Since my daughter was born a year ago, the oldest and most aggresive of our two cats has taken to peeing not only around the house (on the carpet, the wall, etc) but on my child's laundry basket, bookshelf, changing table, etc. Its, of course, the ickyest thing ever. We have tried cat repellent in those spots she likes, we've tried putting pepper or chili powder on those spots as a homeopathic rememdy, and have used bottles of Natures Miracle and NoMoreIckyPooh. Both of these sprays have worked to get most of the urine smell out, but after having spoken with several vets and even a feline behaviorist, the only way to get the cat to stop peeing on spots which they have already uninated on is to get rid of the cat.
When my husband and I heard this news we were quite upset. We love our cats, but having a house and carpet that smells like urine is unacceptable, especially with toddlers and crawlers around. The feline behaviorist told us that this urinating is a behavioural issue directly caused by the cat's jealousy of a new child and/or not receving the attention it needs. The behavior can ONLY be extinguished one the child is no longer in the picture: of COURSE you will not get rid of your child, but a cat that has behavioral, jealousy seated spraying can be easily placed in another adoptive home without a baby, and the urinating will extinguish itself.
Let me tell you, I agonized over my decision. I have singlehandedly kept the Natures Miracle and NoMoreIckyPoo (availible in most pet stores) in business for months and months, and we finally had to make the decision to adopt the cat out to another family. She is now VERY happy in a child free household, is thriving, and is not spraying anymore. It was the best thing for all of us in the end: I am in no way suggesting you get rid of your cat, but know that if you cannot do the pee-cleaning thing anymore, you arent alone, and you arent a bad kitty parent by placing the kitty in another home.
