Breastfeeing Mother Wants to Color Hair

I am still nursing our 10 month old daughter, and while I have highlighted my hair, I have yet to color it where the color touched the scalp. I would now like to color it all, and I bought an all natural product from Whole Foods, but I have yet to color it still. My doctor said it would be fine, I just wondered if there were any moms who had bleached/colored their hair while nursing?

What can I do next?

Yep! Did it while pregnant too. w/ all 3 kids-and not the healthy dye. I'd like to say my kids are all healthy and well, but, one of them had a brain tumor. And I had a miscarriage in between 1 and 2. I doubt it had anything to do w/ hair coloring. Very little of anything is absorbed through the skin into the blood stream. But, anything is possible.

I colored and highlighted my hair through both my pregnancies and throughout breastfeeding. My kids are just fine!

Find an Aveda salon through the web. Aveda uses organically based products that should not harm your daughter or you. There are many Aveda salons and there surely will be one near you.

My good friend who is a hair dresser, says that unless you plan on eating the hair color, you really have nothing to worry about. She has had 2 healthy pregnancies while working at a salon. You might want to turn on a fan or open a window while getting processed. I say go for it, and don't feel guilty. Good luck!

Products have evolved immensely! I colored my hair while preggers and after, and my OBGYN said it was okay. Just talk to your stylist and make sure they use the right kind of dyes without those yucky chemicals.

Oh, and I love the stuff from Whole Foods!!

My boys are 8 and 5. I nursed them both until they were both almost 2 and colored my hair the whole time. Right out of the box and not the natural type - just regular hair dye. No issues whatsoever. My nursing book that I referenced at the time did not list hair dye as a problem and when I asked my doctor about it she said "You're not going to drink it are you?" :-) (She is funny...that's why I like her) Anyway, it is not a problem. Go make yourself feel pretty again!!!

hey there!
i just colored my hair- DS is 8 mo. old and nursing exclusivly. No problems, and totally safe. I wouldn't recommend coloring hair during pregnancy- but highlights are ok and I had a semi weave done in month 5 of my pregnancy. Doctors for the most part will agree!

My hair guy says that the colors nowadays, especially the natural products, are perfectly fine for pregnant and nursing mothers (his opinion is that the hair product manufacturers aren't going to give up their sales to pregnant women, thus they make safer products so women can maintain their beautiful locks). I'm sure there is lots of people who say this isn't true. You might even consult a hair dresser or call a nursing mothers hotline and get their opinion.

Personally, I was not willing to risk a possible negative outcome for my baby, so I lived with a god-awful two-tone look for over a year until I was finally able to cut it all out and go natural. I don't love my natural color, and would like to color it again, but our little people are already exposed to so much toxicity from the environment, that I would hate for this one act to tip the scales in the wrong direction. That's just my 2 cents. You can look up the ingredients of the hair colorant you are considering on this website:

www.cosmeticsinfo.org

You might find that even the less toxic products are still fairly toxic. Anything that touches your skin can and will be partially absorbed -- that goes for make-up, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, sunscreen, etc. When you color your hair, you get a double-whammy, because you also inhale the product. Proceed with caution.

If you do go a ahead with it, don't fret, just enjoy the heck out of it. Look fabulous!

I've had my hair highlighted (low lights) I guess since before they were conceived. I really wouldn't worry about it. Both my girls are healthy, extremely smart and outgoing. Didn't seem to bother them at all. They are now 6 and 3. I didn't bleach my hair though. I am not one that wants BIG maintenance like that. Just something that is relatively low maintenance since I'm so busy with both girls. I wouldn't worry though.

I did it both while I was pregnant (the natural kind with no amonia) and nursing and that was the regular kind and my daughter is as beautiful and healthy as can be. I had the same doubts as you do but it was fine. I'll tell you I felt so much better about my self(confidence) after I did it. It's worth it.

I would find an aveda salon and use their hair color. I get semi-permanent hair glazes at my aveda salon (HUE in huntington beach) and I'm both pregnant and nursing LOL

Once my hair gets back to one color - I'm not going to dye it anymore until I'm done being pregnant and nursing. Not worth it to me.

p.s. to the people saying they got advice from their hair stylists - hair stylists are not doctors and know pretty much zilch about the effects of hair products on babies. No offense to you guys but the dye IS absorbed into your skin, does get into your blood stream, and into your breast milk. Drinking it is not the only way for you to get it into your system. Your hair stylist also works on commission.
