Hi everyone, I 'm about 12 weeks and I was wondering if it's really that bad to color your hair or not. Reason why I 'm asking because I highlighted it in Dec. not knowing that I was pregnant. Thanks
I colored and highlighted my hair while pregnant and my boys are just fine. Plus think about all the women who color hair for a living. The salon I went to, there was always a stylist pregnant so I ask them and all of them to date had healthy babies.
Don't worry you will be fine!
Congrats!

I believe that is a worry from the past! I've never been told not to color my hair while pregnant; although 15 yrs ago, I read it was a good idea to wait until I was past 12 weeks.
My last pregnancy I colored my hair all throughout and my baby was just fine. I wouldn't worry if I were you.

no, highlighting doesn't really saoak into the scalp. I've done it before too, and everything's fine

I remember hearing that it was bad years ago, but never saw any substantial proof that it is harmful to your baby. I can say, however, that I have a good friend who is a cosmetologist, and when she had her first, her daughter's hair ended up with brown ends with blonde roots! It was adorable. (I think, though, she had dark hair when she was born, and instead of it falling out or all changing to the blonde, it just stayed, and thus the difference).
I wouldn't fret over it! I see pregnant women at the salon all the time -- and the cosmetologists, too!

I didn't know I was pregnant for 5.5 months. I colored my hair, took prescription meds and had a couple of drinks during that time. He came out PERFECT.

Hello A.!
Being the daughter of a cosmetologist, I can reassure you that it's OK. You just shouldn't color your hair regularly during pregnancy and especially not when the fetus is more developed.

Hi A., my OB told me it is okay to do but to hold out until after first trimester. Since you had highlights done, no need to worry.

My doctor said as long as you are out of the first trimester it is more than fine. Only 5% of anything that is applied to your skin actually gets through and into the blood. But since you aren't suppose to actually get dye on your scalp that shouldn't be the concern. The real problem is the fumes he advised me so if I wanted to do it I could in a well ventilated area. That would be more than fine.
So if you did it in a well ventilated area things are more than fine. If you didn't I wouldn't worry too much. I've never seen an actual study that says it causes cancer, or deformaties in babies It can just effect their oxygen levels apparently. So more than likely you are ok. If you are still concerned tell your doctor on your next visit and I'm sure they will reassure you.
Congrats!

My doctor told me it absolutely doesn't impact the baby at all. Had colorings done in all my pregnancies. And I'm about to do it in my 3rd right now ;) I'm nine weeks

From what I understand - there is no concern for harm to the baby - the reason many people don't color their hair while pregnant is because your hormones are way out of whack and it could affect the ACTUAL COLOR of the highlights. Your little one will be just fine! :)

Two things, both good: highlights are the safest form of permanent haircolor, because it doesn't actually touch your scalp like single process permanent or semi-permanent haircolor; and second, if you highlighted your hair before you missed your period/were sure you were pregnant, the fetus might not yet have been implanted, which means it was not yet receiving nutrition OR chemicals from your body.
I wouldn't worry.

It's ok, but your hair goes through changes while your pregnant that can make coloring turn out a little weird. If you're going to do it again while preggo, just try to make sure you're in a pretty well ventilated room.

A.-- I asked the same question when I was pregnant & got great responses that it was okay. My MIL does my hair & I highlighted it twice when I was pregnant... turned out great & my baby is prefectly healthy! No complications or anything.

Re: highlights already done: have you seen the movie, Gumball Rally? When the guys in the sports car rip out the rear view mirror and throw it out of the car, yelling "what's behind us, don't matter!"
Re: going forward: your big belly is going to the best fashion accessory ever. Buy a baseball cap for when the roots come in, save some money and have a great pregnancy.
Cheers!

My ob told me NOT to color my hair when I was pregnant. I wouldn't worry about the highlights, but no more until after the baby is born and the breastfeeding has stopped.

I colored my hair a couple times during my pregnancy. Nothing happened to my kids I don't think. They are a little crazy. It could be due to the coloring lol - who knows.

I heard it's pretty bad. The chemicals that change your hair color, along w/ the other ones added in can absorb through your scalp. I'm sure you're fine though since it happened early on and it's only been once.
:) Congratulations!

A friend who is a nurse told me "we really don't know what is being developed every moment, so why would you risk it? Could your child have been a doctor if you didn't color your hair?" So I decided against it. Something to think about. Good luck with your pregnancy:)

I am an organic colorist. If you can find an organic colorist that would be great in your area. If not and you are just getting highlights then it is not bad because the color is not actually touching your scalp. Sometimes hormones can affect the color but I have never experienced that. Good luck, hope this is helpful :)

My stylist insisted it is safe and his wife colored all through her pregnancy. He told me it USED to not be safe because of the chemicals used in the product. He only uses an all natural coloring product so that might have something to do with it but I did get my hair colored every 8 weeks through my pregnancy and everything turned out fine.

Wow! What a wide range of answers! I was told by my doctor to stay away from it the first trimester because if I did miscarry then I'd probably link it to coloring my hair and feel really guilty about it. She said stay away from anything that I could question myself over later....if I did miscarry.
You can't go back in time, so stop beating yourself up. Now you can make a better decision based on what you learn from this post and your doctor.
Congrats and best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy. :)

My stylist said the only reason not to get your hair colored while pregnant is that it may not stick due to the different hormones in your body and hair. But she said it does no harm to the baby. It just may be a waste of money - MAY being the opperative word.
