We found out yesterday we are having a boy and can't agree on a first name. The middle name will be Everett after husband's grandpa MN. Our daughter's name is Albany, so I like original names. The names I like for a boy (prefer a "T" or "A" name) are Tannon (favorite), Turner and Toren. My husband likes Chase, which is way too popular for me. I also like Porter, but think it might be popular?. Thoughts...suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great recommendations - I will let you know once we decide. Tanner was the original name I liked, but it is too popular, which is why I love Tannon, but husband isn't too happy with it. We're really looking for an original name - so Aiden, Adam, etc. are out. We have 3 Aiden's on our street alone. Haven't heard of Jace or Kasen...both very unique. My grandma's maiden name was Auxter, which is a different "A" name, but I think it is too out there. Oh why can't this be easy.

What about Tanner or Tucker? As far as "A" names goes....I don't think there's a better one than ADAM. There's also Aaron or Ayden. You don't HAVE to be trendy. Sometimes, that's best.

Love the name Tannon and Toren...but my husband and I always said if we had a boy we would name him Titus. It is a good biblical name and defitiely unique.

Hi, you should check the Social Security baby name website:

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

It gives you the ranking and number of children born each year with any given name. For example: Chase was the 67th most popular name for boys in the US last year. Porter was the 481st most popular name for boys. Turner was the 973rd most popular name for boys. Neither Tannon or Toren appear in the 1000 most popular boys names in the last ten years. You can also check by state since naming trends vary in different regions.

Another good resource is the Baby Name Wizard:

http://www.babynamewizard.com/

The site will suggest names you might like based on your daughter's name or based on other names you already like. I'd also take some time to read through her articles on baby naming trends before you choose.

My personal advice -- names that seem "unique" or "original" now may not turn out to be as clever as you might think. Tannon or Toren are part of a larger naming trend of names that end in the "n" sound, (according to the author of the Baby Name Wizard site, almost a 1/3 of boys born in the last few years have names ending in the "n" sound: http://www.babynamewizard.com/archives/2007/7/where-all-b.... The name might be unique, but your son will also be among many boys with rhyming names: Aiden, Jayden, Ethan, and Gavin. Chase, Turner, and Porter all fall into the category of last names turned first names, which is something the upper crust are fond of doing (though these usually correspond to family names and aren't just plucked out of thin air). Also keep in mind that Little Tannon or Toren will constantly be repeating his name and spelling it for everyone since the name is so "original." However, the other three name are a little more recognizable (like Albany is) and might be easier for new acquaintances to pick up.

Hope those two sites help! Good luck!

If I could have had another boy, I would have named him Jace. (If you use a J name then his initials will be JET - cool nickname if he becomes an athlete!)

It's funny - you think you're finding a name that isn't popular, but then as soon as you name your child that, boom! so is everyone else! :)

I named my son Cade Emerson, (Emerson is dad's grandpa's middle name) because I've loved the name Cade since I was 14. And I'd never heard of anyone else (outside of books) with that name. So I felt it was a good choice. Since I named him that, I have met several other Cades! :) Although it does make me feel better that they are all a few years younger, and Cade is still the only one in his whole school with that name. But, you know, even if there were a bunch of them running around, I still love the name, and it suits him, so I think I would still be happy with it.

Name choice is such a personal thing. I hope you and your husband find an awesome name you both love. And don't let anyone else influence you regarding the names you already love. My husband's family hated the name Cade and they hated my daughter's name (Jorie) but we ignored their opinions, because, well, it really wasn't any of their business. I mean, I didn't have a say in their stupid names, right?! :)

Congratulations on your new little one!
J.

How about Landon? Popular enough that your husband may have heard of it and unique enough to satisfy you. I get what you are saying - there were 8, count 'em EIGHT other girls named A. after me the day I was born.

Tannon is cool! Albany is beautiful also. I would suggest taking into account your last name, and how the first sounds with the last. We also had a terrible time naming our third child, also a boy. I wanted Julian but it got vetoed by my husband, so he is Luke Vincent :)
Good luck!

ivillage.com has message boards that are all about baby names and you can post polls for people to vote. I went to my local hospitals website and it had the names of all the babies born there (in last couple weeks). I found it by accident, but thought it was a good way to see what people were naming their babies. I don't think Porter would be too popular at all and like Tannon. Toren might be shortened to Tori (which is more of a girl's name) I also like the maiden name idea if you have a cool one. We went with Holden and Cooper for our sons' middle names because they were our mothers' maiden names. Good luck!!

How about Avery, Austin, or Tucker? Remember to look at the initials he might end up with too. Hope that helps! It's always fun/challenging to come up with a name that sounds good! Good luck and congratulations!

As soon as I saw that you needed a boy's name, I was going to suggest Torin and see that you have Toren already on your list.

I disagree with the previous person who said that Toren would probably get shortened to Tori. I have a 4 year old grandnephew named Torin and nobody in my family has shortened it to Tori. The only time he gets called something other than Torin is when he and my 6 year old dd Taryn are together then everyone gets the names confused since they are so close.

I like the trend of bringing back the good old fashioned names that people aren't using anymore. Perry is a favorite of mine (of course, there's a bias there ~ it was my dad's name, and today is the 26th anniversary of the day he died). It's a good, strong name that means Pear Tree (fruitful and strong), or dwells by the pear tree. Plus, his initials would be PET, which would be terrific for a veterinarian or a physician (think PET Scan). ;-) Have fun deciding, and enjoy your baby boy!

As for Zander, it's a derivative of Alexander (or Aleksander), and I have three friends whose sons or grandsons are named Zander! It's become a very popular name recently! LOL.

EDIT: I just checked the name Perry at babynamewizard.com and found this link to how people react to the name Perry:

http://www.babynamewizard.com/namipedia/boy/perry?results...

Not bad at all! They say it sounds: Smart, sexy, friendly, creative, strong, young, and sophisticated! What more could a boy want in a name? LOL Plus, they say it's not in the top 100 names in any state in the U.S., so it's rare.

We found our son's name (Kasen) at http://www.babynamewizard.com/namipedia/advanced-name-finder.

It's a unique site because it has tons of search fields where you can include or NOT include certain things (like it "must start or end with," or it "can't start or end with"), choose popularity, length, style, etc. Very cool.

It was handy because one of my favorite names was Carter but our last name is Barta so those don't go together well at all. With that site, I was able to exclude any name with "ar" in it.

I love the name Turner!!! I have a little bias though- my son and my Fathers middle name is Turner, so it is a family name. I don't know anyone else who has used the name, so it isn't a trendy name, but very cute. We gave serious thought to using it as a first name. Good luck and congrats!
