Does anybody have any ideas on how to cover grey roots in pregnancy. I'm too scared to use any color or dye on hair. But anybody ever tried , maybe hair mascara's or colored hair powder like Bumble and Bumble......is that safe?

Henna is safe, but it will add red highlights to you hair. There are also some plant based colorants at many of the health food stores.

I used regular dye and no issues times two. In fact my hairdresser has a kid and was fine the whole time.

The effect of my mental state for not grooming would be much worse.

They say it's safe...but I was still nervous about straight up hair dye. so this pregnancy I have used Clairol Brass Free non-ammonia hair dye. It's non-permanent so you have to recolor every 4-6 weeks...but most people have to do that anyhow.

hi, it is perfectly safe to dye your hair while pregnant. i had the same concerns when i was pregnant and wanted to cover up my greys i asked my doctor was it safe and she said yes that it's an old wives tale about not being able to dye your hair she said the only thing about doing it while pregnant is that the smell may make you sick if your still in the early stages. but its perfectly safe.

I used a more natural color called Naturacare. I get it at Whole Foods but have found it all around town. It doesn't off-gas any noxious fumes and is relatively gentle. For my own peace of mind, I just made sure the dye wasn't on my scalp as much as possible. I took the color almost to the end of my roots but not quite. I get complimented on that hair color all the time.

Good luck!

I worked in a salon for 6 years, I had my 2 children during that time, and colored my hair all the time. I, along with every educated hair stylist will let you there is nothing that will hurt the fetus!

You are right to be concerned about exposing your baby to ammonia-based hair colorants. There are several natural alternatives as some of the other moms have said. The best one I've heard of is called Naturcolor and is made in Italy. You can buy it at Whole Foods and perhaps online.

BTW, you might consider using this same colorant the rest of your life, too, not just during pregnancy. There is some concern in the alternative medicine community about whether commercial hair coloring agents increase the risk of ovarian cancer later in life.

Best of luck!

I have bright red hair. I mean BRIGHT. It's been this color for the past eight years or so. I bleach it and then dye it. During my pregnancy I colored my hair three times (so once a trimester). I was totally unwilling to be a fat brunette. With my body going through so many changes I couldn't deal with not having my 'natural' hair color. Vain maybe but it made me feel less crazy. Point? My kid is pretty damn smart and totally awesome. I don't think a little hair dye here and there is going to do any harm. But if you're doing it more often you can look into plant based dyes, your should be able to find them at any health store. I'm not sure what they'll do for covering gray since gray hair absorbs dye differently but it may make your non-gray hair look so totally awesome that no one notices the gray.

http://www.ehow.com/how_###-###-####_make-cover-up-grey-h... This is a tutorial how to make your own grey covering hair rinse. Looks interesting!

Even the Mayo clinic says you can dye your hair while pregnant, but if you're feeling it would be best not to -- there are some rinses you can make or buy that give you temporary grey coverage. You should check the ingredient list to make sure everything is safe during pregnancy. (Since the point of avoiding dye is because the skin absorbs some of it, any chemicals placed on skin have a chance to make it to the Moms blood stream.)

You can try and see if you have an Aveda salon in your area. They use all natural ingredients in all of their hair care products.
But I feel your pain. My gray hair drives me nuts and I color it myself every 3 weeks!

I use a brand called Naturtint. I get it at the health store. I don't think you can buy it online but the website is http://naturtint.com/index.htm

It has no ammonia and mostly natural botanicals. It covers better than any box color I have tried and I have actually had a hairdresser's jaw drop when she found out my hair came from a box. Because there is no ammonia the color doesn't look exactly like the picture. For instance, if you have dark hair and you are trying to match a blond color, pick out a blond that is much lighter. It gives you a little guidance on the box as to what it will look like on certain color hairs. It took me a couple of tried until I really found the color that I thought best suited me but once I did, it has been great.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Why are you too scared to use dye or hair color?! Its perfectly safe. I have dyed my hair through two healthy pregnancies and my hair dresser who is around the stuff all day has FOUR perfect kids. There is no reason to let yourself go because you are pregnant! :)

A.,
I am a hairstylist in San Pedro and had a baby 10 months ago. I stopped working 2 1/2 wks before I had my baby and colored my hair a few times during pregnancy. I asked my Dr. if it was an issue and she said there is no problem w/ coloring your hair during pregnancy.
As a stylist I can tell you that coloring your hair the first trimester and just after will give you some funky results. Not to sure why but the color does not come out the same.
