I second Love and Logic. Kevin Leeman also has a great one called "A new kid by Friday".. :)

Oh, and "The Strong willed Child" by Dobson is a classic.

I Love the "Positive Discipline" series by Jane Nelson. There's one called "The First Three Years" and one for the preschool years. I'd recommend both. She encourages a positive approach to kids, using logical consequences and techniques that reduce power struggles. It actually takes less energy to do what she suggests. I've gotten good results with my own "independent" :-) little guy.

Good luck!

Hello, There is a real cute series of books called "Little Miss" and "Little Mr." We have used these for my own children (they are grown now) and grandchildren as well as daycare children. They are books like "Little Miss Naughty", etc. They are cute, funny and get the point across.
A good parenting book (I don't know if it is still out there) is Dodson's "How to Parent". It describes each stage of development up to around 6 or 7 years old.
Good luck with your precious family.

As soon as I hear "strong-willed" I think first-born, and I see I was right. Please remember, it's all about temperament. You can never truly go against temperament - it must be understood and worked with - with patience and guidance and not strict discipline. Strong-willed toddlers and esp. children need to have control over things, so remember to always give her a choice - it can be YOUR choice really, by giving her say two things YOU decide on beforehand, that SHE can "choose" between. I would highly recommend a book on birth (try "The Birth Order Book" I think it's called, by "Lehman"). It's utterly essential to understand the psyche of this personality.
Hope this helps - it certainly helped me for my 1st-born's childhood.

"Setting Limits with your Strong Willed Child" by Robert J MacKenzie. I stumbled across it while buying 1-2-3 Magic and How to Talk So Kids Will Listen. All are great books; however, for a strong willed child the latter 2 do not work as well. It's very practical and easy to follow. I've been recommending it to everyone with a strong willed child. This was an amazing book and has literally changed our lives. Good luck!

Just part way through a great book called "1-2-3 Magic" by Thomas Phelan, Ph.D. It is "effective discipline for children 2-12". A family member's therapist recommended it to her for her daughter and it has tons and tons of great reviews on Amazon. I am starting to use it, along with some of Super Nanny's techniques, and the counting works well! My two-year-old even stops misbehaving when I reach number 2! They also have a video out, so check your library. Good luck and let me know how you like it!

Mother of a 5.5 year-old boy and 22-month-old boy. Married to a great a helpful man. :D

E., I LOVE the book How To Talk So Kids Will Listen, & How To Listen So Kids Will Talk. I used it in my guidance and discipline class & have shared it with all my familes (I have an at-home preschool). It gives you easy suggestions to try in a variety of situations. It reminds you to take a look at your behavior during challenging situations, and gives you parent stories at the end of each chapter. It is a quick read and I have had a great deal of success using this resource. Peace to you! B.

One of the best series on relationships and child rearing that I have ever seen or read are those from Henry Cloud & John Townsend. They also do a series every Monday night at Mariner's church in Newport beach called Monday Night Solutions.

Their website is http://www.cloudtownsend.com/ and they are fantastic. They even have question and answer sessions at the end of every talk on Mondays.

Try Parenting with Love and Logic by Foster Cline and Jim Fay. I have been using it with my strong-willed 3-year-old and am impressed with the results. The tantrums have almost vanished, and my daughter is happier. I like the book because it tells you exactly what to do and say instead of general concepts. Its easy to implement too.
