I had great success with Nature's Miracle, you can get it at the pet stores. Follow the directions and really saturate the area. You may need to retreat to get the odor completely out, but it does work.
Best of luck, I feel your pain...
I have found despite the vinegar and baking soda that many use that this doesn't take care of the oils in the urine and cats will go back to that spot. There is a spray (I purchased at walmart) it is a cat odor neutralizer and I unfortunately cannot remember the name but it has enzymes that actually break down the urine and get rid of the smell much more effectively. I always soak the area with this and let it sit for a few days then follow up with the steam cleaner.
At the pet store there is this stuff called Urine be Gone. If you have a steam cleaner, use that and then spray with this stuff.
also, Vinegar should help get it out. ( we actually tore are carpet out because of it.) not sure if that is an option or not.
I had this problem in my van after picking up our cat from vet, tried all the listed suggestions but the smell would not go away, especially in the heat of AZ. Tried Odoban and it worked!!!! Find it at Sam's Club, Walmart, Walgreens. Odoban is a great cleaner/disinfectant!
1 cup vinegar, 1 tablespoon dishwashing soap, 3 drops eucalyptus oil. Saturate and blot. Saturate and blot. Saturate and blot.
We have pets as well and we use Nature's Miracle stain and ordor remover. It works great. It's a liquid. I blot the area with a towel, saturate the spots with Nature's Miracle and wipe with the towel and let dry. We get it at the pet store. It's in a white bottle with a red cap and red lettering. As a matter of fact, we just ran out, I have to go get more...I'm potty training my son. :-)
Looks like you got some great responses on the urine/odor removal.
However, you need to address what is making kitty pee in inappropriate places. It is either a medical or a behavioral issue but you need to rule out medical. Call your vet and they will ask you the right questions to determine if a visit is necessary. You didn't say whether kitty was boy or a girl but if you have a male, I would definitely call the vet sooner than later because if it is crystals, he could get a plugged urethra and that could cause death in 24 hours. Regardless, crystals or stones cause pain though in either sex.
ONLY use Nature's Miracle. If you use anything else before it, the pee won't come out. The Nature's Miracle uses an enzymatic reaction that breaks apart the cat urine. All other products may get out some of the odor, but will not fully get the pee out. Good luck!
We only use Nature's Miracle in our house for all pet and people stains....Works GREAT....
They have it at Petsmart and Petco and also Fleet Farm (not sure where you are located)....
We also invested in a cheap black light and are able to look for stains at night (it's kinda gross because just when you think your carpet is clean and you turn on the black light and see stains....)
Good luck!!!
My neighbor across the street owns a carpet cleaning company... when we had 3 cats he recommended this...
A solution made of 1 part rubbing alcohol and 1 part ammonia... then SATURATE the area to make sure it goes into the pad.
It smells funky going in but WOW, it worked!
