I work in a clothing store inside a dance studio and I make a lot of recital/performance/competition costumes for my employers.
They go to market in Dallas every fall but can't find fabric representatives there. Maybe the fabric stuff happens at a different market? I am not sure how that works. They go a specific weekend and buy things like hangers, display items, mannequins, necklace display shapes, and more stuff like that. They also almost always bring a bunch of items from the different companies wanting them to place orders.
My boss doesn't know how to find a wholesale fabric company to buy our fabrics from. She has limited computer skills and just has no ability to do this, I'd like to do this to save her some money. She buys almost all the fabrics that I use for the costumes from Hobby Lobby since it's right her close to the studio. She does go to Helen Enoxx Fabrics in OKC for the finer flashier fabrics but they are often $20 per yard or more.
I have seen some fabrics online while searching that are less expensive but she is leery of purchasing stuff from them since she doesn't know their reputation.
So, how do I go about finding a company that sells fabric wholesale.
My employers do have a federal tax ID documentation and a full business license, it's posted on the counter by the register.
They do buy direct from the costume companies because the costumes we order through them are at cost, she brings the parents cost up to the sale price in the company's catalogs, for instance. If she orders Mondor leos she might get them for $12 but the Mondor catalog sells them for $24.95. So she sells them at the same charge Mondor sells them for. Same for Soffe, GK, Under Armour, and more.
I am hoping you can tell me how to find fabric companies that sell directly to businesses so I can help my boss save some money. When I make a costume the parents are charged for the full fabric cost, the decor that goes on it, each supply/notion, I even buy the thread and divide that cost among the whole class I am making costumes for. Then my boss charges the parents a fee for me making that costume. I fit each girl/boy in the class individually and it can take days to make one costume.
So the charge for one of my costumes can run into a chunk of money but they can be worn a bunch of times instead of once or twice for a couple of performances then fall apart.
If you would please tell me how to google this, what phrase to use, or the names of some companies that sell wholesale to companies, I would appreciate the help. I have googled wholesale fabric suppliers, not many came up.
I am specifically in need of a knit that resembles denim for 12 costumes. I can find it online for $10 per yard but it's seconds. I know if I went out of town to a big city I could buy this sort of fabric in a fabric store for the same amount or even less but the travel cost would bring it higher and higher.
You want the Los Angeles Garment District. The streets are lined with different fabric stores. Some are wholesale and some are retail. They just ask for my tax ID when I go to check out and that is how they know what they will charge me.
She will just have to give them a try. We usually buy fabric when we are in LA and bring it back for the next costume. We are not that far. I would just call to ask for what you are looking for. Perhaps they will send you a sample, it might cost a few dollars, but you will know the quality. The stores selection is much larger in person then online.
Google: Los Angeles textiles, fabric, garment district.
Actually, pull up the map in Los Angeles, 9th and Maple. Enlarge it. You will see the names of all of them. You can google their names and get their numbers to call them. I know we went to Michael Levine and all the fabric was great and they had a great selection. I ask for 4-way stretch for my daughter's figure/dance material.
I will keep note that you make dresses. My daughter will probably only skate one more competition before she quits. She has a song in mind.

Probably not the answer your looking for, but since you would be purchasing a large quantity, ask to speak with the manager of retail store you usually use. They probably will offer you a large discount.
