My sister's cat urinated in my mothers house. On the carpet, on the oak woodwork and on a chair that my parents purchased when they first got married. Is there anything that will get rid of the smell? She has steam cleaned the carpet, she has used peroxide I don't even know what else, but I wanted to offer her some suggestions.

Try Baking Soda and Extra Strength FaBreeze (maybe not together). Also, go to a pet store and ask them, there are special products just for this. Good Luck!!!

Hi J. -

My Mom just had this happen to a really nice upholstered chair of hers and someone recommended Anti-Icky-poo cleaner www.anti-icky-poo.net/ and my mom said it absolutely worked wonders (she had strong cat pee too!). It's worth a try :)

Nature's miracle. It is an enzyme based cleaner that really works. We had to use it on a carpeted room that a previous tenants' dog urinated in. We ditched the carpet and poured it directly onto the concrete.
It comes in a white bottle w red writing and is formulated for dogs or cats- get the right one. Petco or Petsmart should carry it.

"Nature's Miracle" found at pet food stores. I'm sure you'll get a dozen or more replies telling you the same thing. It works like a charm!

One thing we've done with carpet smells that were BAD was to pull back the carpet, cut out a piece of the padding and replace it, and then clean the carpet well, let dry, and replace (tack down well). Good luck.

Yep, Nature's Miracle. I bought a house a few years ago that had cat urine EVERYWHERE. So disgusting. I think the seller hid the urine marks/smell with powder and perfumes while selling because as soon as I moved in to replace the carpeting, the stench and stains were overwhelming. The only thing that helped at all was Nature's Miracle.

I don't know if this will work. Any other mom's ever try vinegar and water, 1/2 and 1/2 in a spray bottle, spray it on the smell and it should go away. I know this works for my car when my son got car sick in it. The vinegar smell goes away and takes out the other yucky smells. Try it on a hidden spot to make sure it will not damage any thing first.

Have you tried the enzymatic type cleaners yet? They use enzymes to break down the odor causing bacteria. In my experience the best one seems to be Nature's Miracle Just For Cats. It works well and doesn't smell as strange as the others. But when the directions say you have to soak the area, they really mean it! Soak the spot well and let it dry, it can take a week. I'm not sure what to do for the woodwork though, the spray version of the same stuff might help.

We had a similar situation with one of our cats. We did not have luck with vinegar or Nature's Miracle. The vinegar left crystals in our carpet in fact. We found a product called Urine Out. It's the only thing that worked on our furniture at least. You can find it at planeturine.com. We ended up having to tear out our carpet, clean the cement with rubbing alcohol and paint over it with primer and install wood flooring. But our problem had gone on for a few years with every other method attempted and we were expecting a baby so we wanted to tackle it once and for all. Extreme? Perhaps. Did it work? You bet!

Good luck!

Well, I have two cats of my own, and they have both had their "moments", but the smell is gone now and the stains are out, and it took time (of course) and also a handful of products specifically made for that kind of stuff. Maybe you could find out what products work best for you?

Hi J.,
I have had great success with Nature's miracle. I have a crazy dog that likes to mark things. First I dab the urine if its wet. If not just move onto the next step. I spray it on the area, dab a it and then I go back and I literally soak the fabric or carpet with the Nature's miracle and let it and it takes care of it. It is sold at all major pet stores and I think at home depot as well. I've had carpet cleaners come with their black lights to clean up after and they can't even pick it up with their black lights. Hope that helps.

Darn those cute fuzzy critters!

I have a cat and he has the same problem. He's so particular about his litter box that if there is pee/poop that HE didn't cover up with litter, he choose an alternative to the litter box, certain areas of our carpet. <sigh>

Ironically, an email newsletter I received this morning stated,

"Cats hate the smell of citrus. So, instead of throwing away orange, lemon and grapefruit peels, soak those rinds in a large container of water. Pour the water into a spray bottle and spray the area. Experiment to see how often you need to repeat."

I have yet to try this but I'm sure eager to stock up on some citrus fruit! I assume the urine needs to be cleaned as much as possible with products geared for this type of problem, then as a preventitive measure, to use the citrus spray.

I'd love to know if this works for your mom! :)

I wish I had some advice about the wood flooring. Sorry!

Try using vinegar. Let it set for a little while and then dry it up, it has always worked for me.

I have had pet issues in my house and the only thing I found to work is Nature's Miracle. You can get the original or the one specific to cats. Both work well. Stay away from the citrus one because I found it does not work as well as the original. You pour it right on the area that the cat soiled. You can put it in a spray bottle and spray it directly on the wood as well. I have even put it in my steam cleaner and used it that way as well. Nature's Miracle can be bought at Petco, Petsmart or any other pet specialty store. It breaks down the enzymes, so the cat won't keep going back to the same spot. Good luck!!

Hi,

Try Basic-G from Shaklee. It's a germicide that kills odors. I know someone who bought a brand new couch off Craig's list that had a ruffle along the bottom of it. It was being sold because it was covered in dog urine and the owners couldn't get the smell out. She soaked it in Basic-G and the smell out. You can find it at www.greennutrition.info. Let me know if you have any questions and good luck.

I love cats & dogs, have had them all my life, and yet there are things I really can't love about them. Peeing wherever at times is one of them. Fortunately, there is a product that was developed a few years ago that really takes care of the problem. Tell your sister to get some Nature's Miracle. It's too bad she didn't know about it before she did all the other things, because you're supposed to put it exactly where the cat (or dog, or human) urine spot is. You pour it right on the spot and the enzymes eat up the smell. You might have to do it more than once, but it WILL take care of it. I've been using it for years now & LOVE it as much as my animals.

(Jeez, that sounds like a professionally written testimonial - I SWEAR I am not employed by the company, and I do NOT have stock either!)

All the best,
Colleen

I have found that the only thing that gets cat urine stains out of blankets/laundry is ammonia. I have washed with ammonia and then rewashed with regular detergent to get the ammonia out. I'm not sure how you might do that with carpet and furniture. Perhaps saturate carpet or chair with ammonia and then rinse/rewash really good.
