Can Teething Really Cause Vomiting and Diarrhea?

My 15 month old is cutting 4 molars right now. He's been randomly vomiting (once or twice a day, not every day) and having diarrhea (1-3 times a day, not every day) for the past couple of weeks or so, which is when the molars started coming in. His other symptoms are mild fevers (on and off), whining, drooling, frequently waking at night, clinginess- all his usual teething symptoms. He's eating and drinking alright.

What can I do next?

My pediatrician explained that when a child is teething, their bodies' immune system is lowered because their bodies are working at getting those teeth in, which means they are more prone to getting a minor cold and have a harder time fighting off other germs. (which I think helps build up the immune system). Makes sense to me and explains why they have the symptoms they do at teething times.

Doctors will tell you no but in real life, I have seen it with my own children, other family members, and friends.

Yes....and a fever. Not always, but it CAN.

We give our kids for teething - liquid calmag by Bluebonnett or Lifetime bluberrry flavor - and it's works great. Calcium is a natural painkiller and nervous system relaxant. It helps with pain tremendously. 2 of our kids breezed through teething, as far as pain goes, with just the calmag. The middle one needed Calms Forte 4 Kids from Hyland's Homeopathic as well. They all had fevers.

Most docs will say no... but with both my girls they diapers were very runny around teething and made their bums SO red! They would even get open sores! It is horrid.
They never threw up from it and never really got fevers... just sore bums.
I would say talk to your doc. This seems to be a long time to be that sick....

My girls never vomitted when they were teething but both did get diarrhea. The youngest one had it several times when she was teething.

I've heard the theory that too much drool gets swallowed, which can upset the stomach.

Yes, that is very typical symptoms for teething. You can give him tylenol to help ease the pain and fevers and teething tablets work great! I am for the natural non-numbing medicine, but baby orajel works too.

Yes. My daughter got diarrhea every time she was teething and it really burned her little butt. She threw up too. Not like a sick, flu type wretching, but she did throw up. I think it was all the drool both in her tummy and in the back of her throat that caused the gag reflex.

My friend's little boy had the worst most horrible rattling cough I've ever heard. It was frightening! The doctor said it was from teething. He didn't have a fever and didn't act sick and sure enough it went away between teething spells.

Some little ones breeze through teething and others have a harder time.
Just do your best to keep your son comforable and you'll both get through it.

Best wishes.

I have two children- their pediatrician firmly believes that 'teething' symptoms are a myth. He told me that when my oldest was very tiny, and I found it to be absolutely true. Neither one of my children had teething 'symptoms'. Excessive drooling can cause vomiting- but your child is not in pain from teething. It does not hurt them. Just like when you cut your wisdom teeth, do you remember that hurting? Mine did but only because they were impacted, lol. Most people feel NO pain when cutting teeth. Just my two cents! Good luck! Hope your baby gets to feeling better!

I might have him checked out if it gets worse, but when they are teething they make and swallow a lot of extra saliva which is acidic and upsets the tummy quite a bit. I've heard of it happening, but with the vomiting I would keep an eye on it. The extra acid could also be making him a little refluxy.

Sounds like teething. If the vomiting does not stop then I would call the pediatricians office. Keep him hydrated with the diarrhea and vomiting. Try some hylands teething tablets and some infant tylenol or motrin. The molars are no fun. Good luck
