Cleaning the Toilet

I have a 2 bedroom apartment and will soon be moving out to a 3 bedroom townhouse. I have a really small toilet in my bedroom right now and it never gets used. The downfall to this is that there is a stain (ring around the top of the toilet). It looks as though it is dirt but it is pretty darn stubborn. I have tried bleach and comet. I dont know what else to try. Does anyone have a quick fix that I could try?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for everyone who responded. I went to target today and bought LIme Away and CLR. I actually tried the CLR first and after about 45 minutes it actually all came out. I was really bad. I am soooo happy. Thanks for all your responses.

We have a private well that contains iron and use a product called Rust Stain Remover by Whink, we buy it from Walmart in by the toilet cleaning supplies. It works better than anything we have ever used.

It sounds like a hard water stain. You might try some Lime Away or CLR. That might help. I bought some stuff at Wal-Mart called The Works toilet cleaner. I put some on there and let it sit for a few minutes, and it got rid of my hard water stain really good. The plus side is that I think it's cheaper than the Lime Away.

I once heard a can of Coke (that's right the soda!) would take any stain off a toilet but never tried it. Always worth a try!!

You might try a pumice stone. It has worked for me. Before you
use it check a small area to be sure it doesn't scratch the surface. I've never had a problem with any scratching.

I have a really old tub that the paint is wearing off on so dirt stays stuck in it. I won't use it because it seems dirty to me no matter what I do.
Well, I had my uncle fixing a clogged sink and somehow some draino ended up in the tub when he was replacing the old sink. There is a gorgeous, clean white spot in my tub now, lol.
I think Draino would work.

Denture cleaner works wonders! You'll have to adjust the flushing mechanism so the water line goes up above the stain. Drop in some of the denture cleaner and voila!

try baking soda and vinegar. works every time for me and it doesn't contain carcinogens or pollute our water.

quickly poor about a gallon of water into the toilet. This will empty the toilet of most of the water. Then take Lime Away and squirt it down and leave it for at least an hour. Scrub it and it should come clean. If it doesn't I just repeat the process until it does. I have this same problem with a toilet in our basement and I usually scrub it down really well each time I have company who may need to use it.

If the pumice stone doesn't work, go to the drywall section of your local home improvement store and buy a package of drywall sanding paper (metal, not really paper). Keep it wet in the water, wear gloves and scrub the ring... it works on ANY hard water or calcified stain. Can scratch so make sure it stays wet!

Go to Wal-Mart and buy The Works toilet bowl cleaner!! It is awsome and only costs around 1.50 for a bottle. I use it wall the time because we have very hard water and constantly get rust stains and water marks in our toilet.

If you pour Limeaway in at night and let it sit until morning, it usually comes right off. You might have to go hands in with a razor blade or something hard like that to scrape but it should come off.

Try the "Works" for toilets. It is a very potent chemical, so make sure that you have plenty of ventilation. But it works wonders. Good luck.

You can go to any Ace Hardware store, buy toilet bowl cleaner with acid, works great, but wear gloves, and a mask.

I've heard that CLR will do the trick, but have never tried it.

I've also heard of pouring a COKE in it and have tried that without success. The trouble is that most toilets these days have an overflow system in it and you could pour buckets of water in the toilet but it will drain until it reaches that water level line, so the Coke doesn't sit above the water line enough to soak the entire line.

I'll be watching this post for responses becase I also have this problem of which I can't seem to resolve.

I use a product called SnoBowl - get it at Target for a little over a $1.00

It has acid in it and works pretty much on its own! Really don't have to scrub much, or at all... just let it work for a few minutes and then brush it off (with a toilet brush).

Good luck!

two things: clorox toilet wands are made of awesome. they get really stubborn spots sparkly clean, so you could try that. you could also try pouring a regular old coca-cola in there too - sounds weird, but coke can clean corrosion off of car batteries. :) makes you wanna crack open a cold coke & take a big drink, right?

good luck!
