people that have used All Free & Clear with out any problems. But, I've also knows some that develop stink issues and have to strip their diapers more often. All I can say is to try it and see what happens!
If you decide to use bleach, as a previous poster suggested, just bleach your inserts and prefolds. Don't ever bleach your covers. It will break down the PUL (waterproof lining).
Another suggestion for washing, the more water the better! I've found that if use my setting one size above what the load is, I get better results (so if it's a small load, use the next largest setting).

I use and sell cloth diapers and my answer is - try it. It may work for you. Depending on your water, you may not have any problems at all. I use Tide because it seems to be the only thing that doesn't cause smell/build-up on mine. Also, if you use natural fibers (i.e. cotton prefolds) you have a lot more levity in the kind of detergent you use. The synthetics, which is more of what I have, are pickier about the detergent. Always do an extra rinse to get more of the detergent residue off, and you may be pleasantly surprised.

If you aren't comfortable with trying the Free and Clear, why not just use it on your regular laundry and stick with what you know of diapers? Then you have cheap detergent to use up without messing with your diaper laundry (and the possibility of having to strip them). For what it's worth, I do a medium load cold rinse - to get the poop off - the longest, hottest, largest wash with the regular rinse, then an extra cold rinse on medium size load.

Oh, and like some others say, I use bleach occasionally too. Especially after my son got to toddler age - that stink seemed to hang around longer. And I know what people say about it breaking down fibers, but sometimes they just need it! I only use about 1/4 cup and then make sure they get rinsed well b/c one of my son's has very sensitive skin. My diapers are now working on kid number 2, so I couldn't have screwed them up too badly!

I like Planet liquid, but it's one of the more expensive detergents and I can't always find it locally so I often use Sun Free and Clear. Sometimes I do an extra rinse. I have a top loader and a hodge podge collection of cloth diapers. I only use 1/2 the suggested detergent amount of either.

www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com and www.diaperjungle.com both have detergent comparison charts check and see how the All Free and Clear compares.
Best wishes, K.

I have heard great things about Rockin' Green Soap, like the first poster mentioned.

I personally love Charlie's Soap. My kids are out of diapers but I still love this detergent!

Good luck!

i use just a little tiny bit of free and clear. like a tablespoon. if i use too much the diapers don't absorb well, and they stay stinky even after washing. i wash them with white vinegar sometimes-- if they are stinky. also hanging to dry saves power and seems to be better than drying them because they need to air out.
