Can I Wear My "Fraulein" Costume to My Kid's School Festival?

My family loves Halloween, and each year we have dressed together with a theme: monsters, superheroes, Star Wars. This year my boys wanted to be Power Rangers, so husband and I ended up getting our own costumes. He is the lederhosen-wearing, Bavarian style man. Mine is a "Flirty Fraulein", beer girl-style apron dress. As I am quite short, and small-busted, the dress goes nearly to my knees, and the top is not revealing. It has puffy, short, lace sleeves and I accompanied it with knee high socks and Mary Janes. We wore these to a craft brew festival last week and received tons of compliments. They are very fun!

So my first grader has a fall festival this weekend, and we are all encouraged to wear costumes. Can I wear this or do you think it's inappropriate? It doesn't advertise or necessarily equate to beer drinking. In fact, it's more of a german girl-type dress. What's your opinion? Can I wear it to the festival or shall I save it for our adult Halloween parties? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Sounds G-rated to me :)

ETA: Oh, St. Paulie girl or Maria from Sound of Music. It's all how you view the world, eh?

As long as the hem line is not too high and the neckline not too low (or busting out all over), it sounds like a fine costume.

As long as you don't look like the girl in the ad for the costume, you should be just fine!

It's fine...just identify yourselves as Hansel and Gretel.

I recommend carrying giant gingerbread men to emphasize the "Hansel & Gretel" theme. Additionally, the staff will appreciate the literary reference.

Otherwise, you will be considered a Beer Maiden by all adults present. :)

If you think it's appropriate then wear it. If you are unsure, just think about all the moms who will be referring to you as the St. Paulie Girl behind your back for the rest of your kid's school years.

Don't mean to sound snarky, just telling it as I see it. :)

Enjoy your Halloween.

The way you described it, it sounds fine.
Kids won't equate it to beer drinking.
You won't be carrying around a beer mug as a prop... so I don't see a problem with it.
As you said, it is a German-Girl type cultural dress.
No problem.

I say, from your description, that it is fine...you say you are not showing too much leg or too much cleavage, so go ahead and wear it.

Kids won't associate a Fraulein costume with beer. However, just make sure you're covered--from your description, I think you'll be okay.

I don't think it's a good idea. Kids may not associate the costume with anything, but parents will. Fraulein often comes with innuendo...ya' know?

As long as it isn't too short or revealing, I think it's fine. If anyone asks, you are a "german girl" or "Heidi" (from the children's story). Perhaps wearing tights or hose underneath would make you feel more comfortable? I would leave the beer stein at home though! LOL

from your title i was ready to say an emphatic No save it for the adults.

I'm a little more on the fence due to your description,

Utlimately I'm leaning towards the no don't dress up. And for a few reasons, first I have never seen a costume from those Halloween stores/catalogues that aren't meant to be super sexy, and if the name is flirty fraulein, i have to think it was meant to be short and low cut and give off a sexy vibe. So even if you are small busted and short in my mind the costume isn't going to fit you and you'll look silly, or it will fit well enough for you to look sexy despite your small boobs. The fact that you got compliments at the brew thing leans me towards it looks sexy.

Second reason i say no is that i think i only ever had one parent dress up when i was teaching preschool and in the 4 other preschools my own children attended the only ones to dress up were the teacher,
I do remember DH commenting one time that the teacher who was build like you described yourself was putting on a show in her crayon costume, I think it had a short skirt and she kept bending over. So think about what movements you would be doing whle at the festival.

So ultimately, save it for another occasion.

maybe not a concern in your area but i would be freezing my bazooma's off if it was outside and i was wearing that.

I would double check with the principal, but as long as it's to your knees, and not just your hips (:)) I don't see a problem with it.

Sounds fine. The kids won't get the beer drinking connection. And as someone else said (wisely) you can be the St. Pauli girl or Maria from the Sound of Music. It's a cultural costume that was added to the beer drinking, not the other way around.

Hello.

I have your costume. I got it since I personally thought it was cute and girly looking.

For me i wear running shorts underneath the dress since the fabric is thin. Beyond that I don't believe you should have to change the costume. As you said you wore it to an Oktoberfest event. You did so since it's a play off a German ladies dancing outfit. I think any costume can potentially be construed as adult oriented so unless you bring a Stein with you I think you're fine. I think the ladies idea of a Hansel and Gretel theme is a great one. I might try that another time myself.
No matter, be comfortable in what you wear. If you are you'll have more fun!

If you do what Sue recommends, I'd say it is appropriate. Otherwise, I wouldn't wear the costume.
