Hi,

One of my favorite books is Effective Parenting in a Defective World. We moved, and I have been thinking abt looking for it to read. :) It is by Chip Ingram. This book puts things in to persepctive in a great way! We have a library of 100's of books designed to help with parenting, marriage, and all types of relationships. What I can say is this, putting what the books suggest into practice takes discipline by everyone. However, as the matriarch you putting it into practice can go a long way.

Blessings,

Katherine

Love and Logic. I am reading "Parenting teens with Love and Logic" and it is wonderful. I read the earlier publications which deal with younger children. Try it. K.

I have taken Positive Discipline classes and got the book- Positive Discipline from a-z. It is a great book for all ages. It is easy to look up certain issues and it gives you a few examples of what to try with each issue. It also tells you a little about why the behavior is happing....I really like it and am sure to use it though out the years.

Parenting With Love And Logic- Teaching Children Responsibility by Foster Cline, M.D. and Jim Fay

I LOVE this book and it's easy to put into practice suggestions! I have read it over and over and find that every time I remember to parent this way, the stress level in my home goes way down and peace reigns.

I am now reading the one on teenagers by the same authors. Wonderful! You won't regret getting your hands on these books!

Best wishes,
L.

I would have to say, anything by Dr. James Dobson is great. And I have found that the lessons Dr. Dobson shares work across the gender and age lines. Also, Dr. Dobson is a strong Christian so his advice is biblical as well. Another good resource is Focus On The Family. Hope this helps you.

Parenting with Love and Logic by Roger Cline and Jim Fay is great! If you have little ones under the age of 5, Love and Logic Magic by Jim Fay and Charles Fay is also wondeful. It really is like magic. There are other parenting with logic style books by Roger Cline and Jim Fay for children at various other ages. I'm sure you can find them at your local library, but they are relatively inexpensive on Amazon.com also. If you kids are a variety of ages, I'd start with Parenting with Love and Logic, and then move on to the other ones that are more age specific. They give very simple, yet very effective parenting techniques. Good luck! These books changed my life.

Hi Stefanie-

I have heard that Brining Up Boys by Dr. Dobson is a great one. I actually have it and was planning to start reading it this week. I have 3 boys, and I so understand what you mean- it can be just plan crazy around here at times- my hubby comes home and all I want to do is run and hide in my studio. BTW- I would love to see the stuff that you make. I love to sew- I make baby and kids clothes and sell them on my online shop http://www.mamamonkey.com and http://www.mamamonkey.etsy.com

Stefanie,

I would also recommend the book Effective Parenting in a Deffective world by Chip Ingram, we only have 1 little boy that is very strong willed and we loved this book! My husband also read Bringing up Boys by Dr. James Dobson which focuses only on the struggles of raising boys. Both of these were really good reads and we will be keeping them on our shelves to reference time and time again. I have heard from a friend of mine that the love and logic books are good and there are some places that actually have love and logic parenting classes, maybe you could do a search for it in your area, I know of some contact info for the Spokane, WA area if that is where you are located at. Hope this helps.

First I wanted address your household's disorder. I don't know if you've ever heard of flylady.net, but I've been doing her program for about a month now and cannot believe how much it's helped destress me. Just a suggestion.

As for the books, I've read a few and the ones that made the most impact on me is "The Five Love Languages for Children" by Gary Chapman, and "Shepherding A Child's Heart" by Tedd Tripp.

Good luck, and I hope you find what you're looking for.

Stephanie,
Great suggestions here but I would add: be sure that you and hubby are on the same page and not playing good cop/bad cop. Kids know this so you have to present a united front. Be firm, consistent and don't give up. Oh. And A.S. Neil "Summerhill" is fabulous. And I am told that "Positive Discipline" will be a lifesaver.

Good Morning Stefanie G!

I just ordered a book from www.homeword.com called "Taming your family zoo" and it's great! Homeword.com also has lots of free newletter type articles regarding all sorts of parenting issues and they are quick reads ....since it doesn't sound like you have much spare time on your hands!

Kudos to you for raising 4 boys!

I recommend "Positive Discipline" by Jane Nelsen, Ed.D. There are other Positive Discipline books as well, which are more specific to age groups, etc. one of them is mentioned by Aspen below. A few others are, "Positive Discipline for Teenagers", "Positive Discipline for Preschoolers" and "Positive Discipline: The First 3 Years"

These books focus on not only getting your kids to behave themselves but how to develop a healthy self esteem, use mistakes as a learning opportunity, involving your children in the problem solving process and teaching them to be responsible.

It takes an approach which is kind yet firm and explains why we don't have to "punish" to teach our kids. The best part is that it teaches our kids how to behave when we aren't watching them and how to make positive decisions when you can't always be there.

It's a great reference and the one book I have found to be useful and follow my parenting philosphies of being a friend and confidant for my children in addition to being a positive role model providing strong guidance.

Good luck!

I got my kids some Help Me be Good books. I cant remember where I got them from, but they help with manners, being rude, repsecting people, sharing and other subjects. You can probably google the series because I got mine through one of those on line promotions, but I cant remember where.

THe libary has alot of books on behavior. I have a 4 yr old how is a strong-willed child. THere is one book that compares a child to a horse. The book is called Taming your stong-willed child. It helps you to ask the Why and get to the root of the problem. Another book is child behavior it helps you to see what kind of behavior your child has. Good luck on finding the behavior problems you are having with your kids.
